It's also not inconceivable that Don Vito has and regularly carries a pocket watch. Given his advanced age (figure about 70 years old in 1950?) he would have certainly been carrying one in the 1900s and 1910s when he was in his 20s and 30s. It might have been a hard habit to break for him as a man of tradition.

The Hannnibal Lechter selection is spot on, simply because of the complexity of the watch face. Perfect. Here’s my input: Austin Powers, international man of mystery. His watch, a British Pinion R -1969 . Similar to but not exactly an Omega chrono.

Nope. The Godfather would wear a pocket watch, not a wristwatch. And almost nobody would know what type because he would never take it out. That is what underbosses and underlings are for.

I was thinking of that too - tank, or perhaps the rolex president also. Well i have to agree, the calatrava is the best choice.

@@TanBengQiao wrong generation of gangster. Also, Vito Corleone died in the early 50s before the Presidential was invented, or shortly after. Edit. just Googled these facts. So in the original film, or maybe in the novel, Vito Corleone dies in 1955, and the last couple of years of his life he was semi retired, so Michael ran the family business. The Presidential was introduced by Rolex in 1956, a year after Vito Corleone died.

Teddy, loved the idea. Your reverse engineering, as someone put it, works perfectly. Some strong characters from some very diverse movies. Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, One Flew over the Cucko's Nest, Back to the Future (both characters), Alien, Matrix, Shawshank Redemption to name just a few. I am quite older than your average fan I believe, but always learning something with you. Keep it up.

Perfect! Except for "Lecter" (Lecktor). I think his mind is so keen, he doesn't need the chrono. Thinking an H Moser would be more his style.
@Sakomaru7073 жыл бұрын
Really cool concept for the video. We've all had enough of just checking "who paid to have their watch on this character's wrist". Your reverse-engineering is way more interesting. I'm wondering about Hannibal's watch, but all the others are absolutely spot on. Btw I love seeing so many completely different watches that I haven't heard of. From time to time it's good to watch something that isn't just a buyer's guide 👌
@fletcherhamilton31773 жыл бұрын
Weirdly, as elegant as Hannibal is, I don’t see him as a ‘watch guy’. He’d have something decent but understated, as I think anything too horologically _haute couture_ would offend him. He wouldn’t wear a piece that was in anyway intended to draw attention to itself. Maybe a Longines, or considering his history with Japan, a Grand Seiko. Understated elegance, functional, reliable, not too gaudy . . .
@jibmo99103 жыл бұрын
It is hard to say if Hannibal is a watch guy or not, but I would imagine that he would either not wearing a time piece or wearing something truly exquisite. When Clarice first met him he could tell what kind of skin cream and perfume she wears, and her cheap shoes with just a glance (mocking her as a rube). The drawing of Duomo with all the fine detail just from his memory, suggested that he is a person with great appreciation of art and beauty (and knows a lot about europe). Another tell was from the scene when he was killing the deputy officers, while enjoying Bach's Goldbery variation. If he owns a time piece, I don't think it would be any main brands like Patek, AP, JL, but most likely from an independent watchmaker. If he is a "real person" living today, I would have to say a Philippe Dufour 's Duality suits him really well (since Hannibal is both brillant and insane).
@tonybebb723 жыл бұрын
I don't see it either. The qualities listed are all accurate, but I don't see him having something with that many complications. I see simplicity in function more than something excessively complicated. Something more like a vintage Omega Constellation.
@fletcherhamilton31773 жыл бұрын
@@jibmo9910 - here's my detailed thinking on the matter; 1) As a gentleman, Hannibal would regard it as vulgar to check the time, or even need to do so. 2) He's retired, so he wouldn't really need to check, and would probably consider doing so contrary to leisurely indulgence. 3) I don't think his preferences for all things 'exquisite' would actually extend to _all_ things. In the books he demonstrates he's somewhat of a car person (Jaguar), but beyond the culinary and artistic, little mention is made of items outside of those pursuits (i.e., cutlery, lacquered picnic hampers, etc.). 4) He might conversely regard any watch - even 'luxury' pieces - as mere 'conveniences' of the people who he would regard as the 'hoi poloi' . . . However, as Harris didn't really adorn Hannibal with details to the extent of bestowing the character distinct and even quite specific brand preferences as Fleming did with James Bond, I agree that there is much room for speculation. It is very tempting to assume that Hannibal would have some extremely elegant, intricate and discreet rose-gold Patek hidden under his cuff with all the secrecy as the Spyderco civilian he keeps hidden under the other . . . But again, I don’t actually see Hannibal as someone who’d be lusting after the best timepiece. Personally I'm guessing he'd have something elegant but also relatively overlooked in horological enthusiast fields, and fairly discreet. I'd think an Omega Constellation - the 1982 ~ iteration with the 'claws' on the side of the case (to mirror his knife or symbolize his predatory nature??). Exquisite, but in a quiet and not really eye-catching way, and flat enough to easily to hide under a shirt cuff. This is my guess! 😅

Great Video, Teddy! I think your pick of the Patek with Tiffany dial is spot on for the Godfather, and thank you for choosing the Timex over the Swatch for Ferris Bueller. As for Forrest Gump, however, I would go for something like Bulova MIL-W-3818A or Hamilton MIL-W-46374 rather than the Glycine. He was in the Army Special Services, and I feel that the Glycine GMT is a bit too much of a pilot's watch.

Funnily enough, Teddy's choice for Hannibal isnt too far off for what they chose to fashion Mads Mikkelsen's wrist with for the show. According to the Prop Store auction listing, it was a year/month/day/date multi-calendar watch with a day/night faux-moonphase complication, and falsely branded as a Zenith El Primero in the upper portion of the dial, which implies that the costuming department probably wanted a watch that had both a calendar and chronograph function, similar to what Teddy speculates Lecter would use.

Man. One miss after another. Indiana Jones, Gump, and Burgundy were clear misses. No way Gump wears that watch and Burgundy would never wear that understated and way too expensive for him reverso. The Patek was a decent choice for Vito.
