It makes me sad that kids in the comments are too shy to even go into a Zumiez to get into the hobby. As a kid in the 90's I used to have to deal with the local shops in my hometown who would cringe when you'd walk in and let me tell you, it didn't exactly make you want to continue the pursuit. That said, I stuck with it - skateboarding is now one of the most important things for me week to week and it's improved almost every facet of my life. Don't let what others say or do affect your development in anything you do. Advice is nice, but there's a distinction between a constructive criticism and a toxic put down. Head up, eyes forward and walk into that local. If your local is a Zumiez, that's okay too. Enjoy skating!

I completely agree...there's a lot of hate because of "it's a corporation" but zumiez does more for skating and the skate community than a lot of other places...and most brands wouldn't be as big as they are if it wasn't for zumiez so I'd say thanks to the impact we have as a company the skating industry was able to survive..of course they're not the only ones that have an impact but still!
@blakericketts46624 жыл бұрын
KeeganCo Personally I don’t think that it’s Zumiez as a company I think that they are so much inexperience skaters they hire and a bunch of kids buying merch who don’t skate it gives it a bad rep as being a poser store.There are some very helpful employees and good stores but I think it’s mainly the fact that kids are wearing “Thrasher” and other popular skate brands without knowing what it’s about drives people insane. I shop at zumiez even though I don’t have a board, not because I’m a poser just that I’m not in the position to get one even though I’ve been into skating for a while so I guess it’s the fact that people go their for clothes instead of decks and actual skate items.
@Keegan_Co4 жыл бұрын
@@blakericketts4662 that is very true but that's how trends go and some of these brands are still around because of these trends and I myself hate it because of it but if it wasnt for places like zumiez that (depending on stores) sell skate to skaters or actually care about brands then some of these brands wouldn't be around today and that's a very sad fact...I know some local shops in bigger cities do really well and they help brands thrive but for small towns like this it's very difficult to keep brands alive and true...my store tends to have more of a local skate shop mentality and I do wish we got back to the skate roots but the company itself brings in a lot of other brands just to help them grow or start out and they help build other business because of that so there's an upside and a down side but I do agree with you
@keneh99944 жыл бұрын
this is so facts
@blakericketts46624 жыл бұрын
KeeganCo Yeah you are right from a business standpoint a lot of businesses need “posers” to survive and it really keeps them alive but I’ve found skaters are the one group of people who really care about the community and are defensive about their apparel and everything due to the fact that it caries significance to them like thrasher most non skaters would think thrasher was some trendy shirt without knowing about its skate origins. Supreme is another example it’s been so hyped that it turned from skatewear to hype beast fuccboi clothes. A lot of people don’t realize Supreme,Thrasher, Stussy etc. were originally skate brands. Another reason why zumiez gets a bad stigma is because it is mainly placed in malls,in a mall there is a big chance that a lot of the shoppers don’t skate and are there to buy apparel and other clothes so when they pass zumiez and they see something they like they’ll pick it up not caring about the origins thinking it’s done plain old shirt when if you go to a specific core skate shop it’s more likely that you actually skate or are looking into skating.

Great video! When I started skating in '84 there were no skate shops anywhere near me. I had to order my shoes, decks, etc. from CCS (there were others, but I stuck with what I knew worked) over the phone and wait and hope that what I ordered was right for me. In '85-ish my brother opened a skate shop which helped in every way except shoes. Stocking a worthwhile variety of styles and sizes for the customers was a losing battle for a small shop. As much as I love the fact that keeping it local, organic, real, homegrown, whatever is still a strong vibe, I can definitely get behind Zumiez because "if you think you've got it hard, back in my day..." AND even as a middle aged guy I've never been mistreated at either of my local Zumiez. In fact I always get treated very well and I notice the same treatment going out to other customers in the store, even the ones that annoy the shit out of me. There's always at least one employee who actually skates and at one of them there's a girl who's all about ancient skate artifacts/history which is badass. So, to watch skateboarding go from 'unacceptable' to 'trendy' brings some mixed feelings, but I'm so glad I don't have to get on the phone, order my shoes, read off the credit card number, wait for my stuff, hope they fit... you get it.
@Keegan_Co2 жыл бұрын
Yeah we used to do the same growing up so there's definitely some nostalgia when it comes to ccs us for me😂 but I agree with everything you said and you have a very good take on what other people seem to not see or even care for when they go to a shop so im glad you've had great experiences at both! I always recommend to support local when you can just because they need help too but at the end of the day there is nothing wrong with zumiez and they were technically once a local shop that just helped popularize skating

@antikaworu5 жыл бұрын
@@gloom5844 Well if you mean if I would recommend my deck/board it's A deck by the brand Krooked, 7 layers, it's very sturdy and it's an 8.25 wide deck/board for $54 since it's a bigger board/deck it doesn't turn as fast as decks/boards like 7.75 for tricks such as Ollie's etc. but it gives more room to land. So I personally like it better. Sometimes it's all about personal preference. Riding and turning in my opinion has more to do with wheels, trucks, and bearings tho. If you perfer doing tricks and street skating (not cruising) Smaller wheels are the way to go. If you like cruising around more then softer bigger wheels are the way to go, as for turning if you like to turn by leaning then loosen your trunks, not to much tho. If youre not to much into skating as in still starting for bearings Bones reds are the way to go Feel free to ask more questions. I didn't fully understand the question but I hope this was helpful. If I didn't answer your question correctly feel free to also correct me.

@@gloom5844 Yes, although again it's up to personal preference. Some brands I recommend for beginners are: Creature, Girl skateboarding (only the new ones the the old ones are bad), Toy machine, Baker, Fortune, Krooked, Element, DGK, etc. Also if planning to go to a Zumiez it's better to Have you're own experience, some employees don't necessarily know much about skateboards, although some do. if you plan on going to your local skateboard shop near you then Say you want a beginner deck and they're more than likely to know what they're doing but not always. For a starter I recommend this set up Grip tape: doesn't matter to much as long as it's grippy enough Deck : Personal preference Trucks : Ventures Bearings : Bones reds Wheels: Bones 100 or Bones STF Hardware: Iron Horse Hope this was more helpful

I now have a decent chunk of my own money, so hopefully soon I can get a board (complete are more expensive so buying individually would be best) This helped me a lot, I actually made a list of what I need to order♡

I would use a landyachtz as I have a longboard that is 42 inches and I cannot travel with it so I want to get a landyachtz since they are close tot the same size as a skateboard and some people allow them onto planes as a carry-on and they are fun to travel with as my sister skates and I use a longboard but I am wanting to learn how to ride a skateboard as well

Is it better to build your own or buy one of their completes? Being a female skater I here a lot about employees being rude so i really would rather not ask the price difference but Im unsure to either build it or get the one of the complete boards. I ended up getting a complete board, my Zumiez just opened up so they were very low on parts but had a few nice 8.0 complete boards so I picked one of those up

I’ve heard abt the whole poser thing and stuff but idk. sorry if u don’t understand this and for wasting ur time lol.

So I recently bought a White Fang skateboard off of amazon around 4-5 months ago around and it's been really good however it doesn't turn very well I'm new to skateboarding so I don't know if it's the board or the way my feet are positioned. My board was 60 dollars and I didn't have to customize it. (it came pre-built) I don't know if I should get a new one and customize it or if I should keep the one I have and break it in or customize it a bit. Can someone please give me advice?
@Keegan_Co3 жыл бұрын
I just made a new video about skating a board off of Amazon so if you check it out you'll probably see some of the same issues you're running into... I would 100% get new trucks, bearings, and wheels
@_ima_airplane_12383 жыл бұрын
@@Keegan_Co okay thanks!
@Mystninja4 жыл бұрын
Spend big on trucks. They last the longest. Then bearings. Then wheels and decks. Are most disposable. So spend less on them. In the beginning. If you quit in a week your trucks should last a long time in the cupboard. Bearing may need "speed cream" after a month of sitting around. I'm rocking 3 set ups. A 90s crusier (8.88 pool/bowl shape with high trucks and longboard wheels) Street set up. (7.75 popsicle. light trucks and tbh I'm running soft thin 56mm wheels). As my streets are crude. And the least used. Park set up. (8.5 popsicle) but wheel chosen is another odd one. 52mm 101a wide conical wheels. There is some math and balancing the weight and heights. And using bones bushings and bearing. Tbh reds and super reds feel the same. But super reds last longer but reds take a beating. As I was saying if the streets are sandy or cruddy. Your not wanting to but Swiss or ceramic. As a little bit of sand can scratch a raceway. And you new pro line bearings are now no longer precision.
@Keegan_Co4 жыл бұрын
Agree with all that but you really don't need to spend big on trucks independents are going to be some of the best quality and they're the same price as every other truck if you want lighter go for tensor trucks which are also the same price...my point is for a beginner you don't need $40 titanium trucks when all trucks last about the same amount of time vs. The wheels if you get bones stf or spitfire formula four wheels they will last you much longer and not get flat spots like almost every other wheel.. thats why I say the trucks and the decks don't really matter but what you're rolling on does if that makes sense 😅 again agree with everything else you said though! Good information for sure!
@Mystninja4 жыл бұрын
@@Keegan_Co Tensor are the worsted dude. I agree Indy's are good. You should be teaching kids to buy trucks to last them. Tensors are the worsted as they grind down to fast and the magnesium oxidise. I understand you have to sell products. But come on. Tensors truck are for pros and rich kids who can buy a new setup ever 3 boards. Thicke should last the longest in a set up.
@Mystninja4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I apologize. But yes Indy titanium are over rated. And titanium axles maybe lighter then steel axles. But sometimes may be weaker. I've never seen stage 11 standard. Last Indys I rode was stage 9 stds back in the 2000s but man there heavy. Tbh I say spend big on trucks. As your going to be stuck with them the longest
@Keegan_Co4 жыл бұрын
@@Mystninja ive never had any issues with tensors oxidizing also Rodney mullen is one of the founders of tensors so I trust him and Daewon song one of my all time favorite skaters skates them and he rides with only 1 bushing and has no problems with them...im just saying tensors are not bad quality at all theyre light theyre strong the slide really well and I've never had any issues besides cracking them by the king pin which I've done on other trucks...independent trucks are some of the best quality but they also are the heaviest and I'm not a huge fan of skating heavy trucks...
@Mystninja4 жыл бұрын
@@Keegan_Co each to there own. Just think almost uber light board (the foam and carbon fibre one) tensor Maglite trucks. ( Remember the elements minis bearings and there specific light weight wheels.
