I’m not gonna lie, as somebody who’s getting fatigued with these biopic films based on famous musicians trend that kicked off since 2018 with Bohemian Rhapsody, I do admire this biopic on Pharrell taking a unique approach in using The Lego Movie’s animation style as well as how Universal’s been able to resurrect feature length Lego films since The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part wasn’t as critically and commercially successful as the first film and take it in a new direction to differentiate itself from The Lego Movie franchise. I think it’s for the best for future Lego films to shift away from the tone of The Lego Movie franchise considering how it was one of the contributing factors to how the last 2 Lego Movies didn’t do so well due to audience finding the meta and self-aware parody aspect not as humorous as the first film and The Lego Batman Movie and because of how the first film’s directors’ reputation has been tarnished since Phil Lord’s treatment of the animators during the production of the first Lego film, The Mitchells vs the Machines and both Spider-verse films was exposed last year. So in the future, less like The Lego Movie and more like Piece by Piece.

This movie is actually cool. I love the Lego animation style of the artist and the happy song segment is always the best part of the movie.

I read somewhere that the next Lego movie would be a reimagining/reinvention of the series, but I was not expecting this. However, I think it's a missed opportunity for Animat to say "...or am I going to be tearing this movie apart piece by piece?".
@hunterolaughlin3 ай бұрын
At this point, a reinvention is the best direction to take these new Lego movies considering the self-aware and meta comedic approach of the original series has obviously worn off with how The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part flopped 5 years ago and that comic style being Lord and Miller’s contribution and influence. Given we know how their reputation is now since the controversy of the behind the scenes production on Across the Spider-verse, it’s definitely for the best to move away from that Lord/Miller style.

If we had to wait until later in the year in order to get more consistently good animated movies, what does that say about how bad this year was for animated movies? I have made this comment before on some of Mat’s other reviews from this year, but 2024 is really giving me 2013 and 2017 vibes where there are very few actually good animated movies while the majority of them only ranged from decent to Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate (a.k.a Terrible).

0:54 Fun Fact the director of Rocketman (Dexter Fletcher) directed the last two weeks of Bohemian Rhapsody and was at one point attached to direct Bohemian Rhapsody during its development. Why did he return to direct the last two weeks of Bohemian? Because the director of 4 of the 14 X-Men movies and Superman Returns, Bryan Singer was being a major douche bag during the production of Bohemian Rhapsody. That and both movies feature the character John Reid who played by two different actors from game of thrones. Why am I mentioning it? Because those movies make a fascinating double feature.

What’s interesting between this and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” is the aftermath after 5 years since Universal’s time to play with the toys: In 2019, two toy-based animated films, including “Uglydolls” and “Playmobil: The Movie”, killed off the trend of capitalizing on the original Lego installment. From 2020 to 2023, Warner Animation Group turned their intellectual properties into successful kids’ films, such as “Scoob!”, the 2021 “Tom & Jerry” hybrid, the long-awaited “Space Jam” followup, and “DC League of Super-Pets”, with various critical results, along with cancelling “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” and “Coyote vs. Acme”. By 2023, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller faced major controversy for their toxic work ethic on “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”, along with “The Mitchells vs. the Machines”, which resulted in one of its key player, Jeff Rowe, to leave the duo to work with Seth Rogen on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” for his healthy work environment.

Considering the fact he did collaborate with Illumination to compose music 🎶 and songs 🎵 of their animated films especially the most repetitive song "Happy." Don't get me wrong, I do loved and enjoyed the song 🎵🎶🎼, it is happy, fun and gay catchy but still Illumination overused this song in their animated movies.
