(Picking 49) Rolson combination padlock decoded "out of the packet" (decoded)

I decode open another combination padlock "out of the packet" - this time a Rolson 4-wheel combination padlock - it's a fun lock with 4 false gates per wheel.

I had a lock that looked exactly like the one in this video and I couldn't open it, I first tried the solution in this video and failed. then I watched the video number 136 that you mentioned as an alternative in the comments below. the solution method there worked for me, thank you very much :) it took me 24 hours but I finally solved it.

Thank you so much for this video. It's very well explained, I tried the paper clip method but it wasn't working. This is much more efficient. The feeling of finally getting it opened was one of the greatest feelings I've had in a long time.

I wonder if all the wheels start off with the false gates in the same place. If that's the case it should be possible to get each wheel to the same position between the false gates and then turn them all together one place at a time until it opens.

I think I know what you mean and I think you're half right. Actually, of the two pairs, eg 3,5 and 8,0 the true gate appears to be on 1st number on one of the pairs for each wheel, but the problem is we don't know which of the two pairs to pick on. We could test each combination of 1st number pairs for each wheel, eg for the first wheel the gates are 3,5 & 8,0 so we'd just test 3 & 8 for that wheel, and we'd do all the combinations of 2 numbers per wheel (combinations or permutations I should say) and that may speed things up. I'm not 100% sure that the true gate always falls on the first number of a pair (as I only have a sample size of 4 wheels) but it probably is. It's safer to test how much "play" (travel) each gate has on the wheel, and the gate with the most play will be the true gate. That method is used on many other locks with false gates, even ones that have gates on every 2nd number, so it's a more general technique. Well done for thinking about how to get a deeper understanding. BTW - for combination locks where we can use a thin piece of metal as a probe (I've done videos on some locks that can be decoded like that), we find the one true gate per wheel, but we have to turn all the wheels one number at a time until the gates are in the right position for the lock to open (ie the gates are in the correct position to let the teeth pass though). Thank you, great explanation. I watched a couple of others this got me there in under a minute. For me, with the tension on, it goes slack when you get the right number. Starting from the top to the bottom worked for me.

What do you do when 1 number is stuck. I brought it like this. Its unlocked but 1 number won't move

I haven't come across that before! So that one wheel doesn't turn? ... even when the shackle is closed? What about when changing the combination to a new one, will it still not move? It might be broken.

So it's open but wont close because the combination isn't right? Maybe the numbers are nearly right (and just got bumped while the lock was open), so try some numbers either side of where they are. If that doesn't work, you'll have to decode it. It should be the same method, but instead of pulling on the shackle to get tension, push on the shackle instead (ie as if you're trying to close it). With these sorts of locks, you should be able to do the same thing but tension the shackle by pushing (to close) instead of pulling. It *should* be exactly the same.

Aj I just sorted that problem out. What you need to do is press the lock down. You need to do it constantly. Then find rotate the numbers until they become really tight. It took me about 45 minutes but I eventually locked it. Then I unlocked it and changed the code

This lock has false gates ... don't feel too bad as it's a difficult lock and requires an advanced technique to open (which most people can't do). Do you detect any false gates? Also see me video 52 where I decode a very similar lock. If that still doesn't work, try the "indirect" method that I use in my video 136.

@@reni_ayv if it feels like it's about to open, then you're probably stuck on one or more false gates ... you need to try changing the wheels to different gates (one at a time etc). Good luck!
