(Picking 144) How to decode most combination bike locks - Indirect Method!

The most reliable method to decode / pick / crack most bike locks is the "Indirect" method. It may not be the fastest method, but it's the most reliable one. It even works on some that have false gates.
Method:::
With this method, it's important to have constant strong tension while testing the wheels.
First of all, put all the numbers to zero on each wheel.
We will start with the wheel on the right (when numbers are oriented the correct way).
Let's call that wheel number 5 (ie wheel-5).
Tension the lock while at the same time turning wheel-4 back and forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn. Make sure to put wheel-4 back to zero.
Turn wheel-5 to the number 1.
Now tension the lock again while at the same time turning wheel-4 back & forward. Take note of how tough it is to turn.
Then turn wheel-5 to the number 2.
Test wheel-4 again...
Do this until you've tested all the numbers on wheel-5 (from 0 to 9) and take note which number on wheel-5 makes wheel-4 tough to turn. That is the correct number on wheel-5. Leave wheel-5 on that number.
Then repeat the process but leave wheel-5 alone (leave it on its correct number). This time we turn wheel-4 from 0 to 9, testing each time on wheel-3.
The number on wheel-4 that makes wheel-3 toughest to turn is the correct number for wheel-4.
Do the same for each wheel until you've got the correct numbers for wheel-5, 4, 3 and 2.
Now turn wheel 1 all the way around while tensioning the lock until it opens.
When I say "tension", I mean pull the lock at both ends as if you're trying to pull it open.

Well done for getting it open! LOL yea part of why I do these videos is to show people that combination bike locks aren't that secure. Do note however that most thieves don't decode combination bike locks, but instead most will cut the lock / cable etc (whether it be a combination lock or not). I would recommend a lock with a nice thick cable & shackle and one that is also a well known named brand. If you buy a cheap no-name brand then you are in danger because they use soft metal even though they may say hardened steel. A well known brand will actually use hardened steel. I recommend paying 10% to 15% of what your bike is worth on a bike lock. Again well done for decoding your lock!

I was so devestated when i my combination got changed all of a sudden i went to many shops to get it fixed but they couldnt do it and i tries everything, every trick i could find that my country has to offer. Was able to use this method on a Masterlock cable combination- 8119DPFAU that my workmate forgot the code to, they seemed to be on the higher price range so wasn’t sure it would work but thought I’d give a go for fun anyways having never “picked” a lock before. After researching & perfecting the technique for an afternoon to get the tension right & get a feel for it it took no more than a couple hours as a beginner.. Further inspection their were 2 false gates on each wheel but nonetheless was still able to be cracked relatively easy (minus the raw fingers from tightly turning the wheel 😂) I got the first 3 turning & checking the next number then brute force for the last number. Yea partly I do these videos to show how someone can recover their lost combination, and partly to educate people that combination bike locks aren't that secure. If someone has an expensive bike, I would recommend spending the money on a (named brand) key lock with a thick cable ... yea it's a hassle carrying around a key, but at least it's more secure. Thanks. Helped a lot. I figured out a faster way to do the last 2 numbers. Once you have the first 3 numbers, just set each of the 10 numbers of the second rung one at a time while applying tension, and just scroll through the 1st bar numbers really fast until it pulls open. It's going to likely be faster and doesn't require the feel.

Excellent! Well done for getting it open. Yea I have lots of comments like that, where people try lots of other videos but this is the only one that worked. To change your combination code, once open, you have to turn the end dial thingy. It usually has an arrow on it showing you which way to turn it. It's difficult to turn sometimes, and you have to turn it all the way until it stops turning. Some locks show you when you've turned far enough as you'll be able to see a red square appear (but not all locks do that). Sometimes it doesn't move all the way until I slightly wiggle the wheels (the wheels with numbers on them). Once it's turned, set it to a new combination code and then turn the change-dial back and that's it (so then close it and scramble the wheels as usual). I would recommend you change only one dial to one number different, just to see if it works, and if it does then do it properly.

Most thieves cut bike locks. They don't bother with decoding as it's too slow. Some opportunistic thieves do "give it a go" if they have no tools and see a combination lock. Part of why I do these videos is to show people that combination locks are susceptible to decoding methods, and they aren't as safe as they think with combination locks.

Got the first two digits with relative ease. After that, could detect no differences in the dial stiffness when trying to proceed. I've gone back three or four times now and always the same getting caught in midstream. The lock, very similar to that used here.

Hmmm *if* the first two numbers are really correct, you could brute force the last two wheels by trying every combination ... it shouldn't take too long. If it opens then good, and if it doesn't then you know the first two numbers are not correct.

Using my left fingers to spin the pins helped a lot, I tried doing it with my right fingers and I cant detect whether it was stiff or my fingers were unable to spin the pins due to pulling the handle with my right hand

Great work 👍 I have not yet played around with bike locks that much, seems like they are quite unsafe even with 5 numbers. No false gates are a no-go in combination locks in my opinion... Thanks for sharing this! I will check out your other video with the quicker method as well! Cheers 🍻

It's interesting that some bike locks do have false gates, and check out my video 61 where it's a very high quality bike lock with seemingly false gates on every number, where I found that the correct gate on the first wheel would bind not only the next wheels, but *all* the wheels ... and since the next wheel so so tough to turn on *any* number it was impossible for me to find out if the next wheel was tougher on the correct gate, but I managed to test the wheels further down. It's a little bit like how you where testing the tightness of the last wheel in the method you found. Then in my video 88 I found a much quicker way, from a suggestion from one of my viewers 😜😜
