EDIT: For the 4+ Stars, we're talking about 0,4% not 4% I misspoke. So 16-35 0,44% and 14mm close to 2,5%. The rest is spoken about correctly. Goooood Morning! A nice way to think is this: if you are going to document, bring your zooms. If you want to be creative, bring your primes. If you are not sure, bring your zooms. If you need to be light, bring a single prime (a cheap one, also). If someone is paying you a lot, bring zooms and primes.

if you have a controlled scenario obviously you want to use a PRIME, but If you dont know what you are shooting -Run and Gun bring a Zoom Landscape - 24-70 Street or City - 16-35 but what's better getting many 3 or 4 star shots or a couple 5s? I think the 20mm is the most underrated. I like that focal point, wide but not too wide

Nice analysis, very interesting! Another cool "retrospective" video idea could be to go back to those 4+ stars photos and analyze what make them good to you, what did it take to make those shots happen, compare them to similar shots that you ended up rejecting, etc.

Look at metadata for focal length! You used a 16-35 more, but at what focal length? I’ve done that and found on a 24-70 I tend to use both extreme ends of the range. On a 70-200, I mostly use 200.
@Kai-P

Second that and also which aperture was used. Might the 20-70 be better for some use cases than the 24-70+16-35?

Yes great investigation. I do that one on a regular basis to check what range I shoot the most at and if I really need a new lens... :)

Very impressive data collection and analysis! After watching this I would love to know how many of the 40K with the 16-35mm were taken with which focal length!? Thank you and Merry Christmas

Pierre, what I find interesting is that the 14mm lens is what you share the least of on your channel, yet you seem to use it the most. I guess for other reasons (client work etc.) Perhaps you can do more street photography using that lens. Love your channel.

Hi Pierre, I've never seen an analysis like this before. I like a Focal Length of 18mm, 40mm, 50mm. I really enjoyed watching this video and the difference in results with different Focal lengths. Thank you very much for sharing this video. 😊

Great video - I have restricted myself to small primes, 35mm, 50mm and 90mm. I need a wide lens and am currently looking at the Sony 20mm.

Started with 16-35GM, sold it due to soft corners and bad IQ at 35mm. Now I always hike with the 50mm f/1.2 & 20mm f/1.8 on 50 Stack & 61 MP. The extra MP on the 20G unleashes the full potential of the sensor & the stack on f/1.2 combined with CF-A is the fastest high res body on earth. Do I sometimes miss my 16-35GM? Yes, when I feel weak…but then at the end of the day when I look at how straight the lines are in the corners and how vivid the colors are…I never miss it

So you claim the 16-35 is soft at 35, so instead of buying a 35mm, you bought a 50. So is the lens the issue or your choice of lens? I have the 16-35 GMii and not one image is soft through its focal range

I despise the 35mm focal length. I was always punching into 52.5mm at 21MP on the A1 with it. The only thing I miss is 16-19mm, but the 20G is lightweight and enables me to deploy the 50GM. If Sony made a 35 f/1.2 native with full AF-C support and Quad XD-Linear motors, then I might try that focal length again, but as it stands 20G & 50 1.2 GM is the best two lens hiking around setup for ultimate IQ. I totally understand where Pierre is coming from with the 14GM and its quality, but the inability to accept a frontal Cir-PL screw filter makes it too niché to deploy in run & gun situations. That is why I go with 20G over it and pair it with the 50 1.2 for details

You're referring to the ratios of 4+ stars right? I absolutely did make the mistake when speaking aloud, the graph is correct. Thank you for highlighting, surprised we missed this! I'll add that in the top comment.

The chart at 14:48 kind of blew my mind. The 16-35 is showing 25k photos taken and 93 as 4+ stars. I consider 4 and 5 stars as keepers, so only having 100 out of 25k would mean I am doing something wrong with my photography process.
@patrickhowland2
@patrickhowland2 2 күн бұрын
you consider 4-5 stars keepers but he said he considers 2 stars a keeper...you just filter your photos differently. I'm sure he has thousands of photos at 2 stars but was mostly interested in which lenses gave him the most "WOW" images.
