On a serious note (believe it or not), the acting of Hope Summers as Clara Johnson in this episode is fantastic. The scene where she opens up to Andy about why this pickle contest means so much to her is beautiful, and one of my favorites in the whole run of the show. Very touching.

I was in this era. There was actually always a quiet competition among women who could prepare the best anything. This made Grange night the best eatin' ever.

If you visit Aunt Bee's grave in Siler City NC you will see jars of pickles at her tombstone. Fans leave them there all the time.

AG and DK used to call FB the Marlboro Man, because she was a heavy smoker. Could you imagine Aunt Bee as the Marlboro Man? It's hard to imagine. FB went from Broadway to Mayberry and it was a difficult transition. There was immense tension on that set, as FB didn't particularly care for her co-stars, or their sense of humor. She considered herself a consummate professional among amateurs.

@@Chasecka If I recall correctly at the end Barney was giving them away as a prize to passing motorists for safe driving.

@@rotunda57that was the first time she made them. Then (and I forget exactly how this went), she made her pickles for the fair, but she wouldn’t win, so they were replaced with pickles from the store. Then Clara (insert last name here) went on about how much it meant to her and her late husband to win the ribbon, so Andy and Barney figured they couldn’t have Bea win in bad faith. So they had to get rid of those pickles too, so Bea would have to make even more Kerosene Cucumbers. Those are the ones appearing at the fair.

Back in the day women did not leave house half dressed. Gloves & hats were staples. That was also the hat era for men. And handkerchiefs.....never home without ‘em.
