Every year when spring comes, everyone here will go to pick wild herbs with their friends. It’s a big event for Yunnan people as important as picking mushrooms. There are many wild herbs that we don’t even know their names in Yunnan. We love them as much as we love any meat. No high-end vegetables can be substituted for these wild herbs in our hearts. Every spring, they’ll become an inexhaustible resource of ingredients. It's never a real spring without a wild herb feast, and it also marks the beginning of a new spring every year.

This is why i love learning about foraging. Finding plants growing wild that you can add to your food or can be made into medicine. Or dye. That reminds me i need to harvest the wild sunflowers soon since the whole plant helps make a yellow dye and the plants are starting to die due to the summer heat. Also need to havest what i can of the hairy plantain leaves since ive put that off so much they've gone to seed and started to die. Im excited to try making the salve that helps with insect bites and plant stings.

I recognise a lot of the wild herbs and leaves in the video. I am from one of the hilly regions of north-east India and this is how we do it too. With our knitted baskets and foraging in the forests. Our style of cooking is more subdued though. But none the less, it's the gift of the natural world that makes us happy and healthy people. ❤️

@@Jumpoable we usually eat some of them raw, mixed with a paste of chillies, garlic, fermented fish and salt. Some we steam or a quick dip in boiling water and mixed in the chilli paste. Some are cooked with meat too.

Life in the countryside is beautiful, more simple, peaceful, closer to nature, to earth and despite the hardships it's worth it. I am from Romania and I live in the south part of the countryside. My parents and I are farmers. I'd love to come to Yunnan one day and enjoy the food that you cook . You made me miss my godfather who used to cook the Chinese food for me to eat .Now he' s passed away but living in my heart for ever .Chinese food is awesome and delicious.

As Yunnan is close to Vietnam, this style of cooking is more close to Vietnamese cuisine, utilising a lot of fresh, raw herbs. the Cantonese won't eat raw vegetables or herbs! LOL.
