(Picking 144) How to decode most combination bike locks - Indirect Method!

The most reliable method to decode / pick / crack most bike locks is the "Indirect" method. It may not be the fastest method, but it's the most reliable one. It even works on some that have false gates.
Method:::
With this method, it's important to have constant strong tension while testing the wheels.
First of all, put all the numbers to zero on each wheel.
We will start with the wheel on the right (when numbers are oriented the correct way).
Let's call that wheel number 5 (ie wheel-5).
Tension the lock while at the same time turning wheel-4 back and forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn. Make sure to put wheel-4 back to zero.
Turn wheel-5 to the number 1.
Now tension the lock again while at the same time turning wheel-4 back & forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn.
Then turn wheel-5 to the number 2.
Test wheel-4 again...
Do this until you've tested all the numbers on wheel-5 (from 0 to 9) and take note which number on wheel-5 makes wheel-4 tough to turn. That is the correct number on wheel-5. Leave wheel-5 on that number.
Then repeat the process but leave wheel-5 alone (leave it on its correct number). This time we turn wheel-4 from 0 to 9, testing each time on wheel-3.
The number on wheel-4 that makes wheel-3 toughest to turn is the correct number for wheel-4.
Do the same for each wheel until you've got the correct numbers for wheel-5, 4, 3 and 2.
Now turn wheel 1 all the way around while tensioning the lock until it opens.
When I say "tension", I mean pull the lock at both ends as if you're trying to pull it open.

Well done for getting it open! LOL yea part of why I do these videos is to show people that combination bike locks aren't that secure. Do note however that most thieves don't decode combination bike locks, but instead most will cut the lock / cable etc (whether it be a combination lock or not). I would recommend a lock with a nice thick cable & shackle and one that is also a well known named brand. If you buy a cheap no-name brand then you are in danger because they use soft metal even though they may say hardened steel. A well known brand will actually use hardened steel. I recommend paying 10% to 15% of what your bike is worth on a bike lock. Again well done for decoding your lock!

Thanks. Helped a lot. I figured out a faster way to do the last 2 numbers. Once you have the first 3 numbers, just set each of the 10 numbers of the second rung one at a time while applying tension, and just scroll through the 1st bar numbers really fast until it pulls open. It's going to likely be faster and doesn't require the feel.

I certainly agree that this is the most reliable method. I just spent the last few hours trying to open a combination lock for my bike that I forgot. I tried all the other "direct" methods and variations thereof that I ran into in KZbin search. They all failed. I couldn't get the feedback they claimed I would have no matter how much I tried. In the end, this "Indirect" method was the only one that worked, and I suspect it would work on the broadest range of combination locks. Thank you!

Was able to use this method on a Masterlock cable combination- 8119DPFAU that my workmate forgot the code to, they seemed to be on the higher price range so wasn’t sure it would work but thought I’d give a go for fun anyways having never “picked” a lock before. After researching & perfecting the technique for an afternoon to get the tension right & get a feel for it it took no more than a couple hours as a beginner.. Further inspection their were 2 false gates on each wheel but nonetheless was still able to be cracked relatively easy (minus the raw fingers from tightly turning the wheel 😂) I got the first 3 turning & checking the next number then brute force for the last number. any tips for opening a master lock 8220D? it seems to have a prevention for this method by making the wheels nearly unturnable when under tension. thumbs are aching after just 10 minutes...

This method works on a lot of combination bike locks, but certainly not all. There are several other methods to try, but I don't have a master lock 8220D so I don't know which one (if any) will work. You could try and decode it like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poS8ZJiAr7KSppo ... or if that doesn't work for you then you could try some of the other methods I talk about in my videos: kzbin.infovideos ... look at the ones that look like bike locks, as I describe some other methods like the "wiggle" method etc. I would also recommend wearing gloves, and take lots of rest as yes you will get sore fingers. If you can find a "wiggle" method that works then it requires very little (and sometimes no) tension but I have no idea if your lock will be susceptible to that type of attack. Good luck!

I have mine with the cable already out and I can't get it back in don't know or l don't remember the combination how could I find it?

That should be easier to decode (with this type of lock) than if it were all the way in. If it's already out, tension it so that you are trying to close it all the way in (doesn't have to be a lot of tension, lightly does it, but make sure it's straight) and turn the wheel that's closest to the end until it pops in one slot, and then turn the 2nd to last until it pops in one more slot, and do the same for the next wheel etc until it slots all the way in. Lemme know how it does!

You could, but there is a much easier method for these sorts of locks when they are apart ... just tension it as if you're trying to close it, and turn the first wheel (the wheel closest to the opening) until it slots in one notch, and then make sure to keep the first wheel at that number (don't let it change as you turn the other wheels). Next turn the 2nd wheel until it slots in one grove further, and keep repeating it until the lock is all the way in, and that's your combination.

With this method, it's important to have constant strong tension while testing the wheels. Method: Put all the numbers to zero on each wheel. We will start with the wheel on the right (when numbers are oriented the correct way). Let's call that wheel number 5 (ie wheel-5). Tension the lock while at the same time turning wheel-4 back and forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn. Make sure to put wheel-4 back to zero. Turn wheel-5 to the number 1. Now tension the lock again while at the same time turning wheel-4 back & forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn. Then turn wheel-5 to the number 2. Test wheel-4 again... Do this until you've tested all the numbers on wheel-5 (from 0 to 9) and take note which number on wheel-5 makes wheel-4 tough to turn. That is the correct number on wheel-5. Leave wheel-5 on that number. Then repeat the process but leave wheel-5 alone (leave it on its correct number). This time we turn wheel-4 from 0 to 9, testing each time on wheel-3. The number on wheel-4 that makes wheel-3 toughest to turn is the correct number for wheel-4. Do the same for each wheel until you've got the correct numbers for wheel-5, 4, 3 and 2. Now turn wheel 1 all the way around while tensioning the lock until it opens. When I say "tension", I mean pull the lock at both ends as if you're trying to pull it open.

I was able to get the last 2 numbers. When I got to the 3rd number, I couldn't tell the difference anymore, I just decided to try from 000 to 999. Luckily it unlocked at 051. Hahaha! Thank you so much 💖

The postage to New Zealand is another 4 times as much, so it makes it ridiculous for me to buy it (and it's not sold in NZ). The first suggestion is that you try the indirect method but pull really hard (and wear gloves). Some of my viewers have been able to stand on the cable with their foot to tension it more, or you might be able to get two friends to wear gloves and pull (leaning back with their weight) while you test the resistance of the wheels. The indirect method requires a *lot* of tension. The indirect method doesn't work on some locks though. Also do you find any "stuck" points like in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoipZqmfZpiUZ8k ? You might have to try different amounts of tension. Try to determine which number on the first wheel makes the 2nd wheel the tightest to turn in general.
