For those of us old enough to remember him when he was alive, this song makes you realize how much you miss him. He should have lived so much longer. Such a pity he was taken from us so soon.

This song is so beautiful, but so sad! Really makes you reflect on your own life. His lower register, swoon. We don’t appreciate the good times till they’re gone. We each have our own beautiful puzzle.

Ohh…Elvis. This one always hurts my soul. This I feel is autobiographical to him. One of his friends said he didn’t always want to listen to his own songs but after recording this, he listened to it over and over again. Every word and inflection is felt in your soul. I was watching your face carefully because when I saw what song you were reacting to, I knew it would affect you. Anyone who travels the Elvis journey as you have,song by song learning about him. His music, his life, his ups and downs and his death know him somewhat and his struggles grab our hearts and souls by the way he sings. It’s like he bleeds when he sings.Elvis didn’t need a memoir. Just listen to his songs and one can understand where he is in his life. Seph, you didn’t disappoint my friend. He does sing this live, but it’s an audience recording & it doesn’t give you that same personal feeling as the recording where he’s not distracted. It is good though. It’s the only live performance known to this date. 😢❤❤❤

He has such a way of expressing himself that it draws you in, like being on a journey with him. Thank you for your heartfelt reaction Seph😊

Yay a 🌋 - always been one of my favourite songs and performances - Elvis using his hurt/sorry voice that you just want to give him a massive hug and tell him everything will be ok - just love it and it's a bit like he's talking about his own life and how he is feeling 👑⚡⭐💛

Oh Seph! I've been along for a good portion of your Elvis journey, have never made a comment before but now must since I have tears rolling down my face over how precious you are to my heart. I am now in my golden years and don't understand much about navigating any social media stuff but felt I just had to tell you how beautiful and special your heart and spirit are to this Elvis lover.

I don't want to fall into the trap of saying this was almost autobiographical (Charlie Rich first recorded the song) but damn. Elvis' emotion and heart, combined with the lyrics and looking back in hindsight, wow, just wow. Elvis recorded this in '75 right after he turned 40 so maybe the lyrics were more than just words on a page to him.

Such a sad, soul-wrenching recording. Just beautiful. It's one of my favorite Elvis songs; that man sure knew how to sing from the heart. In all genres, Elvis truly was the greatest of them all then and now. When Elvis sings "and the one I miss most of all is you, you know who" it's said that he was thinking of his Mom when he sang the song. Great analogy, Seph. Btw, Elvis only performed the song live once. No video of it but here's the audio: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npq3lKuQe9Oemck

I agree Seph. Brilliant song! My favourite part is right at the end when he sings to God: 'God help me find the pieces'. Epic. Your description of 'a jigsaw' in life was very, very good. You should become a philosopher or something!🥰
@balovett3 ай бұрын
A heart-wrenching tale of life's regrets. It almost sounds like this song was written for Elvis. That third verse where he sings, "Playin' the bars. Playin' like a star. Anything to get a name. Carryin' on, livin' on songs my friends wrote for me to sing." (2:56) I imagine Elvis related to this one. (1:40) "It's like you've got a jigsaw and your life is like, every day you're putting another piece of the jigsaw together. And it only fits in one way. It only goes in one place. Now, as you're fitting it all together, you're eventually seeing where your life is going because the picture starts to appear. But when you've got a relationship that goes wrong or somebody dies or if somebody leaves you, then you have to take that jigsaw piece back. And if you remove too many of them, then your life isn't going to look like what you had planned, what you had been seeing, what you've been building. It's not going to be like you imagined it would be." Oh, man, Seph. What an achingly gorgeous and crushing metaphor you have painted about how each of us fantasizes how we'd like our own lives to unfold. How we work to create that life we have imagined. And how ultimately we're disappointed by the inevitable realities which alter those plans and are forced to accept the picture in front of us. (5:33) Right here in the outro when Elvis sings, "God, help me find the pieces", you just about lose it.

One would be hard pushed for any singer to produce a more emotional performance of this song which was sung live once in July 1975. My mother deemed an attractive woman, played this many times after a doctor botched a facial operation resulting in negativity in her life, and the cutting out of her pictures in photos, even although she was very much loved until the end of her life.

I've always loved this song. If you live long enough, like me, you look back and wish you had done something different or said something different. Only now, it's too late. One thing, I really don't like the voice singing along with Elvis at times. It seems like he's drowning out Elvis and that annoys me.

The music critics of the 1970s did not like Elvis singing these types of songs. I guess it hit to close to home and they were not brave enough to admit it?
