Making a Tilt Top Tea Table Part 2 by Doucette and Wolfe Furniture Makers. In the 2nd part of Making a Piecrust and Dished Top Tea Table the video shows the making of the Birdcage Mechanism that supports the top and also allows it to turn and tilt. From there we make both of the tops which are made from extremely nice pieces of solid crotch mahogany. The tops are are shaped and hand carved from the solid and are then finished with Royal Lac which is a shellac based varnish from www.shellacfini.... Hardware for the tables is from Ball and Ball Hardware.

As a fellow hand tool woodworker, I have to say you do exquisite work!!! I love the attention to detail and the fact that so much of the process is hand craftsmanship and use a shellac finish. In a time when most are making claw and ball feet, pic crust edges, and other carved elements with a CNC, its refreshing to see a business that keeps true craftsmanship alive. So often its only the hobbyists who can afford to perfect and use the artisanal techniques. I'm SOOO glad your finding success as professionals doing the same. I wish you much continued success. Please keep the videos coming.

The chatoyance of that mahogany may just bring a tear to my eye. Beautiful. I'm guessing there's a reason we don't see the pie crust layout, carving, or the finishing process. Even though seeing it won't make us able to do it on this level, some secrecy is reasonable.

Beautiful job on both tables,there's a lot of delicate work to make these tables. The pie crust top is especially nice. That's way to much work for me to do.I hope you charge enough for these pieces,people don't realize how much work goes into a project like this.

Makes you wonder what the methods were to do the top in the day? Thinking some sort of router plane strategy. Must have taken a long time. I love your work. Jim
@DanielStarbuck
@DanielStarbuck 7 жыл бұрын
phooesnax i thought about that myself, id image maybe do all the marking out and such and maybe drill some holes an 8th or so under what your after for referencing the depth and then waste away the centre area with gouges and chisels until its near the desired depth, then flatten it off with a router plane as you said and following up with scrapers, planes etc. it amazes me when i look at work like this and imagining how it was done, just laying out and cutting out the pie crust edge alone would be nerve racking and time consuming, nevermind the work in the centre of the piece.

@ef2b
@ef2b 7 жыл бұрын
Not only is it genuine, it's a good question: The long-grain stays appear to be cross-wise to the grain of the crotch. I'll bet the screws are in slots to handle any movement. Breathtaking work, really, top to bottom, and at every step.

Why did you attach the cleats for the top accross the grain insted of with the grain. Beautiful work!
@dan__________________
@dan__________________ 7 жыл бұрын
Because the holes in the cleats for the screws are oval shaped so when the top expands it can move along the cleats. If you did it with the grain the cleats would have to move with the top and they can't because they are attached to the base.
@gregsmith1719
@gregsmith1719 7 жыл бұрын
True, but wouldn't they simply widen or narrow the wooden hinge mechanism, which has long dowel-like cylinders to ride on? I would think the movement wouldn't be more than 1/4 to 3/8 at most, and the length of the hinge pins would allow that easily. No? Or are you concerned about the top warping across grain, thus the need of the cleats across grain? Excellent work!

@dsfs17987
@dsfs17987 7 жыл бұрын
like getting something from ikea? :)) this is about craftsmanship, not production on a cnc router, and even with cnc it takes quite a bit of time to get the shapes in the cad model "feel" right, not something that was done by math - and skilled master does it by hand to nearly perfect symmetry, and the subtle asymmetry is what makes these pieces so pleasing to look at, you know there are some, but you can't really see it the "math" in cad/cam/cnc production can be seen on todays cars, body panel shapes are perfect and at the same time lifeless, might be ok for a piece of metal, but not for custom furniture, that's my opinion anyway
