I actually agree with you, as brilliant as they are, I like variety. The thing is, they do provide it. They have some of the most gorgeous ballads and progressive rock songs I know of. "Epilogue", "Edge of the World", "Empty Daydream", and "Frozen Serenade" should do the trick. In a couple of these they show off their chops on acoustic guitars and piano, Miyako turns in some heart-stopping blues, and they do it all without compromising what makes them Lovebites. I urge you to check those out.

The defenders are appearing! 😂 I know you're relatively familiar with them (the band) and have been covering them for a couple of years, which is probably longer than a lot of their fans have known them. Judgement Day is an intensely personal song for Lovebites, signalling their first return after an extremely tough time for them professionally and personally, so it really is a little bit of everything.. a thank you to the fans for being patient with them and an absolute statement of intent going harder, faster, and showcasing the skills that they honed whilst away. They have a very close relationship with their fans, and for me, their 5th album could be 10 variations of twinkle twinkle little star and I would still gobble it up 😆

Some context, since you mostly focused on their lack of variation and speed: I watched their past concerts with 16-18 song setlists, and saw variations perhaps not seen with any other band, of any genre. Here's what LOVEBITES played: Heavy metal with grand piano and symphonic interludes with references to Chopin, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff, Spanish guitar, ballet-styled performances, an eight minute ballad, a long 1-minute long (and shorter examples of) Gary-More-like guitar solos, metal with strong references to Iron Maiden, Slayer, Testament, Metallica, and Dragonforce. As to vocals , the lead singer Asami (more accurately a "stage general") is a veritable coloratura soprano who can sing in five octaves like Mariah Carey, in styles ranging from operatic, Judas Priest-like, soul, hip-hop, and with her trademark vocal hold-outs that few could match. Examples of the concerts I referred to are readily available on KZbin (e.g. Five of a Kind and Ride for Vengeance).

Full agreement, Bernard. I consider those who say 'songs sound the same' of their catalogue to be 'shallow listeners' who do not really grasp the fullness and complexity of what they are hearing, what has been written & performed flawlessly that infuses so many diverse styles, often within a single song. It is difficult to comprehend without many repeat listens, with quality headphones supported by an 'air-moving' speaker-system for physical vibrations. Some just don't 'get it' especially those who listen on a phone or computer speakers, not giving their full attention, and/or immediately make a 'snap-judgement' of 'style' and cease 'paying attention' ... A band I hear mentioned as 'type' more and more is Dream Theater for the 'prog' elements. I have called "Paranoia" Classical/Thrash with a timely message. I have expressed their blending of all these style/genre and the lack of comprehension among many listeners as, those listeners 'see' (hear) one color and decide all colors are that color where LOVEBITES is more than 60 'colors/paintings' (songs) many with numerous shades (variations) within. 3 years of daily listening/watching and I continue to recognize many details of interwoven-complexity in their compositions & arrangements (

Sorry, I'm just clarifying. The concert is called "Heavy Metal Never Dies - Live in Tokyo 2021". So it's easier to find on YT, if someone is interested in watching (listening to). "Ride For Vengeance Tour 2021" is the national tour during which this concert was recorded. This is not criticism,🤗 especially since I 100% agree with what you wrote in the comment !👍

I'm not sure how familar you are with Lovebite's catalogue. It is true that most of their songs are played fast (they ARE a metal band after all), but there is a lot of variation in their catalogue. Speed Metal | Power Metal | Thrash Metal | a little Prog Metal and Symphonic Metal | Hard Rock | Ballads. There's more musical variation within and between their songs than many other metal bands have. What other band would even think of putting a Garry Moore inspired blues solo in the middle of a thrash song, or a classical guitar solo in the middle of a Power Metal song, or a classical piano piece (Chopin) at the beginning of a Metal song. How many other metal bands have a grand piano on the stage for their live concerts? I don't think it is true that fans just want them to play "Iron Maiden sped up". This fan at least wants them to write whatever the hell they want, because everthing they write is brilliant.

I think I know what you mean. The song that sounds more different in this album is “Stand and deliver”, obviously no any ballads. My guess is that in this album they really exploded, they released the energy they had accumulated during their hiatus so this time they wanted no prisoners, they exude so much stamina, musically speaking. To me this is basically a transition album, the beginning of a new era for the band. So let’s see how the future unfolds. My only concern is whether they can have the chance to tour part of the world before it collapses.

We all have varied taste in music. I like all metal, but thrash & speed are my favorites, and Lovebites delivers in spades. What Lovebites does the best within that realm, IMO, is within each song there are all sorts of variations with each instrument. In the big picture it may all sound the same to some, but once you dig there is so much going on that it's mind-blowing because it's done with such clarity and precision.

Hi mate, first of all, i have to say that i hate that condescending smile of people who thinks they know what's the best or the appropiate for the other people and they are doing it wrong... I mean, i don't want to seem disrespectful, but these girls like this fast paced music style, what's the problem? Maybe you have not listened enough stuff from them, of course they play different styles but if not, who can tell an artist how to show off his art? Go and tell ACDC not to be ACDC cause every new album sounds similar to the previous one... Or seek for a new band that plays the music you love, that's it! The thing for me is: when i don't like something, i quit and start something new, so simple. And let people be the way they want to be. Greetings from Spain and have a nice day dude 🙂

As you predicted they do have slower songs, they just don't have them on this album (the classics Swan Song, Frozen Serenade and the 3 'E' songs will no doubt get mentioned). Interestingly, Miyako, the dark-haired guitarist, who plays piano on some of those slower numbers, is releasing an EP of piano music herself, so hopefully there'll will be a variety of tempos on whatever EP or album Lovebites release, which will start with the letter K (or probably L, if 'K' is a live album) if the trend is continued. Anyway, we can see you enjoyed the song, which is the main takeaway of your reaction.

@alekhidell

“Unfortunately Lovebites have got themselves into this position where their fans want all of their songs to be this fast” Im afraid you couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. And boy, you tried. “Lovebites play fast” “ooh look, they’re playing fast…told you” If you knew anything about the history behind this track you would understand why this track, from this album is this tempo. Why the whole album is this tempo. Lovebites founding member left 18 months ago, although she actually wanted out a lot earlier than that. So a very promising band, just beginning to get noticed came to an abrupt, screeching halt. Although a couple of other events played their part (Covid, pregnancy x 2) the band was put on hold. That was a conscious and deliberate decision by the four members who had all been recruited by their former band leader, who, rather than disbanding, or hiring a session bassist, decided to use the confluence of events to their advantage. Very methodically, they planned their next moves. After only 6 months “hiatus” the band announced a worldwide audition for a new bassist. Any gender, any nationality. Many thought it a gimmick. Many were wrong. The band sifted through hundreds of applications and zeroed in on 6 bassists. The odds were always heavily in favour of a Japanese female, but they actively auditioned 2 males. One English. They decided two candidates stood out, and in August last year they auditioned both candidates for the position. Both were excellent bass players and Aya, the person not chosen, won herself a lot of admirers, myself included, for the way she conducted herself at and following the audition. But the band chose 20 year old KZbin sensation Fami for both her ridiculous talent and her bright, bubbly and joyful personality. The album was recorded…before she was chosen. So her bass lines were added at home, in two weeks. The result is the best metal album this 63 year old has ever heard. This 63 year old was never a speed metal fan, or a fan of 80’s thrash. But when Lovebites play something it takes on a whole new flavour. Every song on the album is fast paced and energetic. That is NOT to the liking of many longtime fans of the band. There seems to be a general misconception that albums “must” have a ballad. Or two. That they “Must” have variations in pace and cadence. Wrong. The only thing that you got right in your assessment was that a speed fest is what LOVEBITES wanted. Not because they believed it was going to satisfy fan demand but because it was going to satisfy THEM. They were making a statement. The Song Judgment Day is part of that statement. Asami has said that she wanted the audience to judge the new Lovebites on their merits as an out and out metal band. They don’t care, and I care even less what is EXPECTED of them. They care about making music that is demanding, that pushes them. It’s why I love the band. It’s why every album has been a technical improvement on its predecessor. This is the best group of musicians that I have ever seen and heard. They are a rare phenomenon. Talented, self effacing, fun, funny, and extremely appreciative of everyone who supports them. Those attributes are a very big part of the reason why I say “best”, because by “best” I speak of them as people, not a product. Thank you for giving them further recognition but please, treat yourself to a few days listening to their 4 album, 2 EP one single catalogue. There you will discover why Lovebites have such a passionate and dedicated fan base. And there you will find that you are wrong. Very, very wrong.

Most fans do tend to live up to the descriptive word "fan" derives from; fanatical. I think your take is pretty fair and a bit unnecessarily overstated, but understandably so given the aforementioned. It's all about what's presented to the general audience, hence your general criticism approach over what's generally spotlighted or promoted by the bands themselves. You react to/review what's being promoted by the bands on a per song basis, not trying to critique an entire catalogue. And in the case of LOVEBITES and what's been promoted by the band over the years ,your take of "generally most of their songs are this fast" is VERY fair and I absolutely love LOVEBITES: own multiple albums and multiple live concert DVDs, but it can't be argued this is generally what they promote to a general audience. On the opposite end of what you're talking about take BABYMETAL, for example - at least once upon a time pre-2018 - every new spotlighted/promoted release was different from the one before, there were similar core elements but the overall structure, tempo, feel and musical theme differed showing/promoting the variety the band had to offer on an equally great or clever scale. That's how some hardcore Metal heads got into them, they would say, "well I don't like these songs at all, but I LOVE these other songs." Band-Maid is another band that also has promotional songs that differ from album to album, it's why while I may not big fan of them overall, I am a big fan of a selection of songs from their catalogue. I have a similar relationship with a number of J-Metal/J-Rock bands. Promoting variety has it's value. Mary's Blood, who I was a BIG fan of (the band where I thought Saki showed her best guitar improvisational skills and solos IMO) they too offered up some variety in their promotional live/music videos - well, what did make it's way on to KZbin, since they didn't have the best management in the world. Their first LP alone had a little bit of everything and none of it sounded like it didn't belong on the same album or from the same band; even had a Jazz Metal track, which was not promoted. It's also why SAISEIGA is my new favorite J-Metal band, every music video and promotional song has shown a similar exceptional core element, but in a variety of ways like mentioned previously and that variety hooked me; it also helps that Regan, SAISEIGA's vocalist is currently IMO the most versatile vocalist to have been spawned by the J-Metal scene. I know those who read my comments on the subject throughout KZbin think I'm being repetitive, but honestly I feel it bears repeating. They really do need more exposure. LOVEBITES or LOVEBITES' management, however, for some reason seems to want to promote the idea that they're a very one note band - although a very exceptional one note - and if that's what's generally presented the fans really shouldn't blame a reactor/reviewer for getting that impression. Oh and, yes, I very much enjoyed this song.

Ironically, I think the latest album has the most variety of all of their output so far. Having said that, there are a few tracks that I haven't listened to as many times as others because of their similarities. If Lovebites has a problem it's that they write songs that would be killer on most other bands albums that become "filler" on their own. If they had been around in the days of just vinyl and tape they wouldn't have suffered from "side 2 syndrome". As for the expectations of fans for them to play only one style, or more often in one style, I don't think that's true at all. Find me an Iron Maiden fan that doesn't love Children of the Damned as much as Aces High. The same applies to Lovebites fans. I'm looking forward to hearing live versions of Orion as much as Soldier Stands Solitarily (which I'm aware you won't have heard yet but they will illustrate the point when you do). TLDR: You're not completely right but you're not completely wrong either (I think I just defined an opinion). 😉

Hmm... I think the critics go more in the other way. This last album have been 10 very fast songs, it is the first time I don't see a more feeling song in there, and some people has been questioning where are the "E" songs, songs more heartfelt they used to make like Edge of the World, Epilogue, Empty Daydream, etc. But it is the girls who seem to like this kind of music, miho was putting more emotion in there. Lately Miyako has been very happy telling everyone she had been training speed a lot, Midori has always loved speed (Angra, Bodom...), Haruna is also a speed lover (Helloween favorite band)... I would say they like to go high speed more than their fans, who also don't dislike it don't take me wrong xD

You make some valid points. People who have listened to, and reviewed the new album, have said it was overall a fantastic album. The only thing they criticize is that there is very little change of pace of each track, almost all are fast. There are no slow ballads on it like they have done in the past. I think one reason they didn't is because they knew fans were worried that changing a bass player may change their sound. And they had been on hiatus so long that they wanted to put something out that says, Hey we are back, as fast and as strong as ever, and we are going to keep putting out the music you love. I suspect that the NEXT album will show more variety as they will begin to include Fami's input on the songs going forward. She will bring a fresh element to the band which I am excited about.

Personally, I consider this song Lovebites best effort to date. I love the classical influence. At times I hear some Ritchie Blackmore and Rainbow influence. The sheer skill of the dueling guitars and the willingness to extend the solos into "here, hold my beer" moments bwetween them. Add in a touch of funk with Fami's alternating finger picking and slap on bass adding a bounce Lovebites have never had. But yeah, I can't do anything but agree with you on Lovebites placing themselves into a singular "style." However, if you are as good at is as they are, perhaps that is not a bad thing.

Some songs of LOVEBITES can be compared to IRON MAIDEN. But if we talk about the entire catalog of LOVEBITES songs (about 60 original songs and musical compositions), then this is a variety of genres: thrash, speed, power, progressive metal. Metal songs are complemented by classical music. In several songs of LOVEBITES elements of symphonic metal and hard rock can be heard. Judging by your YT channel, you haven't checked LOVEBITES much ( 5 songs, last time in March 2021). Maybe that's why you got that impression. P.S. This is not a criticism, this is a clarification.🤗

I will not write about the fact that there are medium-tempo songs and even slow one in the repertoire of Lovebites. I will touch only the fast ones. What you are saying is quite understandable, but I think the problem is only the inability of your perception to distinguish musical nuances at such a speed. Therefore, it seems to you that their songs are similar. It's just that Lovebites are playing too fast for you. Hence the unfortunate comparison with Dragonforce, which play just as fast, but their difference from Lovebites is that they play simple music quickly. Love bites plays complex music quickly. All their songs are as different as possible. But to understand this, you need to have great skill and considerable experience listening to music. That is, you need to have sufficient qualifications in order to properly evaluate the music of Lovebites and have fun.

Any meaningful activity requires the necessary qualifications. Listening to music is no exception. You need to make efforts and connect your head to develop the necessary skills for this.

I hope one of the new Japanese metal bands you have on your list is Saiseiga. They've only been around a couple of years but I'm really likeing what they're producing. They're still pretty small with just a few thousand subs on their channel. Definatly worth checking out. Also, not all female. Only 50% female, the singer and drummer. As far as Lovebites always being speed power metal, they do have some deep cuts that are different. They just make official vides for their fast charging forward songs. Like you said, because that's what the fans expect. They have some slower ballad'ish songs. My favorites tend to be the thrash leaning songs more than the power metal. Which again tend to not get videos. Anyways, great reaction. Glad to see you doing some Japanese music again. That tends to be most of what I listen to these days. I've just gotten bored with what I hear from western music for the most part. Although, I'm realty liking Cellar Darling which I discovered on your channel a long time ago.

It would be more correct to call LOVEBITES a heavy metal band. Their musical boundaries are much wider than just power metal and speed metal. When people refer to LOVEBITES as a power metal band, they usually only judge by their songs in that genre. Ignoring the fact that LOVEBITES in the catalog (containing about 60 original songs and musical compositions) has both thrash and progressive metal, elements of hard rock and symphonic metal, etc. Despite the fact that LOVEBITES in the catalog (containing about 60 original songs and musical compositions) has both thrash and progressive metal, there are songs with elements of hard rock and symphonic metal, etc. Often this is combined in one song. "The Hammer of Wrath", "Dancing with the Devil" , "Empty Daydream", "Set the World on Fire", "Dissonance", "The Apocalypse", "Thunder Vengeance", "Dystopia Symphony", "Break the Wall", "Raise Some" Hell", "Paranoia", "MDO", "We Are the Resurrection", "Scream for Me", "Spellbound", "Stand and Deliver (Shoot 'em Down)", "The Unbroken" и etc. P.S. In numerous interviews with various media, the ladies call themselves a heavy metal band and this is more in line with their music.. At concerts, Asami :"We are LOVEBITES. And we play heavy metal !"

@8:38 interestingly, the reason Midori so jacked is because she was preparing for (or had been in) bodybuilding "bikini fitness" competition. I don't know if she won, but looking at photos of her with the lineup in the competition, she definitely was a strong competitor. I hope she keeps doing it. Being an Amazonian warrior is very metal! ;)

This group, which for me is the best in the history of metal, does not bet only on speed. Just listen to Swan Song, Empty Daydream, Epilogue, Frozen Serenade, Edge of the world and a few others to be convinced. In any case, they are above all that has been done for technique, creativity and versatility.

this album is about to show everybody without a doubt, that they are back after a really hard time, better, stronger, faster and fitter than ever. imho they play, like they had to prove that to everybody. so they did in the most impressive way. I get what you mean and I´m sure that on the next album there will be a greater variaty of tempi again. they all, especially miyako, have already proven, how great their composition skills are. I mean, there is and has been no other band ( that comes to my mind), who has this amazing track record (about sixty songs in the backcatalgue and not even one bad, stale or mediocre one). so enjoy their tempo on this speed record and set your focus on their other achievements on this album. and imagine, how great it would be to enjoy these songs live. cheers.

One minute and thirty seconds, that's the whole video for me. Not all Lovebites songs are the same and you would know that if you reviewed more than one song a year. Bye bye.

This is a brilliant song, one of their best. They are the most exciting metal band around at the moment. I've been listening to them since their debut E.P came out. A lot of their songs are of a similar style though, probably because they're so good at writing them. Granted, some are slightly quicker, or have piano in them or an acoustic start, but, at their core, they are 'of a type' and I wish they would've been a little more adventurous with their song writing on this new one. An Alexander the Great or a Suite Sister Mary or a Keeper of the 7 Keys, a Master of Puppets would've gone down a treat. If they don't flex their composition chops soon, they'll be just giving fans the same experience over and over, which some fans will love but this can also lead to fatigue because listeners will be able to predict what the album's like before it comes out.

The band has gradually evolved from their last EP, "Glory, Glory to the World", to their latest album, "Judgement Day". There are a lot more prog and neoclassical metal elements seamlessly integrated into their music while maintaining the speed in most tracks. I believe you will find the variation you're looking for in both the aforementioned EP and LP. Try the following : "Dystopia Symphony", "Stand and Deliver (Shoot 'em Down)", "Dissonance", "My Orion", "Lost in the Garden" and "Soldier Stands Solitarily".

add "paranoia" from the "Glory ..."EP. it is like the mother of "dissonance" and shows their darker side too.

I think your biggest problem was trying to express yourself regarding your personal opinion, all in all it's obvious you see just how good they are and what to expect in the comments section. Have a listen to recommendations from the wolfpack, chill and listen to a mix with an e song thrown in once in a while and some headphones on, close your eyes and let the sound take over. 🤘🎤🎹🥁🎸🐺🇬🇧

Thank you for your rational comment. I think my biggest problem is some people will irrationally defend the thing they like, even if it isn't being attacked. Certain KZbin channels have trained the audience to expect gushing praise for everything as it gathers likes and subscribers.

@@PNW I'm the same sometimes (often), I then just stop, take a deep breath and relax and try again which usually helps me. I love the fast stuff but also the slower and more progressive ones, the e songs all of which are masterpieces in every sense are perfect for relaxation both melodically and lyrically. Keep listening and remember this is your channel, 🤘🎤🎹🥁🎸🐺🇬🇧

Agree with your criticism to a point as this whole album is frenetic. Could it be that this was to show their fans fearful that with the loss of head banger Miho they would no longer be a heavy metal band? Fears extinguished! That being said with the addition of Fami a jazz fusion, slap, and pop bass player they may change their direction slightly to accommodate her input.

Fantastics talents. Speaking to this song specifically, it sounds much better at 0.75 playback speed. Just like all new Metallica sounds much better at 1.5 playback speed, seriously. Overegging this pudding?

Good lord, where did all these people come from in the comments.... Heard a few tracks from them now on your channel. Yeah they're good and clearly talented, but as you say it's always been that sort of speed metal. Heard enough to know they're not for me

Ha, knew someone would jump on me. Hedgy asks for "what we think" on all the stuff he reviews and I comment what I think on pretty much all of them, that's how it works among us on this particular channel. I said it was good, just heard enough of them to know that I won't enjoy everything from them. Personal taste. Likewise I'm not expecting people to enjoy the artists I listen to and appreciate how talented they are. Hedgy has had the grace to feature some of them on here as well, and people have rightly commented that it wasn't their taste.

If I'm listening to a new band, yes I'd think 3 out of 60 songs is sufficient to get a flavour of what they're like. There's millions of bands out there vying for attention, if I had to listen to every song of every band to see if I like them I wouldn't be able to do anything else with my life. This whole "they've got 60 songs" is a strange boast that so many comments are making, it's almost like you're all being told to say that.

Where did all these people come from in the comments....??? Weird question . 🤔 This is YT and all these people, like you, came to see the reaction of the song of this band. Someone "jumped on you" ? I don’t see what it was expressed in (the comment or comments are not visible, they were probably deleted by someone), but judging by your first comment, you made a mistake and, as I believe, a person (or several people) wanted to convey accurate information to you. After listening to 3 songs (and most likely once?!) you made your verdict - this is a speed metal band. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if they are wrong. But that's your problem.🤗 I'm not going to convince you that you are wrong. How many people have so many opinions. You expressed your opinion, wrote a comments , other people also have the right to express their opinion about your comment. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Nothing personal, just my comment about your comments (at least those that I can see).
