Thanks a lot to Kris ('The One' / channel ) from whom I received this nice Master 178. Unlike the Master Combination Lock 175, the 178 has tighter tolerances on the wheels and the decoding tool get deflected when trying to push it in to lift the lever (see videos • (picking 431) Master c... and • (picking 472) Great pa... . Here I show you a brand new bypass method that works also on the 178 very well. It just needs a little bit widening the gap with a screwdriver and a sheet metal shim can slide in to push on the lever and the lock will open.

Did the remove the thin metal plate that is usually wedged there to put tension on the wheels?

Very good point. You can see that plate here kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp6vo6pqhs-LsMk for a second. When I started to inspect the disassembled lock (model 175) for weaknesses, this plate was somewhere laying around and I didn't pay attention. Now I wonder why my bypass actually worked so well. Maybe they changed the shape of this plate on the 178. With the plate-design of the 175 I cannot imaging how you would access the lever - but it worked after some attempts. Now when I turn the wheels on the 178 they feel a bit loose and also the internals of the lock seem to rattle a bit when I shake it. So my bypass might have cause some damage to that plate. I would love to see a disassembled 178, but I don't wanna destroy mine.

Great work on finding a new bypass Potti. If anyone was going to find a new bypass for a combination lock, I knew it would be you. Your cut out lock, and explanation, really helps show how the mechanism works.

A hammered flat picture hanging support with the little saw tooth pattern. I bent it to match your bend and the lock opened right up. Thanks again as this lock has been on my rescued dog's crate for over 11 years. Popped it off in less than the time it took to round up the tools.

My 178d apparently no longer opens with the combo I had set it to, so I am going to see if this works instead of destructive entry

Pay attention Master Lock!!!! The simple fix is not always the full fix. This method is exploitable in the 175 as well. But the simple bypass was the method of choice. Time to make a model #180 Master. One that really is tough under fire. Super job Pottie!!! All would have and have passed right by this method and go straight to old faithful. Lol I personally would never have thought to do it this way. But a cut bent piece of sheet metal will have a permanent home in my bag. Thanks for sharing buddy

Thank you - I would like to mention that there is this plate for the wheels (see pinned comment) that I just considered now. So the 175 (and probably also the 178) is actually shielded but my bypass attempts have managed to overcome this barrier.

Cheers buddy. I was just pointed to the plate for the wheel (see pinned comment) - so maybe there has a bit more unrecognized destruction happened (of the plate) for this method to work. Or they changed the design of the plate on the 178. But finally it worked pretty well.

Yes, after a while of fumbling around with the lock I got the hang on it and the got the method to work. But you need to be very precise and I'm not sure about the plate for the wheels now (see pinned comment) - maybe I deformed it while conducting the bypass attempts. So maybe this is not really a practical attack for the wild.

What if you weld the gap where you've managed to push in the screw driver.. all the way around.. would it make it secure significantly?

Potti314 I watched the second video. Very clever again. It's interesting that you could actually damage the Master lock with that piece of thin sheet metal. I wonder if the "plate" that you mentioned is not actually held in place by anything except the external skin of the lock. Inserting the small screwdriver would then distort the skin and allow the plate to fall out of place. Either way, Master Lock again fails to make its lock we are.

Thank you. After reading the (now) pinned comment I realized that it's actually shielded by the plate that lets the wheels "click". But somehow I have bypassed or deformed this plate. Anyhow - an open is an open ;-)

FYI the newer productions of the Master 175 is no longer bypassable and are designed more like the 178 shown in the video. No bypassing or decoding.
@Potti314
@Potti314 6 жыл бұрын
OK, I see. After having received information from a viewer that the 178 can be bypassed in the usual way, I tried a brand new decoding knife which is thinner as the worn one that I used for my initial tests. It's much harder to get it in but still possible with some effort. So the 178 can indeed be bypassed the usual way. I will soon make an update video.

They slightly improved the tolerances. But a new decoding knife is a very powerful tool. I doubt that it's technically impossible to make it safe against bypass. This method it out for so long now - wonder that they still can sell these locks.
