I never thought of this as a learned skill before. My tennis coach never taught me this. I just naturally did both of these things when I played, I thought I was just being lazy, but I can see now how it's easily overlooked and actually saves time from picking them up by hand.

Super easy to do if you use a forehand/pancake grip so that your racquet face is parallel to the ground. Then hit the ball on your strings near the top of the racket (not the center/sweetspot) and it will easily bounce up off the court 🙂

I usually use the 2nd method unless there are several balls close to each other, then I tap them with my racquet to gather them next to each other and bend down and put them on the racquet face, then in my pocket.

Just pick up the ball like you would with a badminton shuttle. It's one motion to scoop it up onto the racket. No need to use a foot or bend down to bounce the ball several times.

Method two is most versatile, can do it leaning over the net, or to pass balls to others... as someone who has played for 40+ years once you are good at it there is no way you would do anything else (though the hockey flick is also good for passing the ball to others but you need strong wrists)...

My take is that the first one is very easy for people in relatively good shape and the other two immediately let people know you're part of the tennis tribe. That said, I prefer to rainbow flick my tennis balls over my shoulder and catch them for the intimidation factor. Unfortunately, that intimidation only lasts until they realize I am far better at football than tennis (aka my first service game).
