also, there’s “hobbyist” gunsmiths. Like, real, but also for a hobby. Not hobby as in fake and not serious. Hobby as in for real but not as a job. For example my dad’s. Has full FFL clearance and builds and works on guns. But is all word of mouth only and is retired from his main oil and gas career, highly successful. And, only builds a few guns a year, and, worked on my dad’s gun for free because he just likes my dad or something. Full shop. K not cnc barrel making machine full. But full hobbyist type shop to do reloading and tweak scopes and barrels and to build guns from parts kits and stuff. And he does not work a full time schedule.

1st home defense rifle: Classic AR-15 (I agree w/MAC), or a Mini-14. If all calibers are considered: Get a PCC in 9x19 from a reputable manufacturer for your first. Also, God bless Paul Harrell.

I think that too many people utilize a 5.56 rifle without assessing overpenetration. I live in the suburbs and my rifles are absolutely not utilized as a home defense option. I however have quite a bit of training with handguns, so 19X is my choice. I do agree with a reliable pcc for most new gun owners though.

@Catgat37 100% agree. My 1st "home defense rifle" was in fact a PCC chambered in 45 ACP for the very reason of better assurance I wouldn't shoot an innocent neighbor through a wall. ARs are for outdoors, IMO. When you need to use your indoor voice, PCC is the choice.

Nor a conspiracy theorist God willing I’ll never shoot anything other than targets or game But I did have to get realistic with my self over what I’m spending my money on My brother collects guns but is single as I’m married with kids. Ar15 for sure… if they want a brand name I suggest BCM or DD if they want to spend more. After that I recommend a good PCC, specifically the scorpion. Next, if a friend wants a 308 or 6.5 I recommend the buy once cry once scar 17. As far as pistols go I recently changed my recommendation from the Glock 19 to the Sig P365 Macro for a 9mm all purpose pistol. If they ask for a shotgun for home defense recommendation I tell them PCC or AR. Bolt guns is more complicated imo so there is no one answer to give.

Is a FAL from DSA, with plenty of parts availability, or a M1A with its parts availability, a better choice for a first/primary rifle than an AR-15? I think so. Is it as affordable to shoot? Obviously not, but not by a wide margin. The FAL and M1A are reliable systems, and can be acquired for the same price as a high-end AR. Size and weight constraints are significant factors, but if your unique situation does not demand high mobility, then having the added firepower and extended range for defensive purposes could be a decisive advantage.

A lot of times, people shouldn’t worry about cost if it’s your primary self-defense rifle. If you’re buying something, just a dick around with the range, spend as little as possible. But you don’t want a malfunction when it’s life and death.
@nozrep
@nozrep 7 ай бұрын
k i understand that but and or a lot of times people have no choice but to worry about price because, you know, because of their job or income level. Comment reads as if most people make more than 60k USD. And they do not, in the USA, not even now. Allow me to rephrase, price is ALWAYS an important consideration. In concert and combined with quality. Such as PSA, lower prices combined with acceptable quality. Not the best, but, definitely acceptable as many videos do testify. Also, there’s expensive brands with shitty quality and of course those are the worst. Consideration of price and quality are ALWAYS relevant and necessary in EVERY purchase of any kind anywhere in life. Especially self defense or food providing systems involving salt peter.
@nozrep
@nozrep 7 ай бұрын
cost itself becomes a life and death situation if you spend thousands USD on a gun and either forget to buy food for yourself or choose not to. So, yah, again, cost with quality is literally always a relevant and extremely important consideration. Although it is in theory possible that a shtf scenario could happen where you have to shoot someone because they have food and you don’t. That woul be real real bad. We do not want that. We want to help each other defend each others foodstuffs.

It is an annoying argument that the stoner rifle is the best do all SHTF rifle simply because it is the most common. Nothing will ever change if we don’t change our purchasing habits. I’d hate to see people buying the inferior Stoner rifles 20 years from now simply because of the same argument you make today. Rhetoric AR180 varieties are a huge improvement. Odd that the spear lt doesn’t have a forward charging handle(maybe to preserve weight?) I think the Galil ace or any modern long stroke piston rifle is likely the best do all SHTF rifle but there are obviously pros and cons to every design

I agree that a more "basic" AR is the best choice if that is your only/first rifle. I would recommend just a couple of things over just an "M4" clone. 1. An M-lok handguard for simplifying adding attachments which people will inevitably want, and 2. a mid-length gas system, which makes the gun more pleasant to shoot. Other than that, simpler (parts commonality) is probably better. Kudos to Donut, MAC, and everyone else supporting Paul Harrell. From what I’ve seen in gun shops they try to steer the customer towards the most expensive option and if you listen close you can tell the person behind the counter is untrained. It’s sad.

@@JohnnyReb-tr2fs Same here - being a total newbie I ended up not buying anything, and still haven't - still trying to determine who to trust. It doesn't help that I live in a very restrictive state.

Plan on having no parts available, be your own armory, for whatever you choose. Even when times are "good" it's hard to find proprietary parts.

One of the best features of the AR15 is when something isn't going right it's easy to narrow down what the problem is. That problem is usually inexpensive to correct and most likely doesn't require a gunsmith or armorer. My first AR wss nothing but problems. I took all my surplus GI mags and replaced the followers with Magpul brand and went ahead and replaced the springs with chrome silicon type. That was over 15 years ago and i havent had a malfunction since then. Keep it pretty clean and lubed up. I think this video is pretty solid advice.

If you live in America buy an AR and a Glock. If you live somewhere else buy an AK and a Glock. That's pretty much the algorithm.

When you own enough AR'S you have parts around everywhere and that's definitely not a bad thing also you can build them in many configurations I love AR'S and AK'S

I own ar15 and few other firearms and I'd say 5.56 rifles are not the greatest defensive options. For home defense, I'd pick some pcc instead, like cz scorpion and HP 9mm ammo. ar15 is more long-range weapon also super loud, especially indoors.

There are lots of good rifles out there, many I say make a great choice. However if I’m making recommendations to someone new to it all, I’d say either an AR or AK. The parts, accessories, etc. are out there for them. They’re well understood, and there is a good reason they are so long lived.

Paul Harrell is the BOSS, so my T-shirt order is in. I will always where it with pride and respect for the master gun tuber. If you see this Paul, I have been with you from the beginning, and will stick with you till the end. I'm a cancer survivor of 23 years now myself, so I understand to some small degree.

AR-15 hands down. It's modular like a Lego set. Custom build from parts to suit. Don't need "Gucci Gear". Plenty of solidly made components that won't break the bank. Repair in field can use what's available that works and will suffice temporarily. First rifle as an adult was M14. Second was M16A1. Current Ar-15 is more flexible than the M16A1 or M16A2.

AR all day, everyday. After my second trip to 'the sandbox' (Iraq) I wanted something 'better' than Mister Stoner's design. Yeah, it can't be found. I did end up purchasing a SIG 556, which I still have and it's an amazing rifle, but the AR is far easier to maintain, customize, justify its use... A part breaks on the SIG and I'm selling a kidney to fix it.

I love the AR platform. And I now have the tools to start building my own rifles. So my question is. Out of all the parts kits out there, which ones have the best reliability? Mainly I'm talking about the FCGs. I like dealing with PSA and I've purchased four of the H&R retro m16a1 rifles and I'm pleased with those. And if the PSA brand of parts kits are reliable I'll use them in my builds in the future. How can anyone not love this rifle ?

Paul’s the Mr Rogers of the 2A community. We grew up watching Paul or grew with Paul’s videos. I can swing $30. So I bought a shirt. So we can identify each other in the wild, I’ll be wearing mine. Which is important because the Virginia house and senate passed an assault weapon and high capacity magazine ban last week.

100% agree. AR 15, M4 platform for all the reasons you said. You did a video a long time ago on the Colt LE6920 being the best AR15 carbine for around 1K…I took that advice and have never regretted it. My first long gun. Put and Aimpoint PRO, a sling, and a white light on it and it’s everything you need / nothing you don’t. I don’t know if new Colt’s are as good…I have heard they farm out most of the parts now.
