Ah... About Claudia... I read Interview with a vampire 20 years ago, but at the time, I mainly took the character to represent an horrific side of vampirism and its consequences (I was 15). I learnt only 2 or 3 years ago that Anne Rice had a daughter, that she lost to leukemia, when she was 5... The book was published a few years after her death. Since then, I wonder how much writing the character of Claudia might have helped in Rice's grieving process (making your (dying) child immortal, looking for the woman she will never be able to become, finally letting her go,...). I don't know how much that might explain how the character is talked about. 🤷

But why describe her as sensual 😭
@zachzackzakАй бұрын
@@BookswithEmilyFox I haven't read the book so idk, but sensual isn't inherently sexual; it means gratifying to the senses, like beautiful or graceful. She definitely could've gone with another word though

Also, while I absolutely love your content and I appreciate how thorough you are in showing these tropes in what you read, I just wish you could give some grace to those of us who neither had many choices of what to read nor were ever encouraged to think badly about the tropes. The world of literature has gone through several really important and complete paradigm shifts since some of these books were written, and some of us living before the shifts couldn’t even imagine how much better things could get. I’m thankful that you know better than to put up with sexualization tropes. When I was your age I didn’t.

It's okay when you don't have 'good' months with this challenge - every book you don't like and decide to unhaul is a success, because your library is becoming that much more curated to your personal tastes! It might not be the most fun to get to a point where you realise you're just not liking a book, and it might be less satisfying to get one you end up enjoying, but it's still a big win imo. The idea of a large curated library is just drool-worthy 💯

Not sure if you've ever seen the movie Stand by Me from the 80's with Corey Feldman, Will Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell and Keifer Sutherland but it's based on The Body from this collection. It and Shawkshank are definitely the two best stories from this collection and even if you don't read the last one I definitely recommend it. I'm sure if you just want a copy of Shawkshank to keep without the rest of the stories I'm pretty sure they published it on its own when the movie first came out, it'll likely have the movie tie-in cover but it is an option.

I love all the decor and cats :) Guess what? Different seasons was actually assigned reading for us in 10th grade. Although they split the class and assigned each group an individual story from the collection. I got the last one (The Breathing Method) and remember being jealous because I wanted Shawshank Redemption. Read the entire book though. I always remembered the collection as having three stories not four and I think it’s because our teacher only assigned three of the stories instead of all four. Seeing your reaction and looking back, yeah that’s understandable lol. I will say the rest of the stories are no where near as gross/disrespectful, and I remember them being fairly tame especially in comparison. Also I am in the same boat as you as somehow having been able to avoid spoilers for Interview With a Vampire my entire life (and also not knowing it was about an actual interview lol). The most I’ve somehow absorbed through cultural osmosis is about how much Anne Rice despised fan fiction.

Interview is one of Anne Rica's tamest books when it comes to themes. I like her writing but I totally understand those who find it dense. I think she may just not be for you, because her writing is always in that style and the themes always stay in heavy topics.

I read Interview years ago, when it WAS a sensation. The thing about Claudia is, she's not a little girl anymore. And part of her story arc is that she comes to resent the fact that she's not a little girl anymore, but her body will never grow to match her mind. She becomes quite the little monster. A Fire Upon the Deep is a favorite of mine, but I confess that the first time I read it I had trouble understanding the underlying concept of the Zones of Thought. I thoroughly enjoyed the Tines (the hive mind dog creatures) and the Skroders (the tree like creatures) though. They're great people. But yeah, I think the book requires a fair bit of concentration. Love your purple dinosaur sweater (those are dinosaurs?)!

My 12-13 year old self adored Anne Rice. I guess at that age a lot of the problematic parts aren't really something that is noticed. It almost needs to be that shocking and melodramatic to get through to that age group. What I did notice after a few more years Anne Rice really needed an editor since there were some inconsistencies. Again, it did take me a few more years to realize that these novels were written more for her to deal with her internal struggles throughout the years and it highly shows. It gets wild in the later books. As for the tv series, yes you should watch it. Even if you didn't like the book, and if you liked the booked too it is very good. It does acknowledge very early that the story that Louis originally told the interviewer is very different than the story that is going to tell now. The overall theme of the series is how you remember things is not necessarily how they happened.

I've pretty much never read any Stephen King, and also mostly stay away from his movies, at least the ones that are "Stephen King-y" - as in horror. But I absolutely loved the movie Stand by Me, a heartfelt coming-of-age story, and was later shocked to find out it was from a short story by Stephen King... which was The Body. I have no idea what the story is like, but you should totally watch the movie!! I've thought of reading the collection you had there because it seemed like both movies made from the stories didn't seem like regular Stephen King fare, and were both excellent movies. Sounds like I should stick with the movies, though... I haven't seen the newest Anne Rice vampire movie (series??), but I did watch the Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt one after I'd read the book. Honestly, I think the moral dilemma about turning a child into a vampire was dealt with better in the book. I did think that wasn't just glossed over - at least one of the vampires felt really uncomfortable with it, and the girl who was turned was miserable being an eternal child, and as I recall they regretted it and vowed never to do that again. I felt it was much more lightly dealt with in the movie (but it's been years since both for me, so the memory is fuzzy...)

Interview has been one of my favorite books since I was around 13. The movie is still really good, it holds up. The show... eh.... I didn't care for it. I only watched one episode but I didn't care for the show. Side thing, apparently, Anne Rice wrote this book shortly after her daughter died who was around the same age as Claudia. I think it was some kind of catharsis or something. But also this is a 14 book series. I have only ever read the first book. I don't have it in me to read 14 books of her melodramatic writing. I do like Interview, but it is very melodramatic.

I think that’s happened only one other time, with Let the Right One In (child abuse). On a happier note, the cats are mega cute - I love how out of control Clawdia is!!

“She’s just pretending to love me.” 😂 It’s funny that you looked up the year before you started your sci-fi. If that was me and I saw it was published more than 10 years ago I’d immediately go no hahaha. I’m strict. 🙈

I had the same reaction to reading that Stephen King book. I finished the whole thing out of sheer stubbornness for my book club. You can just toss it - you're not missing anything. Apt Pupil was the worst story but the other two were just blah for me.

Different Seasons was the first Stephen King book I ever read, The Body was my favorite of the four but I liked all the stories but they are definitely intense and creepy

The Body is Stand By Me the movie. It’s about kids hearing there’s a body and going to find it.

I used to love Stephen King, my all-time favorite was Salem's Lot, funnily enough it is about vampires. Then, I read one of his novellas and it was extremely disturbing, so much so, that I have never picked up another book by him. I would un-haul it.

I have Interview with the vampire in my books to read. I was obsessed with the film when I was a teenager. As I can remember, the child is older in the film. My friend have a cat (Karma) that eat (not chew, swallow) fairy lights if they're low. I have to stop the video and look the translation of Different seasons, and it's split in two (two seasons each) in Spanish, that the reason I didn't recognize the title. Christmas?! 🤣 The ghosts are cute. I agree, King is a hit o miss.

Interview is supposedly Horror lol. I do similar to you with a tbr teapot. I am, however, just back from a big reader's con and spent over £500 on books and merch lol. 🙈

Haven’t watched Buffy?! Whaaaat? It’s a great show, at least until the last season. (Actually, the penultimate season is questionable as well.) Sarah Michelle Gellar is a truly great actor who doesn’t get nearly enough credit IMO.
