Actually "Mama" isn't what made EXO popular. When EXO debuted the whole concept for the group was a pretty hard sell for the mainstream pubic and people literally called them "SM's first failure." This whole song and the fact that they were a group who was made up of both Korean and Chinese members that produced two different versions of all of their songs, in both Korean and Mandarin, and the Chinese group was specifically created to promote in China, etc. had a lot of people questioning how the group would ever work. People literally thought Lee SooMan -- the founder of SM Entertaiment -- had lost his touch. SM is the company that founded the Kpop industry as we know it today, and the company has created some of the most popular groups, but many thought EXO was the first time SM had made a misstep. A lot of people thought the whole concept of EXO's "Mama" MV and the sound and style of the song was too crazy. EXO didn't fit the traditional Kpop style people were used to. This song and MV were way ahead of its time when it was released more than 11 years ago, and it took a while for people to embrace what SM was trying to do. This was actually nothing like what anyone was doing at the time. EXO didn't really gain popularity until 2013 when they released their song "Growl."

This is true. SM did not jump on any bandwagon. No one was doing this . This is a concept from the mind of LSM. He was not trying to get popular. He was creating a whole new concept and the majority had never heard anything like that before and actually hated it and called EXO SM’s first failure. LSM had this dream of EXO for years and didn’t listen to the reactions. He moved by his own concept and created the greatest group that was, is and will ever be. Understand They were not copying anything from the western world or anywhere . EXO is mainly a RnB group and they amazingly soulful. Genius.

When EXO came out with this as their official debut, it wasn't really well received for kpop standards. People were calling them SM's first "flop" group because they had some of the biggest groups under their label. They didn't gain popularity until they released "Growl", so it's safe to say this type of music, though common in the west, was very new in kpop, and now I think it's a EXO "cult" classic lol

The thing that captured my attention was the meaning of the song. Whilst most other debut songs focused on youthfulness, love/puppy love (cute themed, girl/boy power themed), they chose to sing about how world and humanity is decaying and in need of 'His highness (Mama)'s attention. I just mentioned it in another comment... the whole music industry worldwide was doing a gregorian choir thing back then... there were so many different choir groups covering popular pop songs, rock songs, chart hits and so on. It was a major thing back then - and record companies were making tons of money with remixes of songs like that. So I bet SM thought they could try that in kpop too and in a way they succeeded because it was a new sound for the kpop industry. And - jumping on a bandwagon - is nothing bad, so don't take that as a critique... the whole kpop industry jumped on the "rapping" bandwagon (That goes from 2NE1 to Blackpink to Exo and to XG and Stray Kids) ... and it is really good they did because it added a really good style and variation to already good music.

@@NeonReactionsPierre you're correct. in fact most of kpop is heavily influenced by trends in western music so it's not farfetched to say they jumped the bandwagon in this case - it brought this style and sound to kpop. so it worked out in the end. the differences is they made it their own style, they added in sounds and production tools that you don't really hear in western music. it's what makes kpop, well, kpop.

I don't know if you noticed that one of them - Xiumin has ice power and in the killing voice video when the first snow song came on he spun arount with his finger in the air as if to use his powers and make it snow. I love that they still use the power concept 10+ years later

I love this declaration of intent! From the very start, there was no compromise, here was a group ready and able to lead. Even at this point you can see all the talent that has been developing even further ever since. This was never a group of pretty boys for young girls as boys groups are often thought to be in the west. Even the lyrics are not romantic clichès. Also, I'm not sure that Gregorian style chants or vocal choirs were popular in Asia, I don't remember hearing it in any other Kpop or Jpop groups of the time, though I could easily have missed it. I do remember it all over the European and American charts at the time, but not in Asia, but I get your point: music is not limited by boarders. In order to really see the full story you actually have to also watch the EXO-M version of "Mama." The whole point of both the EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) versions of their songs and each MV is to introduce you to EXO's concept and storyline. If you only watch EXO-K, you only see half the story. "Mama" is like the first episode of EXO's drama -- it sets up everything to come in the rest of the series. And if you miss any part of the first episode you will forever be lost when it comes to the rest of EXO's story. (Plus, it would be interesting to see what you think about the song in Mandarin. The Mandarin version has a different feel to it because it features EXO-M's voices.) If you watch both versions of their "Mama" MV, you might be able to understand more about EXO's mission and everything they have been sent to Earth to do. Because in the EXO-K version the whole story focuses on the 6 K members, but in the M version it will show you the other 6 M members and explain their powers and each of their roles in the story. You only see small clips of the M members in the Korean version. But in the Chinese version the story continues, and the EXO-M members are the ones that are highlighted. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary. The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. SM Entertainment has all of EXO's release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance, and some of their MVs are even specifically released on days when we have had an eclipse or other planetary phenomenon. In Korean Mama is a term they use to address a leader or king or queen. It's a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family, and especially the head of the royal family or leader, "Mama." So, in this song, they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do?" etc. As you can see, if you want to understand EXO's story, it's very important that you pay attention to the introduction story in "Mama" because it is literally setting up EXO's storyline. The narrator is telling you EXO's whole origin story, about how EXO have been split up into two groups EXO-K and EXO-M and they are part of the same group and yet separate -- part of two worlds that come together as one, etc. (EXO's two groups aren't good vs. evil, but separate groups with different vantage points and demographics that work together.) And he is telling you about how the Tree of Life has been split in half to protect it from falling into the evil Red Forces' control -- each half of the tree representing one half of EXO (EXO-K and EXO-M) -- and EXO's mission is to find the two halves of the tree and reunite them to restore peace in the world. In the EXO-K version of "Mama" the members are using their powers to search for and meet up with the EXO-M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M members. For example, you see Kai using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members. And, because Xiumin is a member of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth, they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world -- which is explained more in their individual Pathcode teaser videos as part of their "Call Me Baby" comeback promotions -- and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do. When you see the members all together in their "Mama" MVs they are together because they are still on Planet Exo where they are still united. But when you see them separated this is when they have all been sent to Earth. They keep flashing back and forth between present moments and recent past moments. So, how I interpret the story is that at the end they aren't back together yet, but that is a scene from when they were still on Planet Exo as they are preparing to be sent to Earth. The two worlds the narrator talks about in the introduction could possibly be different dimensions, so you often see parts of their story in their MVs and other content, which could be interpreted as them being in different dimensions or time periods or different moments in history. Each of the members in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M, so part of what you were seeing in this MV was them showing you which EXO-K member corresponded with which EXO-M member. For example, Suho (EXO-K) with the power of water corresponds with Xiumin (EXO-M) who has the power of frost/ice. Chanyeol (EXO-K) with the power of fire is Kris' (EXO-M) counterpart because he has the power of flight, and as you will see when you watch the EXO-M MV, Chanyeol has the power of the phoenix and Kris has the power of the dragon, which both animal spirits have fire elements and flight so they connect. D.O. (EXO-K) with the power of force is connected to Chen (EXO-M) with the power of thunder/lightning. And Sehun (EXO-K), who has the power of wind, is connected to Tao (EXO-M) who controls time. Baekhyun (K) with the power of light is connected to Lay (M) with the power of healing; and Kai (K) with teleportation is linked to Luhan (M) with the power of telekinesis, etc. That's how they maintain their bond even as members of separate groups. Also, the symbols you saw represent each of the members and it has to do with each of their powers. For instance, Kai's symbol is a pyramid and it represents teleportation, and Lay's symbol is a unicorn and it represents his power of healing, etc. (In future MVs and other things to do with EXO, when you see things like a pyramid, you know that is a reference to something to do with Kai, etc.) Even the most minute of details in EXO's content has something to do with their origin story and EXO's storyline. During that screamo part, the "tattoos" on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO members names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story. (All of the words on Kai's face and body are in English, so, if you pause that section and really look, you will see there is a whole story even in his body paint, etc. ) And although it looks like Kai is the one that does the really high note at that moment, the voice you are hearing is actually Baekhyun. Each member in EXO-K also has a partner in EXO-M that fills the same role in their respective group. For example, Baekhyun is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; D.O. is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M, (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.) In order to understand the story even more, you should also look up the English translation of the lyrics. The majority of the gregorian chant is in English: "Shoot anonymous, anonymous; Heartless, mindless; No one who care about me ... Careless, careless (Mama: Mama in Korean means Your Majesty); Shoot anonymous, anonymous (Mama); Heartless, mindless (Mama); No one who care about me (Mama)." If you pay attention to what the whole song is about, it will give you even more insight into why EXO have been sent to Earth and what their mission is all about. EXO's storyline begins with them being sent to Earth to try and heal the world and to stop and prevent the Red Force from taking over and corrupting everything. And the story in the lyrics of "Mama" foreshadows what they will have to overcome and understand about humans and our world to accomplish their tasks. In this song EXO kind of takes humanity to task and asks us to explain why we would allow all this anger and hatred to cloud everything around us and why we don't love each other more? It's really a very beautiful message and the more you learn about EXO the more interesting the whole thing becomes. In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all these evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as war, hatred and the destruction of the environment, etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace. EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-fi and part based on reality, which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days, and everything since then and everything yet to come, it all is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun's and Kai's parts in SM Entertainment's supergroup SuperM, all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. It's all been designed to connect to EXO's storyline.

To dive that deep into the lore one would have to be a die hard fan and I don't feel like going beyond the good music that I hear. As I said the music is great but the lore is just too much to follow in the little time I have for the group - if you understand what I mean.

The fact that they are able to produce a song in more than one language and still keep true to the style and sound of the song, is truly worth checking out. As a person who seems to enjoy the elements that come together to create a song, I think it would be interesting to see what you think about what makes the two versions different and yet the same. Plus, just so you know, I don't necessarily post my comments just for you to read because I know you're not really into following the storyline, but other viewers may read my comments and find them helpful. I actually post comments for anyone who might happen to stumble across my comment and might want to know a little more about the group.

@@NeonReactionsPierre Oh I forgot to mention, for example, if you only watch the Korean version of their pre-debut song "What is Love" you miss out of hearing Chen and Luhan's beautiful voices, because they only sing in the Mandarin version, and if you don't watch the Mandarin version of "Miracles in December" you never will hear what the song sounds like with different singers because D.O sings the Korea version, but Luhan takes over D.O.'s part in the Mandarin version, etc. Their songs aren't just in different languages, but the members have different roles in each version so it adds a new element to the song every time.

I know what you mean, and thank you for all the comments you have posted so far. I always read them and am impressed of the depth that some of the lore elements go to. I know you are also doing so for the others to read and I like that a lot. You have given me and others more information on everything than I could have even imagined existed in the first place. Thank you so much for that. I am a person who loves a good story - as you can see by my bookshelf - but I also have to be somewhat connected to the characters of the story. I got connected to the storyline of the Stray Kids because I could feel them in a way that I saw myself somewhere in the "search for yourself" "get out of the social machine" "be yourself" dystopian theme... that was right up my alley. But apart from that I just want to enjoy the songs, listen to new songs, take them apart, talk about them and not always look for the next detail of the storyline. In the end of watching the Stray Kids storyline videos I caught myself not really concentrating on the music anymore because I was searching for all the details of the lore in the video. I will definitely keep on watching the Exo videos, they are good singers and their music is good too - up to now and I don't think that will change. Being a musician and a singer myself it is always great to hear other musicians do their thing. I'll take a look into the other version of Mama and of course other Exo MVs. I might not understand them all but that is ok. If I really like something I will ask. Its nice to have you here and actually have a conversation. Always happy to read your comments.

I love MAMA. It's a great debut for EXO-K. You should watch the EXO-M version debut, too. For the first 2-5 years of EXO, there are Korean and Mandarin versions of pretty much all their videos. It's a bit weird to watch the videos back to back, but fun also. Like the dance break in middle of MAMA isn't just EXO-K. It's the best dancers of both EXO-K and EXO-M. Notice when there's 6 and when there's 12.

You should watch their predebut single ‘What is Love.’ It starts with D.O. speaking “Girl, I can’t explain what I feel” in a deep husky voice followed by singing “ooh- yeah. my baby, baby, baby, baby. Yeah.” At that point you know some classic EXO R&B is coming!

It's also good to be aware that EXO had two pre-debut songs before mama. History and What is Love? One is a group vibe showcasing full group vocal/rap/performance and the other is EXO's vocal line. EXO debut was 2012 with 12 members originally. Current is 9 members. After the pre-debut songs, I would then check out Miracles in December, Overdose, and Growl MV's.....then Wolf live, Unfair/acoustic medley, and Promise Live.

They have 2 pre-debut songs, What is Love and History. Mama was their debut and got in to hiatus for over a year, so their 1st album was in 2013. Most of their songs have chinese versions, even Obsession. EXO-K main vocals are D.O and Baekhyun while EXO-M are Chen and former member Luhan. After the 3 Chinese members left the group, they're combined to one group, EXO. In their almost 12 year career, like half of it they were on hiatus. Their songs were on Korean, Chinese and Japanese but they didn't have an English song. Though they sang in native song in countries they went to, like a spanish song Sabor A Mi in Mexico. D.O has an english and spanish song in his 1st album.

The 12 legends (12 members of EXO) divided in two (EXO-K and EXO-M). This is the EXO-K version so it's in Korean and only features the six EXO-K members (Baekhyun, Kyungsoo, Chanyeol, Sehun, Kai and Suho) singing/rapping although the six EXO-M members also appear. I'd recommend listening to EXO-M version of the songs you react to but those tend to get strikes on YT. Today the group is nine members* - all six EXO-K members plus Chen, Xiumin and Lay from EXO-M. Lay is the only Chinese member left; both Chen (Jongdae) and Xiumin (Minseok) are Korean. All nine were in the acoustic medley. Kai and Lay were missing from the Killing Voice (military and China, respectively). Kyungsoo, Xiumin and Lay were missing from Obsession (again, military, military and China) which is the MV where you get the good vs evil with each member having their evil doppleganger. *Lay isn't an active member (last appeared on their 2021 album, last promoted in... 2017?) so don't expect to see him in their newer work. He's done very well as a solo artist in China so maybe consider checking out that work!

EXO's MAMA, their debut song, initially released in Korean & Mandarin versions, is not just a feel-good song but has a lot of depth to it. It's a type of song that not all Kpop groups would choose let alone debut with. It also showcased what EXO is capable of. For me, MAMA is one of the best debut tracks in Kpop. I understand what you mean by chorus being popular but I don't remember it being a thing since the late 2nd generation of kpop, that's part of the reason why Mama wasn't so well received cause audience expected something like What is Love and History (Exo's predebut songs). Tbh choir wasn't even much famous in Asia. It was more famous in America and Europe that too in 90s and 2000s. I do remember Linkin Park, Evanescence, Green Day and few others going through same theme. I remember listeing to all of that until I got tired 😂 I do wish you that you'll check out Mama's lyrics, it was too ahead of its time.

Hello!!! i started from Electric Kiss and watch all their MVs and performances and listen to all songs in every version hahahahaa to prove they were not good and I was really finding any small bad thing too but in the end after hearing them live performing hahaha - none can change my mind they are good! i like how they use their vocals and harmonized to each other!

their debut kickstarted concepts in kpop. before it was either cute girl groups with the occasional different ones, and for boy groups they were "flower boybands" where they'd be cutesy-ish and the rapping was more like talking. there were a few boy groups that had different sounds like block b and b.a.p (block b debuted in 2011 with a few underground rappers [if it were up to me i would actually say block b kickstarted proper rapping in kpop] and b.a.p debuted just a few months before exo with an alien concept) but nothing was elaborate like their concept. after that they've been trendsetters in kpop since 2012. just about every trend that became popular in kpop since their debut was from their doing. they're considered like the kings in asia. while not my favourite group anymore, i greatly respect them as artists. their artistry is unlike anything else. what boggles me is they promoted this song for like an entire year and a half or something because sm didn't give them new content, i know it was over a year, and i have seen just about every performance they did of this song, and yet i am still not sick of it in the slightest. that's the power of exo.

@@maslolz oh yes they for sure brought a more hiphop sound to the scene. idk why i forgot that when both gd and top were underground rappers too. 😣 in fact they were the group that got me into kpop back in 2008 lol. i personally don't feel it really took off until black b debuted because there were very few groups with a proper rapper. that being said, gd and top were indeed very influential for other 3rd and 4th gen rappers! i remember gd getting an award for being one of the most influential celebrities under 30 or something along those lines.

there debut was in other level.. as you see they were 12 and after that three of the Chinese members left the group (Kris,Luhan and Tao) and Lay Zhang is the only one how stayed with them However, since 2016, he has no longer participated in the band’s activities much due to political problems between China and Korea. However, he is still a member of the band and has not left it. he's also a solo artist you can go and check out his solos like Lit, Honey, sheep and more of his songs

good vs evil is not the main concept- that one was maily seen in obsession which was EXO vs X - EXO , in the starting of mama the redforce mentioned is the antogonist you can say, and that red force made clones of EXO (which is the evil counterpart XEXO) to fight them, the fight u can see in obsession. who do you think won that fight though? The 12 divided in 2 is EXO-K 6 members and EXO-M 6 members. the first album was totally divided and no common song withh all members was there "The legends shall now see the same sky but shall stand on different ground, shall stand on the same ground but shall see different skies." Its how both subunits were promoting on different lands which is korea and china. all good no evil.....unless (well idk the lore is too deep)

I was never an EXO fan (i just never really clicked with their music) but this one song has always been one of my fave kpop songs of all time. Probably beacause i love opera/choral x symphonic/orchestral rock crossovers. their vocals are also undeniable. The choir monastery like music in pop songs was not popular in Korean music back then so was something new to the Korean music scene. They may have adapted the idea from western music. You will find out the more you dive deep in to kpop that EXO and other groups have western music producers at times.

I've been into kpop since 2016, I know about western producers for other groups. I am just diving into the boy groups for the last two months.... Before hat I only listened to girl groups and even today it is 80% girl groups... And I did say that it was a thing in the music industry - I meant western music with that.... and that it was new in kpop - and therefore SM seemed to have thought they can also make some money with that if they introduce it to kpop...

The evil vs good was only the concept of Obsession. The whole story is that they are from exoplanet and came to earth to save it from all evils and cruels. EXO was used to be 12 members. 6 in EXO-K (Korean subunit) and EXO-M (Mondrian subunit) and the storyline is like they were 12 powers who now are separated and trapped into two parallel worlds. You could see them were able to see each other (the other 6 in the parallel world) through the mirrors. In this mv they are talking to their lord MAMA and showing their frustration about all things happening on the earth. After they came to the earth, they were chased by Red Force which is the evil and got separated. In some mvs you can see them trying to escape and find each other because their powers should be united to defeat Red force. Also because one of them have the power of time, the mvs do not follow the timeline and you go back and forth in the time. In Power mv, Red force has all their powers stolen from them and in Lucky One it made replica of each but the evil version because they only could be destroyed by their own replica with the same power. So in Obsession they have to fight with their evil version. In some mvs like Kokobop and Love Me Right you can see them are drugged by red force and don’t know where they are. What makes it more interesting is that they always portray the details like there is a spy among them and you don’t know to whom you can trust. And there are always many eyes and cameras who watch them and all those red lighted cameras are Red force. The story is not limited to their mvs but all their releases even their concerts follow it.

Just listen to any album of the various gregorian choirs that covered all hits and popular chart songs between 2000 and 2015 .... There were remixes of hundred of big hits in the western industry... There was even a live concert show tour named "Night of the proms" where pop rock songs were accompanied by a live orchestra and a choir and they also had lots of elements like this in them. Exo /SM brought it into kpop because it was totally new there. And it was a cool choice. Around 2008 I was co-leading a choir part-time and we were completely acapella and had songs like Umbrella (Rhianna), Apologize (Timabaland), Bleeding Love (Leona Lewis) and a mashup of the songs Wanted, Livin on a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name (Bon Jovi). Choirs mixed with pop and rock were the thing back then...
