Not entirely related to the topic, but there's something I'd like to bring up that I'm personally unable to lab by myself. I was playing Pichu in some friendlies earlier today, and went for a nair at jablock percents, as usual, and going for a close-up down-smash as it covers both missed tech and teching in place, but I noticed that my down-smash actually caught the opponent when they tech-rolled away. This got me wondering if it's possible to use down-smash to cover all options in a teching scenario, which would be an amazing way to get kill confirms off of moves like nair. I know it covered teching away, and is also capable of covering missed techs or teching in place, so the question is whether it would also have covered teching in at that spacing. However, I'm just one man, and I'm too lazy to try labbing that out in its entirety. In case it's character specific, I should mention I was playing against a Greninja.

I like to do a full hop retreating TJolt in this situation. It covers standing up and getup attack with aerial TJolt. You can sometimes even followup on the TJolt. Roll-in is a free DTilt, NAir or grab. Roll away is the only thing that gets lightly covered by grounded TJolt. What are your thoughts on this? I think it is pretty good especially at ledge when they can't effectively roll away.

Oh wow, this actually sounds super good. I always struggled getting a followup from the trips, generally running in with a grab or something and whiffing if they buffer an option quick enough. I think I'm gonna try it, thanks!

hm I can definitely see it being a solid option on taller characters, though it would unfortunately not work underneath most platforms

In my case I've been playing around with options. This video answered a bunch of questions for me. I found tjolt and dtilt the best in my experience, but always wondered if there's a better option to cover everything. First thing I tried were immediate dash grab and when that didnt work then dash dance grab, of which mileage varies. Like Landon mentioned, platforms can mess up a full jump tjolt but in most cases I've been banning battlefield and yoshi's island. Still it's something to keep in mind.

I just want to add, since I'm not sure it's commonly known: If you want to pivot roll cancel grab consistently, you can do both the reversal and attack inputs with one cstick input in the opposite direction of your initial dash.

Most people in my experience have just done getup attack or neutral, so I've just been doing an immediate short hop dair after the trip. I go for the fastfall version to get the spike and landing hiboxes, and jab lock when most people miss the tech because it's such an uncommon situation for most people and the angle is really low. The whole sequence is definitely less likely to work on really high level players but I've gotten a lot out of it.

First question: Generally how active are the hitboxes of getup attacks? More than 3 frames? if so, fuck me. if not, Second question: Is it possible to catch some characters' neutral getup, getup attack, and roll in with down smash after the downtilt whiff? It's unlikely but if their getup attack's forward active frames match up with the invincibility frames of down smash and their roll in gets caught by down smash, you can get an option select at ledge or on platforms for low% edgeguard/gimp/ledgetrap setups. Roll away is stopped by the ledge, and the rest of the getup options are covered by down smash already. Granted, the down smash won't give nearly as much of a reward as what you could get off of this tech chase, but it would be guarenteed and (hopefully) easy. I'm going to say that this probably won't be a real thing, but it might be. Also, I'm tired and I've forgotten if you can buffer non charged smash attacks. If you can't, that could be a problem.

After a f-tilt trip I like to read get up attacks with landing down air. if you get the second hit it launches them at a low angle for just a second, so they usually miss the tech. then you can go for a jab lock into whatever you want. I know its kinda situational, but the style points go through the roof

I like to do the same thing! More precisely, I’ll do: Landing nair-> f-tilt -> dair-> jab once to lock -> neutral b for second lock -> f-tilt (at this point they’re at enough percent for f-tilt to force a tech) -> jab once -> neutral B -> d-tilt stuff. Also @do the skater thing literally what planet are you living on right now? Pichu is hella stylish.

How did you do the buffered short hop upair with c-stick? Every time I do, the c-stick input turns out to be too late and I miss the upair

If you're not already using a shoulder button to jump, it's pretty much required. Just hold the jump button and c-up. In the case of lightning loops for example, as soon as you input the fast fall you should start holding both your jump button and c-up and don't let go until the move comes out.

I recommend you try it without the c-stick, and just press the jump and attack buttons while holding up. Much easier to buffer.

dash (must be forward) shield attack or grab in that order, very quickly
