I have to say that even after watching hundreds and hundreds of videos of guitars and hearing plenty in real life, this is by far the most beautiful sounding guitar i have ever heard. It really blows my mind the craftsmanship and heart that must've went into making this guitar.

Wow, what a fabulous guitar. If I had the money I'd buy it right now, but I'm just a poor guy so I'll just look and listen and admire. That's the guitar Kenny Burrell is playing on the cover of his 1967 reissue of his famous 1957 album with John Coltrane.
Very nice playing. Lovely style. Great touch & tone

It's intriguing to hear a vintage instrument played in real time - it's a sort of time capsule knowing that the same woods, etc. that made those sounds decades ago remain yet alive and prepared to deliver the very same sounds today. Timeless.

The D'angelo has its own woody reverb and doesn't need any help from the amp's artificial reverb. It only covers up the guitar's natural sonic beauty.

The celluloid pickguard and binding was purchased in sheets, about 24" x 54" and if it was made by a company that cut corners by using tap water and low quality (cheap) alcohol, the material degrades and breaks down, eventually turning to dust. It is believed that D'Angelico and Gretsch obtained the celluloid that they were using from the same source. It makes me sad when a customer brings me a beautiful, all original guitar that suffers from binding rot. It is a very time consuming job and people don't realize how much it can cost to repair.

The inlay on fret #3 is backwards. I can't recall ever seeing that on any guitar anywhere.
@joepalooka21455 жыл бұрын
Hey great observation, I didn't notice that! I was just comparing it to the one Kenny Burrell is playing on the cover of his album with John Coltrane, and Burrell's fret #3 is normal. ????
@pneumatic005 жыл бұрын
@@joepalooka2145 You never know what will catch your eye! As I said, I've never seen that anywhere. I've been a fan of fat jazz guitars for many years and I owned a '69 L5 for a while...now I have a'54 Guild X-150 & a '56 Guild X-175 (plywood guitars) I need the long 25.5" scale with my fat fingers and only the earliest Guilds to mid-1956 have that, outside of Artist Awards) If you go look at Stromberg master 400's some inlays are arrow up alternating with arrow down, but not all Stroms have that style inlay. And you sure do not see many of those. But I've never seen a Gibson Super 400 with a flipped inlay, and the double parallelograms like on an L-7 or ES-175 would not look good flipped in my opinion.

John D had some kind of an association with Manny's on 48th street in Manhattan. In 1963-64 they had one in their window next to a Gretsch White Falcon. The Falcon was $600 and the D'Angelico was $3000. I remember it well because me and my friends were wondering what the heck made it so expensive ( we had no clue who he was) Once Jimmy Hendrix said to John D, "when are you going to make me a guitar"! And D'Angelico answered "When you learn how to play". A reference no doubt to Hendrix handling his guitars pretty ruffly and John was particular who he made his guitars for. Now they're worth a ton of money. Two custom made guitars called "The Teardrop" are worth over 1 million each.
@johnanderson37614 жыл бұрын
I thought he only made one teardrop for a las vegas showman.
@cjc47654 жыл бұрын
john anderson no. He made 2 and the guy that owns the one that your referring to offered a million dollars for the other. The problem is that no one knows where the other one is. I think D’Aquisto mentioned that he made 2 of them or maybe it’s in John Ds record/log book. I remember reading it years ago.

Always love all your demos. This one is no exception, but I would have liked to hear less reverb though. Reverb tends to lend an "acoustic like" air to electric guitars, so on this demo it's just confusing how acoustic vs electric the tone of the guitar is. :)
@billhatcher93032 жыл бұрын
Fine player, but not a good representation of what the sound of a guitar like this really sounds like. The pickguard is not Bakelite. It’s celluloid. Also, I have lived in atlanta for 50 years. I never heard of this guy who owned this guitar. I saw several d’angelico New Yorkers here, but missed this one.

Whish I could hear the acoustic sound of it, since it’s originally an acoustic archtop. D’Angelico’s invention was the mastery of the beautifuly balanced acoustic sound. This set up with the Fender amp is just not showing what that instrument capable of in good hands, like Pasquale Grasso or Peter Berstein…

UGH! Emerald City! Walked in with cash in my pocket. They had an old L5 in-store and traveled to Seattle with the intent of buying that guitar. Some effete rodents in the store let me know I was interrupting their day. ("Well great. Everything was going just fine. No customers to disturb us and then this guy walks in and wants to drop a load of cash on a guitar. The nerve!") I apologized for being so rude as to think I could possibly buy a guitar in a guitar store. Since then I have been on the west coast several times, and have walked past Emerald City. Didn't even go inside. Won't ever go back. Enjoy your snobbishness you musty rodents!
