This man is astonishing…this is EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR IN MY MIND. His capability to look at it at a bigger picture and understand it within himself is astonishing.

This might just be the single most important video on Platonic Philosophy / Jungian Psychology. It is like a theory of everything. Everyone needs to rewatch it multiple times to grasp the entire scope of it. I am in awe

Mr Grimes speaks like a true adept here, revealing the supposed secrets of the inner work methodology in full. Amazing, I truly wish these were available 10 years ago would have saved me much time, time which is the highest treasure of the alchemist pursuing the great work.

this is exceptional ... beautifully explained and clearly demonstrates the debt that Jung owes to Plato ... helps me to understand the links between ancient Hermetic teachings and “modern” Jungian/Alchemical Psychology ... the moment where he brings the whole “thing” into focus on the imagination and dreams is one of those, well, “moments”. Look at his face . . . Also, the history and purpose of “Universities” is particularly enlightening ... Thanks so much for this video.

This incredible talk offers the final, most essential observation regarding the demise of our civillization in the hands of dogma. In hope the once rich wisdom that shaped and formed the western culture will rise from the ashes and real acadmies will flourish

It's interesting that Jung says we realize the anima caporialis through dreams. That's actual Platonism, as opposed to neoplatonism whick drops the emphasis on dreams altogether.

Great Dialogues of Plato translated by WHD Rouse is the version of the Republic he is reading from in case it helps anyone. The Liber Platonis Quartorum may have been written by Jung but the Platonic tetralogies were defined by Thrasyllus, astrologer of Emperor Tiberius.

The Platonist school was still in exist in Europe prior to the 1500's. The School existed for centuries in Constantinople until the mid-1400's. Constantinople is in Europe.

Jung's ideas are closer to those from some Gnostic texts, and Gnosticism, which is secondary to Platonism, Neo-Pythagoreanism, Orphism and Abrahamicism, appeared before the Hermetic texts. Practical Alchemy is in many ways really based on conventionally "hermetic" principles and ideas about the world, the processes taking place in it and the nature of things, but they are applied precisely in the "kingdom of metals and minerals" - and these principles appeared before hermeticism. Hermeticism as a syncretic teaching is not synonymous with Alchemy. All these processes can be observed by any person in a real vessel, if everything is done properly. And this is the hardest part.

Pierre is way too ahead of his time. Ignorance is blossoming at this era. I’m not sure why divinity would place him on Earth now. People are not ready for his wisdom.

Plotinus himself was around when Rome was on the verge of decline. From the Bhagavad Gita, 4.7: "Whenever there is a decline in righteousness and an increase in unrighteousness, O Arjuna, at that time I manifest Myself on earth."

Jung's concept is interesting, but it has little in common with real Alchemy, since practical Alchemy implies real work in a real laboratory, which must go along with inner work - and this inner work, in turn, has little to do with psychology in any form. Jung only used quasi-"alchemical" plots, images and symbols in order to illustrate his ideas and his concept, nothing more. But this is quite understandable, because by that time many already perceived Alchemy as esoteric Christianity, Christian mysticism with peculiar exercises of the mind, or as an analogue of the so-called "clever doing" in the spirit of hesychasm, but this is not Alchemy.

It is more. And Greek Philosophy offers enormous clues to it. For example in Thales we are told that he believed that the gods were in matter. You can read the description in Aristotle‘s De Anima. For Plato the Gods were principle (ideas). Jung is pointing out that we project the contents of the unconscious onto matter and phenomenon in the world. And Jung was saying that this projecting of the psychic content onto matter was what was happening with alchemy. Jung provides a psychological parallel without the metallurgy obviously.

You mean that dying without dying and walking with the gods isn't a metaphor for repressed emotions or something?

I think you need to read more Jung. I promise the man had no misunderstandings about what “real Alchemy” was. It’s more likely that you misunderstand Jung than it is that Jung misunderstood Alchemy.

Does anyone know of lectures or works that I can find that emphasize the spiritual side of Aristotle, as Grimes emphasizes in Plato?

Aristotle was Plato's failed student whom really seemed to miss all the spiritual side you are looking for. Aristotle is to blame for the secularism and sterilization of Plato's legacy in my opinion.

To understand Christianity, it is almost a requirement to understand Plato. More specifically, that which Plato refers to as The One. I also think the divided line is referring to the ratio known as Phi; the ratio that exists everywhere in nature as if it were the breadcrumbs we should follow to find that which needs no eyes to see and was made without hands.

@@sheep9944 No. You misunderstand. When I speak of Alchemy, I speak of the unified conception of it held by those like Trithemius, Agrippa, and Paracelsus... Who saw the material/practical expression as reflective of the interior expression, and that true Alchemy cannot be achieved without the two united holistically. Lab work and inner work are not separate from each other. Without one, the other surely fails.

@@ignotus_amicus Jung's particular genius and insight was to make the connection between the alchemical works, which were heavily documented, and his own theories of the transcendent function, or the psyche's projection of its imaginal power onto their experiments as examples of archetypal imagination. The alchemists were not aware of the unconscious, nor of the power of their own imaginations. Much like the Spanish Conquistadors' fantastical belief of El Dorado. The pursuit was emblematic of their own minds rather than an actual scientific pursuit. Ironically, these largely artistic forays laid the foundations for the scientific process.
