Pie & Mash - Sainsbury's vs Morrisons - Who Makes it Better?

Pie and mash is one of the most popular meals in the UK along with a full english breakfast and fish and chips, but what is the difference between a Sainsbury's version and a Morrisons version? Well in this video I head inside two of the biggest UK supermarket chains to try out their steak pie and mash to see who is best!

The Sainsbury's mash looked heavy-going. I'm allergic to peas,so they'd be a no-no. Definitely think the Sainsbury's pie was better. The pastry on the Morrison's pie looked drier than Ghandi's flip-flop.

Oh dear Morrisons, what has become of your once-great pies? William Morrison must be spinning in his grave! Now, let me tell you, as you've shared with everyone in the video, the trouble with these pies lies in their hard, unyielding base. It's as if they used a brick as pastry. In my day, a good pie had a buttery, flaky crust that practically melted in your mouth. But these are like trying to chew through a piece of concrete. Mr. Morrison, I'm sure, would be heartbroken to see the state of his beloved pies today. This cannot be his legacy.

Morrisons mash with Sainsburys pie and peas would make a great combo. I've had the Morrisons meal before and it was exactly the same. Good mash, tinned peas, with a pie like concrete. I was hoping it was going to be home made, but, alas, no. The pies are left under heaty lamps to keep them warm, but those lamps also dry the product out and make it tough.

Homemade pie any day! But it's just as well it wasn't a combo of Sainsbury's mash and Morrison's pie as then your mouth would have been glued shut or you'd need about 2 litres of gravy to get it down :-)

Definitely Sainsbury’s. Don’t mind potatoes like that although not sure why the cafe that makes up the potatoes can’t just throw some knobs of butter in and some herbs. Not like they don’t have access to that stuff.

Used to get a reasonable meal in Morrisons, don’t know what’s happened tbh. I had chicken and chips few months ago, I took it back it was too dry. The lady working there said “Chicken is naturally dry”. Had me in bits laughing.

Neither! Morrisons for it's dry concerete pie Sainsbury for it's poor mash Remedy: Return the Morrisons pie and ask for a replacement Return the Sainsbury mash and ask for chips instead. Years ago I ate in the Morrisons cafeteris and loved their ometlette and chips meal. Now discontinued. hAving had one of their concrete pies in recent months I have not bought them for a while. I put it down to a bad batch. Will try again in the future and if the same will return and complain - writing to the CEO and tell him to get his act together.

I’ve only eaten once in a Morrisons, breakfast, and that was pretty good & remarkably cheap (that was in June last year). We did try to have afternoon tea in another Morrisons, much more recently September 2023), but although advertised on their usual menu posters at the entrance they said they didn’t have all the ingredients so couldn’t offer it, as we were just passing through & are unlikely to return to that town anytime soon I have no idea whether it’s ever available there. As for Sainsbury’s the one in the town where I live has never had a café/restaurant (it’s an edge of town place & I think planning permission for an in store restaurant was not granted, a condition for them getting permission at all) and another bigger store in a city a few hours away did have an in store restaurant until a couple years ago, but has since closed (I think the space is now used as some kind of storage area, it’s all boarded off, so it’s difficult to tell), it used to be OK if you were in a hurry & not too fussy, but certainly not great. Luckily there are several decent independent cafés/casual eating places in both town & city I refer to. Nearby town & city do however have in store cafés in a larger & medium size Tesco, which are just about OK, the larger is a Tesco café, the smaller is a Costa in store franchise.

I thought the pie and mash looked really good, simple English food that many up market restaurants should look at ,but I do realise it might be difficult to match the price and show a profit.With this offering what else can they do? maybe we should look at the cost of the pie in each shop off there shelves. I know 2 Morrision's steak and ale pies are £2.50, since I like this version. so spending £8.30 Sainsbury.. Vs morrisons £8 But you still have to think it is not that hard to make for far cheaper at home. even buying the more expensive tin of peas 28p and you can get mash premade for around the £1. and then a pack of two pies, which have been meat and gravy filled. that pie looks like it has been over done to make it hard. But even going and getting a farm made pie for £3 or £4 you can still easy make for cheaper If the pie did not meet standards you should have complained and asked for a replacement All the pies i have ever bought have not been at this low standard

Ah Sainsburys had it from the second I set my eyes on Morrisons. And that was before you started to describe the food. Paper cup, how the hell can a place like that run out of proper cups? Ok the gravy was better but I still would have brought that plate of food back for a refund. Great review buddy. Oh and by the way. Yes you can make it cheaper at home but sometimes it’s nice to have someone else cook and bring your food and clear up and wash up after you. That was a reasonable price.

That Morrison's shortcrust pie is from their frozen range. The Staff left it in the oven too long, it looked burnt and overdone. The peas were marrowfat you make mushy peas from. I'd give Morrison's a rest if I were you. I had their so called Best range Salmon En Croute last night. Wouldn't buy it again. At least Sainsbury's top range is good.

The hard base of the Morrisons pie leads me to believe it was heated in the microwave. The peas didn’t look too good either. The mash looked a bit better, but did need as one butter. Not really worth £8. The Sainsbury pie was really nice. OK, the peas were probably frozen but that’s fine. The mash was buttery, but a bit heavy and look to be smooth. So yeah, Sainsbury wins. But my question is the same. Is it worth £8+? I don’t think so.

The gravy and mash looked very nice at Morrisons, though a bit of butter would probably have helped a lot with the mash. Didn't care for the gravy at Sainsbury's, it looked rather watery. However... the star of the show is the pie and the Morrisons pie looked pretty horrible. I'm not saying I'd have taken my meal back, but I wouldn't have gotten pie from there ever again. I'd have to give this one to Sainsbury's. Poor Morrisons is on a losing streak.

Bloomin eck Sainsbury's gravy, weak as water( on looks) Pie,quite an air gap but still looked tasty 😊Mashed potatoes,sat to long under hot lamps and well peas is peas😊Morrisons,running out of cup's 😢not a good start. The pie looked very pale😢not crisp,underwhelming 😮The spuds seemed a bit "waxy " and defo tinned peas. There's only one winner here... And that's Sainsbury's... As their Taste The Difference Steak & Ale Pie looked delicious... As that's the most important part of this meal... Plus their Peas looked a lot better too... Their Mashed Potatoes looked dry... But they could have been saved by grabbing a couple of individual small Butter portions they hand out for Buttering Toast... Or for using with a Jacket Potato... And then mixing in the Butter to the Mash to revive those dried out Mashed Potatoes... But there was no saving the Sainsbury's weak pale Gravy... It looked bloody awful... However... Compared to the disgusting meal served by Morrisons... It was like night and day... I'm sorry to say my friend... But i would have taken the meal back for a full refund if a Pie like that had been served to me... It looked absolutely disgusting... And if anyone from Morrisons head office is watching this review... You need to refund this man his money for serving him that unbelievably disgusting Chunky Steak Pie.

Straight off that mash from Sainsbury's looked liked microwaved frozen pellets and the peas were defo nuked , gravy looked awful but the pie saved the day. Immediately Morrison's mash and gravy look miles better and the garden peas looked like they were tinned rather than nuked , the pie would have been better than Sainsbury's had it not have been left to dry out on a hot plate . If the Morrison's pie and mash had been served up correctly it was way better than Sainsbury's offering but it's all down to wages...you pay peanuts you get monkey's.

Aside from the obvious problem with the Morrisons meal I have to mention the plates. The staff in Morrisons told me the new blue swirl ones are difficult to clean. So why have they got them. White plates every time !!!

To be honest both meals looked horrible, as a Wigan lass we are called pie eaters! I know a good pie! I'm sure Morrisons used to be supplied with Poole's pies which were amazing but sadly I don't think they are anymore they were based in wigan I'm sure they have closed the factory down now.

Don’t punish yourself, eating these horrible supermarket industrial-standard junk-food meals. Try instead Aldi v Lidl pie comparisons - although may be difficult because many of their products are exactly the same, from the same factories, but in different packaging. Better still, just eat in the ‘Spoons everyday. Can’t go wrong with that. Harrogate’s ‘Spoons in the Winter Gardens is excellent.

Oh Dear the Meals you have tried in Morrisons have not been good at all, this Meat Pie looked all dried out when you cut into it, the garden peas were tinned. The Sainsburys Pie, Mash & Peas definitely much better & is the Winner!!

Hi there, it looks like the Morrisons Chunky Steak Pie was overcooked. The Beef Steak is chewy and tough to eat and the Pastry is rock solid.
