I'm really glad that you posted this video as I've been wondering about this issue, myself. I very much appreciate the explanation re: how picture discs are made as it clearly justifies my suspicions. Like you, I also love the Lateralus record (ALL Tool material, to be honest), but I don't even try to play it, since the first spin, as I noticed at first listen that no amount of cleaning was going to help - so I stick with the Lateralus CD. Here is my question to you: What about COLORED vinyl? I've also noticed some issues with colored discs and I have a bunch of them! I've recently bought picture / colored discs from Mastadon, Interpol, Rage Against the Machine, Tool (10,000 Days European pressing), Interpol, Fall Out Boy and Puscifer (the most disappointing as this is my favorite release from 2018). Thanks Jarrett! Mike

Best example of well made picture disc is Batushka - Litourgiya. I mean EVIL 079 LP press and it sounds as good as it looks. It's all about how it is pressed and prepared, but ofc vinyl will allways sound better as a standard black disc (especially 180 and 200g version of a disc).

I only one Thriller on picture disc. I mainly bought it to put up for one of my grandsons. I wish I'd have bought the Iron Maiden and Ozzy pic discs I was on the fence about as a teen in the 80s. The only reason I'd consider buying one is just for the looks, likely purchasing either another copy on black vinyl or another format. Not only do that not sound as good, but I'd always worry that I'd accidentally scratch up the picture. I'm really not enough of a collector as of yet to worry with picture discs though. I've passed on recent releases, simply because there was no black vinyl available as well.

When pressed right, no, they don't always suck. I own Sick and Panic by Macintosh Plus (Yes, the same woman who made Floral Shoppe!) on vinyl and it was only pressed on a clear record picture disc and is a 12 inch single that runs at 45 rpm. If it's a single that's just around 12 minutes, they didn't have to press anything on the other side. So, to have better sound quality, they reversed the artwork and put it on the other side of the record, and because it's clear, you can see the artwork and still have good sound quality. Pretty cool!

Luckily they've all been re-released on 180gram black vinyl since then and I'm slowly replacing the picture discs with those. They're so eye catching and I'd wager that just on their looks alone they have introduced a new person to the hobby, which is awesome :)

I own several picture discs; I'm a big fan of them - but only for hanging on the wall. I laugh at people who review picture discs on Amazon complaining about the sound quality. I always want to yell at them "YOU DON'T BUY PICTURE DISCS FOR THE SOUND QUALITY!!!"

I've just started with vinyls and got Keane Tear Up This Town picture disc and I had hiss in the speakers so won't be bothering with the picture discs unless there's something cheap and I'm buying as a novelty but these things aren't suitable for your favourite music.

Yeah unfortunately picture discs looks cool, but they don’t have good sound quality.

I bought yesterday a picturedisc from Michael Jackson - Thriller...and i have also the original album from 1983...i notice direct that the sound quality is not as good as the original..and this video confirmed this.

That's why i love Bandcamp. Can have it physical for collection and digital for listening. I didn't even liked using picture discs in the 90s and was buying the album always a second time as cd. :)

I have one picture disc (Françoise Hardy), on the bright side it was a gift from a friend. Song of the day: Nina Simone - You've Got to Learn ❤🎶🎵

I have a few picture discs in my collection. I have a copy of Who Are You from the 1978 that doesn't sound too bad, a Won't Get Fooled Again 12" single, the Creeping Death 12" single that isn't too bad either, the Illegal Alien picture disc single from Genesis, and one of the RSD David Bowie singles. The quality I find is fine, I just don't listen to any of them that often though. I have a Technics SL-3300 that I play my records on.

Hey Jarrett! Thanks for the awesome video as always; I'm a big Picture Disc fan no matter what: I have Master of Puppets, the Aces High and Creeping Death singles and Lateralus too! I would really love if you could do a video about those companies that press exclusive coloured limited edition reissues of big classic records, like Sound On Vinyl and Relapse Records. Thanks!

When I was a kid, you could get a premium for pic discs when swapping them with friends. I swapped a def leppard hysteria pic disc for a crappy Meatloaf normal pressing AND a Motley Crue vinyl one... (and the Crue one was their first ever 'leathur records' release... sold it for £200. Worth way more than that now! lol)

I also avoid picture discs whenever possible, I hate getting them when you order a album expecting a regular black or coloured vinyl and you get a picture disc instead. It's happened to me more than once.

Hi, is my choice for the final song of the day: Don't Get Around Much Anymore, by Harry Connick ,Jr., from his 1989 album, "When Harry Met Sally," original motion picture soundtrack. Columbia (CBS) Records.

I have a few picture discs. I do it mainly just to collect. I have Purple Rain, EWF's Raise!, And some Disney soundtracks. I do notice the sound is different. Then again I have The NuMark TTUSB and the sound isn't a big difference with regular vinyl

One of my favorite albums (Riverside's Shrine of New Generation Slaves) had a very limited original vinyl release in 2013 and no repressings, which now go for over $100. I'm really not that ready to spend that kind of money on a record, but I recently found out there will be a repressing in January. The problem with that, is the only record available is a double LP picture disc. My setup isn't that good at all, and I'm wondering if it's fine to get a picture disc if my setup is just made up of things I found at a thrift store.

I got the O Brother Where Art Thou? picture disk. I usually steer clear of picture disks but with the blue grass type of music I knew pop sounds wouldn’t bother me, in fact it only adds to that old timey feel. I can’t think of any other situation where i could be okay with it though

I think Taylor Swift’s Reputation sounds phenomenal for a picture disc. There’s some surface noise, but it doesn’t ruin the experience like Tool’s Lateralus.

For aligning the cartridge on an lp 120, do I have to use a Stevenson protractor or will Baerwald work just as good?

My problem is that it seems like a lot of picture discs don't come with the artwork or include the credits or lyrics as well. I also don't understand why they put them in a cheap plastic sleeve. I would much rather have the regular lp so I can get the complete artwork which most picture discs don't have.

Picture discs usually come in those terrible clear plastic covers that will leak vapor that sticks to the record. Pretty hard to get rid of it too. I buy vinyl to listen to so try to avoid them if I can.

I have 3 picture discs that are 200 grams each, and they sound amazing. They obviously don't have 2 thin sheets, and the picture looks great, so they can make these with good sound quality. 2 of the discs i have played over 1000 times, and they still sound great.

I only really pick up picture discs as collectibles or if they’re cheap. I’ve found that picture discs are often cheaper than the black pressings.
