Camus (from Cam uisce, meaning bend in the water) has always played an important part in the cultural development of this region.
Nearby Mountsandel is believed to be one of the settlement sites for some of the first people to arrive on the island of Ireland, while the Bann Disc, described as one of the finest examples of Irish Iron Age metalwork, and now classed as a national treasure, was discovered on the river bed just downstream. The early medieval Camus High Cross (now standing in a nearby graveyard) was the only Christian High Cross in all of County Londonderry, and an ancient Bullaun Stone, located in the Camus Old Church, was once a sacred object of pilgrimage, with the water in its hollow said to possess holy properties.
The river here is very popular with water sports enthusiasts, anglers and walkers. Look out for otters, herons, squirrels and other resident wildlife whilst enjoying a walk or a river cruise, taking in the stunning views of this beautiful stretch of water.
