After all the Philco Predicta restorations I’ve seen on YT, there must be more in operation now than when they were being sold!!😂

Not only do I love watching old tube electronics get fixed and learning more about them since I only really understand basics of amplifiers but your excitement when the tv came on and also the random cat appearances made it all the more entertaining haha! Keep up the awesome vids!

Haha yes I was pretty excited. This was my first Predicta restoration and it was a long project so I was pumped

@@televisionforever I can imagine, it seems a lot more work and time goes into a television restoration than something like a guitar amp. You do a great job showing the process and making things easy to understand

When Philco went out of business, it had a lot of Predictas in warehouses. Some of the motel chains bought them up for use in guest rooms. I recall having one set, similar to the one featured in your video, in 1968 in my room at a Holiday Inn in the midwest, perhaps in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I don't recall if it had an antenna. I have read that the antennas were removed before the sets were placed in guest rooms. (The sets were connected to an MATV or CATV system.) So, your TV most likely was not used in a motel guest room. Anyway, I thought it was a nice novelty set! Furthermore, it had a very practical feature for motel rooms. Guests could swivel the screen for best viewing from different places in the room.

I actually have a motel set as well. It doesn't have an antenna and has a "how to use" sticker on it. It's in rougher condition than this set for sure.

This model has the transformer power supply and parallel heaters. (but still uses a capacitor voltage doubler). Appears to be essentially the same chassis used in the 1960 23" console set we had. One of the selling points was "Philco Cool Chassis TV--with no parts underneath".

Excellent video, Jack! It might be a good idea to wear some vinyl gloves to insulate you from shock hazards, as well as shielding you from any lead in the solder on those old boards, as well as cadmium oxide from the metal parts of the chassis. When I was a little kid, these sets were all over the place!!
@televisionforever2 жыл бұрын
I agree haha, I need to get some of those.

@@televisionforever Much better idea to get an isolation transformer, if you don't already have one. Gloves will dull your sense of touch.

Since you watch these televisions, where do you get replacement CRTs when needed?
@televisionforever2 жыл бұрын
They are getting hard to come by, but there are a lot of sets out there that are just waiting to be found, working or not, you can find spare picture tubes in junk sets. I have a few spare 17DRP4 picture tubes in storage just in case I find another Predicta that I want to restore that has a dead or weak picture tube.

@@televisionforever I'm surprised it's still possible to get any. They're certainly not in the Radio Shack catalog!

I have always wanted a Predicta. Preferably a 17 inch model with a metal cabinet. Sadly, as with a bunch of vintage electronics, they have become "trendy" and the prices are artificially very high, so one cannot be gotten for a reasonable price unless you are really lucky.

Those horizontal bars were much closer at the top than at the bottom, so please do the vertical controls and the centering rings.

Mate, when Tubes go 'Caked' like that it means they have lost vacuum, likely while they were on too. The 'White cakeyness' inside is the oxide, the getter (The black, metallic looking area on the glass) should never be white in a healthy tube.

Where did you get your picture tube tester and your drugstore tube tester? Just do not know where to start looking. Just know eBay is not my 1st, 2nd or 3dr choice.
@televisionforever2 жыл бұрын
Keep an eye out at estate sales, antique stores, and eBay for CRT testers. The drugstore tube tester I got from a friend near me. I don't use it since they aren't very accurate.
