I like it,but I don't think I'd like ceviche.Now that I've had pickled fish,I can stand it's texture.It's cooked enough. 🤔
@simonh6371 Жыл бұрын
@@deloreswilson1798 It's firm, almost meaty in texture. slightly chewy but not at all tough. Here in the UK and rest of NW Europe i.e. Netherlands, Germany etc they are called Rollmops, sold in jars, rolled up with onion and a bit of gherkin in the centre, held together with a little wooden skewer. Soused herring is an old south English variant of this.

Yah, cranky old guy here again...I first tried pickled herring in 1957, when I was ten. It was at a family Scandinavian Christmas gathering. I ran to the bathroom and spit them out! Fast forward to adulthood and I reexamined the taste, and found I really liked pickled herring. I've been lucky enough to eat pickled herring in Sweden, with relatives. Good stuff...and creamed pickled herring might even be better.
@micahdude82352 жыл бұрын
I was a bit opposite. I instantly loved pickled herring as a kid. My dad would occasionally buy some from a mom and pops local grocery store. It was always a treat. Fast forward since I was also 8-10ish I haven’t had any cause I always thought it was called pickled herring. Well, I’m in my late 20s now and I just realized it’s always been called herring in wine sauce(which I used to think was different).

As a native expert, in your opinion is there a best way to eat them? I see videos of people eating Surstrommig who enjoy it on some sort of flat bread, with sliced raw onions.
@REXFORGT2 жыл бұрын
@Zali Becquerel I'm Norwegian but I think it's best on lefse which is the soft cousin of flatbread, with rømme (sour cream), red onion and some fresh herb like parsley or dill (optional) . Flatbread (not to be confused with knekkebrød) is best served with grilled fish (Trout, Pollock, Cod etc.) with butter and sour cream, pepper and salt and some dill sprinkled on top. Some lemon juice squeezed on top also works wonderfully. Now I'm hungry 🤤.

in the old times they used to say this was the price you had to pay if you wanted to ferment fish properly for longterm storage. Its like the fish would come alive through the glass jar, sharding it everywhere in a great exploding wrath if you forgot to salt them before they went in the jar - they gotta be atleast as salty as the sea they came from. After you opened the jar, you didn't put them in the fridge? Another rookie mistake. If you open the jar, the north sea demons awaken, they have to be cold like the fjords of norway. Big hub bro, sorry you had to go through that.

When I was in college (1978) we went on a winter ski bus trip to the Catskills. I was the ONLY one of 30 students who relished the pickled herring, creamed herring, lox, etc. on the breakfast menu. I love fish and still do. Matthew is a kindred spirit. Cilantro tastes like soap to me. But fish, any fish, is my comfort food. I could happily give up red meat if fish was available. Mackerel, bluefish, snapper, swordfish, cod, plain old "whitefish", (all either broiled or breaded), throw in calamari, and ANYTHING in a can. No coincidence, perhaps, that my ancestors were Danish.
