Best advice I ever received was to stop using my purple hammer, and to use a plastic ball instead. I am too rev dominant, and I struggle with my consistency on my ten pins. I was probably around 60% when I used my purple hammer, compared to now where I’m around 90%. The small adjustment help me get my average from 142 to around 170. Two or three spares a game makes a huge difference. I 100% agree with Nick, go out and invest in a plastic ball

Agreed. Most League Bowlers cannot change their release for spares, so a shiny plastic ball would be the best option for them. I am like Brunsnick, I do not wipe the oil off my urethane ball when shooting a 10 pin. The extra oil helps it slide towards the pin better without hooking away.

Something I learned a while back was to close my index and pinky fingers up against the middle and ring fingers to throw straighter at spares. It can take enough of the rotation away at your release to make a difference when shooting at a 10 pin. You often hear people suggest spreading out your index finger as far as you can to help get more rotation if you're struggling with leaving corner pins and this would be the opposite of that. I have a plastic ball but there have been many times when it seems like the only ball I'm getting a clean release out of is the ball I'm already using and this tip has saved many a game for me.

I stand at 35 and throw/loft the ball out to the third arrow (board 15). But I must make sure that my right arm is in front of my right leg when I do it. If it is off to the side of my body, the shot will likely miss to the right and go in the gutter. Some days I can hit the 10-pin no problem using my system and I throw with confidence. Other days, that pin looks so far away and I doubt myself too much and sure enough will miss it. Sometimes I throw it too far to the left of the 10-pin because I didn't line up at the correct angle to hit it (you would think I'd at least clip the left corner of the pin but that rarely happens, instead I miss it by what looks like a fraction of a fraction of a fraction). Had the 6-pin been standing, it would have been a great shot.

Currently working on flattening my wrist and rolling as straight as possible to pick up 10 pins, and will use every ball in my arsenal when practising this. I have a mild reactive that I use in tournaments, but using the more aggressive balls is forcing the technique to get better!

For the most part, I've always used my strike ball to pick up my spares. As a right-hander, to pick up the 10-pin, I have my usual spot to stand on the left side of the approach and will throw the ball over 16, sort of using the 3rd arrow as my guide. I will throw the ball straight and hard, with a relatively firm plant at the foul line. It has been what works most consistently for me and I don't have to fumble with messing with a different feel of the thumb hole or change the switch-grip.

I used to have a dedicated "spare ball" that was just a different reactive ball I pretty much only used for spares. I just got my first spare ball hoping to improve my 7-pin pickups (lefty). I’m no pro, only carry about a 193 average but I will say I just picked up 7 for 7 last day after a season of about 50%. I say the 2 things that helped and hopefully wasn’t a fluke was the plastic ball and I angle my feet at the 10 pin. Not sure if pros would agree about feet angled at 10 pin but man was I excited 😂 That is along with keeping wrist flat like he said and moving over to around board 30ish like he said. Think only thing I added was the feet angled to the 10

I always have been pretty good at my corner pins. I just started bowling again for first time in about 20 years. My ball was bought in 1997. After 8 weeks I did just fine with picking those corner pins up. But strike ball was not very strong. Invested in a Archetype hybrid just a couple days ago. Have practiced with it & it is near impossible for me to pick up that 10 pin now. Completely different finger drilling & have to get used to the hook in my mid 60's & went with a 14 lb ball. Last ball was 16 lbs. Was hoping to pick up just a little bit of speed but from the speed dectector looks like I am throwing it slower.

Nick--in these comments, you mentioned opening your shoulders toward your cross-lane target. What do you see as the pros and cons of doing that, versus facing the corner pin directly, from a far cross-lane position, so that the bowler is forced to keep everything square and in line with the 10 or 7 pin?

Just out of curiosity how would you get a usable video of the release? I mean the camera would need to be zoomed in to his hand at the point of releasing the ball which seems pretty difficult. I know they do amazing close-ups of action shots in the movies but I think that's CGI and other types of filming techniques I wouldn't expect from a KZbin video. @@jodroogmans9374 I don't understand why having the camera directly behind Nick would tell the OP anything the OP can't figure out with Nick's current format. Obviously Nick is walking straight forward and throwing straight forward. But maybe the OP has something specific in mind they think would be more helpful. I'd be curious to get a little more clarification on what the OP had in mind and why.

Good question. I then walk towards the target. You will have to eventually find what is comfortable for you. If the lanes are oily I shoot different than if the lanes are dry. You have to find that sweet spot. One thing, don't wait for the game to practice. If you are in league, practice during warmup. Remember. Striking is easier than picking up the 10 pin consistently. Nothing feels worse than hitting the pocket leaving a ten and not picking it up.

Question. I am a relatively new bowler. Been bowling about a year now. When I have to pick up a 7 pin it's relatively easy for me because my ball hooks to the left and all I have to do is throw it at the 5th arrow and it hooks to the 7 pin most of the time. But for the life of me I can't seem to pick up the 10 pin consistently. The ball either goes straight ahead or into the gutter if I use my plastic ball or hooks away from the 10 pin if I use my hooking strike ball. Is there a ball that hooks to the right for right handed bowlers? If so I figure I can throw it at the first arrow and it would hook to the right later down the lane and hit the 10 pin. Just the opposite of what I do to get the 7 pin.

Imagine. I still use my old plastic ball, 40 years old. My average for two leagues a week is 196. I throw pretty much a straight shot. In tournaments, when the Lanes break down for the monster hook balls, my old plastic ball starts to work. So I wouldn't want ABC to outlaw my old ball. Wayne Web back in the day would use his 20 year old AMF three dot in tournaments. A few of us are still using old tools and getting away with it.

picking up the 10 pin - or any easier spare - is not hard! For me missing any spare comes down to mechanics. I may not have started my Approach in synch with my arm swing or the ball might slip slightly off my thumb causing me to grab it. sticking on my slide in other words, of good control of some type) (for any no thumbers (accurate name for '2-handers' also) maybe a balance issue with the ball on your wrist etc.) But it comes down to anything that prevents a smooth flowing shot at the spare. In other words something might have gone slightly+ wrong in the approach or the shot . If everything goes as planned then we're talking about this video which is mostly decision making. And that's the final step to making spares.

My goal is to leave the 10 pin when I miss. It indicates I was close to striking and it is the easiest common leave. Hitting high and leaving the 4 pin indicates I am risking splitting and am losing control. A 7 pin indicates I was way off pocket. An 8 or 9 pin indicates a good shot and payback for getting strikes I didn't deserve on previous shots. A 2 pin indicates too much entry angle. While a 5 pin is embarrassing.

Good basic advice. But eventually each bowler must work out this corner pin for himself. Look at old videos of Eral Anthony and Mark Roth taking out the corner pin. Each has a different technique. Personally, I have adopted how Roth takes the ten pin out. But others may prefer how Anthony did, which was the 7 pin for him because he was left handed. I see the majority of people using Anthony's technique . Which in my opinion you have to be more accurate.

Single pin spares. You have an error equal to the width of the pin plus two times the width of the ball throwing cross lane which amounts to about 20". Use a non hooking cheap plastic ball to almost eliminate varying lane conditions. You should almost never miss. Single pins anywhere on the lane are far and away the easiest to convert of any spare.
