This reminds me of growing up in Gordon Alabama...about 20 miles south of Dothan Alabama in the 70s. Me & my parents would drive to a friend of my dad's that lived in Ashford Alabama...he had a small garden, & we would pick these garden fresh peas, along with squash, tomatoes, okra & other fresh vegetables. We would go back to the house & sit on the front porch & hull these peas & my dad would play his favorite Tom T Hall country music 8-track tape while we pulled these peas & talked as a family!!! Thank you Tammy for stirring up some WONDERFUL & FORGOTTEN MEMORIES!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.

When I was a kid, my daddy would call all us 4 y oungins in to help shell purple hulled peas. He loved them and we loved helping our daddy. He could out shell us 3 to 1, but we tried hard to keep up with him. Mamma would serve them in her McCoy pottery bowl. I still have that bowl and dispplay it. Thank for sharing and bringing back happy memories.

I have put up two bushels of purple hull peas and one bushel of pinto beans. I have always cooked them in different kinds of meat, but I will cook some this week and use the beef broth. Lord Tammy and Chris! I have shelled many a Purple-Hull pea with my precious late Mother. Purple Hulls were her favorite. We called it shelling a "mess" of peas. You have to look for little worms too. My Mother would cook Purple Hull peas, fried field corn, fried okra, fresh sliced garden tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, green onions, banana pepper, cornbread, and iced sweet tea with some cut lemon on the table. What I would give to eat her good cooking again! God Bless you both for being old-timey from my generation like me. :-)

Girl, have you not shelled lots of purplehull peas? We raise them every year and I'd be shelling all day the way you're doing it. Open very top of pea and slide your thumb all the way down, making quick work of it. When you have 5 gallon buckets full to shell, got to get them done! We usually put abt 20-30 quart bags in freezer every year. Sure are good in the winter. Love your show!
@CollardValleyCooks
@CollardValleyCooks 4 жыл бұрын
If I had a 5 gallon bucket I would have a big bowl full of pea pods and I would be doing what you explained. I only had a gallon bag 3/4 full. You know I grew up on family farm of about 200 acres. I know how to work, how to milk, how to do a lot. I do not take pleasure in telling others they are doing something wrong 😕 I am not sure what people are thinking 🤔 when they think they know how to do things so much better than someone else. Why is that?

Tammy, there was no intent of telling you that you were shelling peas wrong. Everyone does things their own way. I was merely stating how I did them when I had so many to do. I have, though, recently discovered automated pea shelters and they are wonderful and so fast. Enjoy your show so much. We have very similar cooking styles, but I have learned a lot from you! Again, I'm sorry if I offended you. Oh, and I just made your peanutbutter pie. Taste great! 👍😊

The black eye pea seems more drier than a pink eye purple hull pea and has a more earthy taste. Field peas are smaller than the other two and has a more savory taste. Pink eye purple hull peas (my personal favorite) has a more green or fresher taste than the other two. That’s MY opinion, hope it helps❣️🥰

Quick question! I have that exact same stove. Do you ever accidentally rub up against the knobs, just enough to where the igniters don’t spark, but just enough to leak gas?

Our these like the beans that when they get more dry you put them in a potato bag and hit them with a stick and it shakes the beans out and it Easter to separate when u empty the bag and u clean them in water then boil them .

Where to buy purple hull peas?

Hey, I have been wanting to cook my good friend a dish that she remembers from her childhood, peas n cornbread. But, I have not been able to find purple hulls or pink eyes online to buy. Bushs makes them canned but everywhere is sold out. Would you happen to know a company that might ship them to me, canned or dried? I am desperate to make these for her as she is a special friend!

I’m gettung 2 bushels of purple hull peas, 1 bushel of zipper peas and 1 bushel of butter beans tomorrow already shelled. Just curious how you blanch and freeze peas for the freezer. I like to hear different methods. Your fresh peas look so good. I know they were delicious too.

The closest I've ever had to purple hull peas are black eyed peas which I think they're in the same family of peas.

Aren't these black (purple) eyed peas? We call them choaree in Gujarat India and cook them with potatoes and brinjals (Indian variety of eggplants).

Tammy how did y’all end up in Saint Mary’s? Do you feel like you were led by the Lord to go there? Do you still own your house in the mountains of Georgia? Because here’s why I’m asking. I know people that the Lord is leading or I thought down that way. I definitely felt like I was supposed to go to Florida? But I can’t go there for anything. Now some people on KZbin are talking about there being problems and needing to get out of Florida? Well here is a funny thing. With my not ever being able to go to Florida. I mean really I’d have to sit down and tell you all the things that of happened that are crazy. Plus I never had anywhere to go until now. And now I have a place to get out of here the bottom of South Carolina. That’s a whole beautiful story of the Lord you would not believe. So it’s weird like maybe were supposed to go to Florida later? But those whom He loves is giving an escape route to get out of this area for now?
