You know Piers will censor my comment. The crew wanted to abort the dive, it wasn't milliseconds, they all knew that if they weren't pulled out, they'd be toast. So they'd hear the crush noises and then at 4000 long tons per square meter, the carbon fiber tube just snapped like a plastic pipe. But they knew the vessel had safety issues and were dodging stress tests, just like boiler tests. They knew it was a problem but why did they do it? Crazy.

Yes it’s sad but he’s insulting everyone saying we live in quiet desperation.. and these tourists are heroes.. It’s incredibly sad but the poor boy was dragged down there.. and that’s horrific.. The owner said safety was overrated and not his concern.. so he was arrogant..

The Titanic didn’t take 5 more lives the Titanic was minding it’s own business. Ocean gate took 5 lives. I cannot believe people were allowed to pay for an experimental trip in a vessel that had not been approved for this type of journey. I feel for the families. So was the Titanic. Pride took the Titanic down. The designer's first mistake was to send out a ship that wasn't complete. Not enough lifeboats. Second was insisting on the high speed of the ship to a captain that was too cowardly to stand up to it, putting the lives of the passengers at risk and the dumbest thing was testing God. No difference between the Titanic and the submersible.

What that guy said at the end is EXACTLY the worst thing you could ever say in his position. The owner of the company chartered a dive on the only uncertified vessel to attempt a Titanic dive, and was gambling with people's lives rather than testing enough unmanned to get it certified. He said 'last unexplored frontiers" yet his friend did the dive successfully 37 times and thoroughly explored it safely on every other vessel. James Cameron was interviewed today on this tragedy. He explained many aspects that interviewers have not addressed ie the material used in the construction. Cameron is an expert on these vehicles, their construction and proper use. Stockton decided that he knew better than all the experts, ignored their warnings ( even from his own people) that have made these submersibles and have made numerous dives to the Titanic without loss of life. Sadly, it was a disaster waiting to happen.
@CheloPerales

Paul-Henri Nargeolet, the French deep sea explorer and Titanic expert was known as "Mr. Titanic" because of his expertise. He died. Out of respect for him alone, Cameron should be silent today. At least today. He talks about being arrogant, not learning the lesson of the Titanic. Let's think of the January 1988 Space Shuttle Challenger. Whose fault was then? We are not God. Cameron is responding as if sitting on a higher infallible chair, "- I told you so". Geesh. Let's hope that never ever anything tragic happens to him.

Of course like many of us, I can only speculate but I've been around a handful of toxic people and we never know. Edit: I wanted to add, his father could have also been narcissistic enough to want to suck up to one of the other billionaires that were going and other wealthy and connected people who weren't going as well, so he "needed" his son to be "strong" and go with him so the son makes the father look even "better" to these other people he wanted to impress. I don't think the son wanted to go at all. He had a bad feeling about it, he begged not to go, but being forced to ' please' his father and be a ' son' to be proud of, an essential eastern known cultural expectation that we have in our family too, meant he had to put his father's pleasure before his anxiety in going.

Over these last few days, every time I tried to imagine them alive down there, it brought tears to my eyes. You knew it was hopeless, and you knew if they were alive it had to be the most terrifying, lost, alone, horrifying, agonizing thing anyone could ever experience. Two freakin miles down, under water, trapped inside a tiny vessel, helpless, knowing you are going to die. Then the physical suffering that would entail - it’s just too much to imagine. Thank God it was an implosion, and God bless their souls. 🙏🏻

I agree. Hagan is caught up in emotion and edification of these men--which is fine---but he's completely dismissive of the safety concerns that Stockton Rush overlooked or failed to mitigate. It's bullsh*t. I feel for this guy because he lost his friends, and his quoting TR was inspiring, but he is not being realistic. He just sounds like a romantic who thinks it is cruel and unfair to utter any criticisms of "a great adventurer". Well, there are five dead people because of corner cutting, and that should be included in this epitaph. The deep ocean is, as Hagan himself said, a final frontier and an incredibly dangerous place. It is not the place to take unnecessary risks.

While you absolutely have the right, people have to understand WHEN to ask these kinds of questions. Five people just lost their lives and this is NOT the time to be battering both their character and the decisions they've made. There will undoubtedly be a large investigation done by people much smarter than you and me I can't IMAGINE the pain this man is going through knowing his two close friends are more than likely dead and reading all these insensitive and rude comments people are posting everywhere. He was just trying to defend his friends... like I'm sure most of us would do. Whether he is right or wrong in doing so isn't very important right now Also.. while the 19 year old young man passing away is obviously unbelievably tragic he is exactly that. A MAN. He can certainly make his own decisions and decide whether he wants to go with his father or not on this adventure. I don't like this narrative people are pushing that he was "Forced". That's clearly not what was said (in the interviews I watched)

According to his aunt, Suleman (the 19-year-old) only ended up going aboard because the trip fell over Father's Day weekend and he was eager to please his dad, who was passionate about the lore of the Titanic. Apparently he "wasn't very up for it" and felt "terrified" about the trip to explore the wreckage of the Titanic! 😢

I salute this man for his loyalty to his friends, but from what I've been reading and hearing, the material from which the hull was created was an experimental one. A steel or titanium structure would have been much more forgiving of any tiny imperfection. This one just cracked apart and imploded. It's wonderful to be brave enough to want to explore our world and beyond, but you don't put people, or yourself, in a structure which was never tested for sustainability over multiple missions. That's hubris.

I completely 100% agree with you, but this exact submersible was used eight or more times with stockton and others in the past. It definitely was clearly Not made well enough though since these poor people, particularly the teen who was Terrified but was forced by this father to go anyway.
@cielant

@@itsjustme8554 Only that ''it had been successful before, though''-argument doesn't make no sense here. The damage to the vessel was incremental due to it's Carbon-Composite-Material for the hull which turns out to be inept for deep sea diving. Every time you submerge the submersible into the abyss the Carbon-composite hull ''collects'' a little more damage incrementally until it breaks on some occasion.

@@itsjustme8554there have been a few people who dived in it successfully have already spoken out , more or less saying that although they are here to tell the story there were times they didn't think they would be. One guy said he felt in danger throughout the experience and at one point there was an issue which took thirty minutes to resolve, during which he was telling himself, this is it, this is how it ends for me. He said he was just grateful to get back to the surface. Obviously quite a few people have aired their concerns about health and safety with this particular vessel, but they mustn't have been heeded. So sad

After all of those successful exploration attempts, this one had to be the one on course to impending doom. When it's your time to go I guess. Very said and completely avoidable loss of lives, the greed and negligence of this company caused this.

The 19 year old had more sense than his dad. Shame on his dad for risking his son’s life for his own desires. I have great sympathy for this man who lost his dear friends and for all the families. This didn’t need to happen. It was an avoidable tragedy. If Stockton and PH, the great explorers, wanted to visit the titanic, that’s their own prerogative, but they took civilians with them in the interest of money, one of them being a teenager. It’s a damn shame.
@akkorsem477

Okay, the civilians were rich billionaires who could make decisions and had this kind of experience with extreme situations. On the other hand, the fact that a child was allowed there is not only very sick, but I also don't understand how it can be legal. There are often well over 20 age limits for such things. Minimum 21 but usually higher.
