The reason that there is no restrictions on a person with felony convictions, to run for president, is to avoid the ability for a candidates opposing party to use their power, while in office, to convict the candidate on trumped up charges, as a way to eliminate them from being able to run. The idea is that the electorate is who has the power to decide if the candidate is worthy of the office and they are trusted to have the good judgment not to elect true criminals. They take their cue from trump. Trump truthed about prosecuting and jailing all his political enemies and those who fail to support him, from the media all the way to donors, just a few days ago. As a European I can tell you that kind of behavior here would have you arrested. Freedom of speech doesn’t entail freedom of systematically apologizing for crimes, encouraging crimes and openly planning for the subversion of democracy. Stricter rules here. I guess it’s because we have first hand experience of how quickly we can go from incendiary speech all the way up to world war and tens of millions deaths that we have learned to be more prevention oriented. Same as gun violence: children have to die because grown up men want to cream in their pants shooting war weapons. We put children and people’s safety first. I sincerely hope that Kamala doesn’t just win but sets the country on a saner course. I remember the incredible enthusiasm here in Europe when Obama was elected. It seemed like the dawn of a new era of global fairness, freedom, peace and prosperity. Instead 8 years of Obama birthed Trump.
