John Lewis looked much better. The marks and spencer meal looked like something you’d make at home in the oven and although the price was ok, pretty disappointing. Also, they should know what dish they are serving I think. Great video

I think at home I would knock up fish and chips with oven chips but at a restaurant it needs to be fried and I agree with you , you cannot beat a decent chippie.I am afraid I did not like the look of the M&S fish-looked like it might have been in a microwave at some point.
@davidsworld5837 Жыл бұрын
really easy to do the minty peas. just uses garden peas from a tin and add a tablespoon of any mint sauce. use the back of the fork and mush as far as you wish. all for around 32p the size of the fish may be down to price to buy at the time they buy but the chip number seems for both to be a potato shortage. there is NO diff to M&S they are peas and bet you could not tell if blindfolded test. The problem a chippy version is cheaper and i would say better. given you a far bigger chip portion...

Have had F&C from John Lewis (Oxford St). I thought very good. Mushy / crushed peas, crispy fish and chips served in a separate basket. Never had the chance of M&S. I never credit M&S for full meals - they are great for breakfast, morning tea or afternoon tea. But don’t think their kitchens seem big enough for full meals.

Makes my day whenever I see a new Everyday I'm Eating upload! And oh my goodness, fish & chips, definitely the best of British food out there! As somewhat of a connoisseur of this iconic British dish, I couldn't resist sharing my thoughts on the showdown between M&S and John Lewis... First, let's talk about John Lewis. As far as supermarket cafes go, their approach to fish & chips looks nothing short of a masterpiece. Delicately coated fish in a light, crispy batter. It just looks like perfection. It's as if each bite is a voyage to the seaside and I can practically hear the seagulls in the background! The chips look perfectly golden. It's like a potato lover's dream come true. I bet even Captain Birdseye himself would shed a tear of joy ;) Now, on to Marks & Spencer. They are a fantastic supermarket - probably my most visited. In fact, I think my entire wardrobe was purchased there! Though, I must say from my own experience their cafes are not as good as some others like Sainsburys for example. I must express my deep disappointment in Marks & Spencer's decision to oven-cook the fish rather than deep fry it. Deep frying is not just a cooking method; it's a core component of the fish & chips experience! It's practically sacrosanct! Deep frying is where the magic happens, where the alchemy of oil, batter, and fish transpires. It's what gives that signature, crispy exterior that locks in the moisture of the fish and makes it an irresistible delight. When you oven-cook the fish, it's like composing a beautiful symphony but missing the crescendo. The result may be tasty, but it's just not the same. The M&S fish and chips did look good but for me, John Lewis takes it 7 days of the week. I haven't actually eaten at a John Lewis cafe before, but I can assure you that this will change soon after watching this video! So, Marks & Spencer, if you want to truly compete in the fish & chips arena, please consider embracing the time-honored tradition of deep frying. Only then can your fish & chips truly be contenders in this epic showdown. Until then, you're leaving a core component of this cherished dish behind, and it's a disservice to the legacy of this iconic meal. Let's keep the fish & chips spirit alive people! Thanks again Everyday I am Eating for the fantastic content. Looking forward to the next one as always

Oven cooked is probably healthier for you... but if I'm treating myself to fish and chips I'm not there for a healthy meal. I'm there for fish and chips. I can eat salads at home all day long. I'll take it fried thank you very much.

I don't understand why these Supermarket cafés don't use the café as a platform to help 'sell' items available in store. ie "you can make this meal at home simply scan qi code for details".

John Lewis all the way in every department! It was served up with the chips in a basket like a Gastro pub. Well worth paying the extra for better quality. Shameful the M&S staff don't know what the Fish is? But anyway it all looied dry and uninteresting and as you say, oven cooked from their Frozen Food section. Shocking for M&S who have gone down in standard.

As someone mention both Stores ideal for quick meal when on the move. However come generally no where a proper chippy as I question how fresh are the fish portions, ie freezer to deep frier ! Presentation of both very good, guess proof in the tasting but both portions lacked that white fresh chippy fish. John Lewis although dearer wins that one. Enjoyable video as always EIE 👏

In Leeds City Centre Graveleys in what’s now called The Core shopping mall is good. Both M&S and JL offerings look like factory-produced and reheated from the freezer. You can see the melted ice still inside the fish, trapped inside by the batter.

Mean amount of chips,and yes small bitty,snibby not great Peas😢M&S,good size mug for the tea.Very small portion of tartar sauce 😢 Peas,well peas😂.I think your right about oven baked,not fried.(healthy eating?) And yes bread dust coating, not batter. Another sad portion of chips. Have to say I thought the fish looked OK Flaky, dry ( not sloppy &wet) Price wise both cheaper than a good chippy, I'd edge it to M&S. Allan&Family 😊

For me JOHN LEWIS!! I absolutely love mushy peas and I get pretty disappointed if a chip shop doesn’t have them included in a meal that’s not separate, for me it adds the moisture for the fish and chips which makes the meal softer and more flavourful.
