Titanic director James Cameron: submarine warnings were ignored

Movie director and submersible maker James Cameron said on Thursday he wishes he had sounded the alarm earlier about the submersible Titan that imploded on an expedition to the Titanic wreckage, saying he had found the hull design risky.
All five aboard the vessel were killed.
Cameron became a deep-sea explorer in the 1990s while researching and making his Oscar-winning blockbuster "Titanic," and is part owner of Triton Submarines, which makes submersibles for research and tourism.
He is part of the small and close-knit submersible community, or Manned Underwater Vehicle (MUV) industry. When he heard, as many in the industry had shared, that OceanGate Inc was making a deep-sea submersible with a composite carbon fiber and titanium hull, Cameron said he was skeptical.

The likely cause is a flaw in the join between the steel dome and the carbon fiber body. The material expansions are very different between them when under pressure. a high pressure steel or aluminium cylinder expands under pressure and contracts when released. Carbon fiber does not expand or contract in the same conditions. A seal would need to be included in the design and would need to be monitored or renewed as a high priority. Cameron quoted "contiguous material/steel avoids the problem". Carbon fiber is high tensile with low impact strength an is not weldable. I doubt NASA would recommend the join knowing the hull would experience 800,000 pounds/150tons per square foot at 4000mtrs at 400 atmospheres. Submarine hulls are not pressure tested, however designed to specs known to be successful with materials that expand & contract at the same rate. To test the Titan, a pressure vessel large enough to house the titan would be required and cycle testing essential to be confident the innovation of a composite material hull has the integrity. Possibly an exact scale model of the titan composite hull only, could be easily cycle tested to 6000-8000psi say twice daily, in what is known and widely used by cylinder manufacturers, as a water jacket test unit for proof of design and could potentially identify the failure in the case of the Titan. The Titan was designed to be positively buoyant, avoiding the need for ballast to allow the vessel to surface. Additional ballast equipment adds to the risk of failure. I think this inbuilt buoyancy is why Rush believed his sub was fail proof. Note full carbon fiber high pressure cylinders (4500psi) are a highly successful innovation for strength, longevity and light weight, donned by firefighters globally and a preferred product.

As a carbon fibre composites engineer in the Aerospace industry, when I heard that this submersible had a composite hull and was operating at the depths and pressures it did, I was astonished at the lack of safety and certification being employed here.

I watched the video on here of how they made the Hull, they would the hull from filament then stuck the steel flanges on with a socket joint to each end then bolted the rear dome and the front access to it. I am an engineer in HVAC but have done many different jobs over the years, I was surprised at the method chosen. Mr cameron then added the question of repetitive dive stress and the lack of certification. It was an experimental craft but I think they took it too low. It is a sad day and condolences to all those who lost loved ones and those left behind who now have to deal with the aftermath.

I've seen multiple carbon fiber mountain bikes fail on the trail, including my own; one was a friend's brand new Specialized replacement frame, he finished building it the night before. SpaceX lost a rocket and payload on the pad because of an unanticipated failure mode of the carbon fiber helium tank. I get nervous about carbon fiber airliners, but at least there's a lot of smart people and money on those projects.

I've seen this sentiment elsewhere on KZbin and I have to say I disagree. Titanic was a tragedy yes, Pearl Harbor was a tragedy also. 9/11 was a tragedy, Hiroshima was a tragedy as well. All of those places are tourist attractions now. If people stopped exploring the Titanic today, that's not going to stop them from using submersibles tomorrow, there are other places worth diving to under the ocean. The moral of this story isn't 'leave the Titanic alone' the moral of this story is 'dont cut corners when building subaquatic vehicles'.

I am a naval architect and also a technical diver. I agree 100% that wound carbon fiber was not the best idea. The fatigue, water ingress and delamination is the exact issue I was telling my wife. Dissimilar materials with water under 5500+psi pushing in-between the fibers is a recipe for disaster.

Carbon fiber under tension tends to straighten out the fibers, retaining its strength, but under compression (as in a submersible) it is the opposite: any delamination by water ingress would immediately provide an offset load path in the fibers and therefore a buckling site, with catastrophic consequences. Carbon fiber may well be a great material for pressure vessels that have a high internal pressure and therefore high tension forces, but this emphatically does not translate to a good material for vessels under high external pressure, such as deep sea submersibles.

I respect Cameron even more after this. "It was right on the sea floor below it's last known position. Which is the first place you look in a search, is the last known position. You don't go running all over the whole landscape with planes, trains and automobiles "searching"." My thoughts exactly when all this started. Someone with the coast guard saying they are scouring a 400 square mile area. Knowing damn well if something went wrong with the sub it would have sunk in the approximate location of it's last known location.

@@apergiel There is no issue with the coast guard members doing what they are told. The issue is waiting 4 days to actually get a deep sea crew to look in the area they were last seen. Spending millions scouring the ocean surface was ridiculous and should have been step 2, 3 or 4. Not step one. I get it though. Procedure and protocol for the coast guard is to sweep "x" number of square miles by the conventional means they use. They just should have better protocol for a deep sea vessel and they should have had that deployed day one. Since once it was deployed it took them less than 3 hours to find the vessel or parts of it.

@@mrjones422 you seem to not understand the big picture of this whole event! They didn't wait for days to get a crew out there to check the Titanic it took them four days to get the ROV out there that's as fast as it could get there. And no checking the surface should be absolutely step one because it's the only step they could actually do and this ship if it had some sort of anomaly and tried to come up which it sounds like they tried to do would be bobbing around on the surface somewhere. The coastguard simply did the only thing it could actually do and the reality is they can't go into it assuming that the sub is gone they have to assume that it's still functional until it is proven 100% that it's not and that's exactly what they did.
@mrjones422
@mrjones422 11 ай бұрын
@@deannelson9565 I do understand that they should have prioritized getting the ROV immediately as opposed to wasting four days. If indeed it takes 4 days to get there then it wasn't mobilized for a couple days at the earliest if the ship that deploys the ROV got there 4 days later. It shines a light on how poorly that launching their ROV actually is. I get that scouring the surface is protocol for any missing vessel but given what was known about losing coms and signal a catastrophic implosion was most likely. Making the urgency of getting the ROV even a higher priority. However that would make it a recovery effort as opposed to a rescue operation. Meaning that the scouring of the surface could/should still take place "WHILE" the ROV is in route. As rescue is priority over recovery. Point being that getting the ROV launched immediately on day one was not done and should have been. My assumption is someone with the coast guard had two days thinking they would find them floating in the search radius and didn't launch the ROV for that window thinking it would be more costly when the opposite ended up being true.

Good point. The Abyss (1989) is perhaps the most overlooked of all Cameron’s movies (released between Aliens and T-2), yet possibly the most gruelling in terms of the work that went into making it (described by Cameron as the "worst production he was ever involved with”). Many of the scenes are astonishing considering the technology of the time (lack of CGI), the craftsmanship that went into production and the sheer amount of the movie that was actually shot underwater. The story is probably not the strongest part, but the final finished product, from a film-making perspective, is quite remarkable. If you enjoy the subject of deepwater exploration, The Abyss is a must-see.

One thing that REALLY worries me about this whole thing is OceanGates’s CEO stating on their website that “regulation is behind innovation” and that they circumvented regulations by classifying it as an experimental dive vehicle. Absolutely astounding that we still have people claiming that regulations are harming innovation. Safety is supposed to be boring. Malfunctions are supposed to be an inconvenience, not a life threatening situation. Safety is supposed to be reassuringly dull and routine. If you have a failure then it should be routine to get you to safety. Sounds like this company had no idea of the materials they were using and James is clearly an absolute expert in his field. I think they couldn't search on top of the titanic right away. Ocean Gate didn't bring an extra sub, and it took time to bring an ROV that could search to that depth. To me it sounds more like the company wasn't prepared for any emergency involving the sub. The ROV had to be flown to St John NFLD and loaded on to a ship, and the ship had to be made ready to set sail. In the meantime, other ships, including the USCG, CCGS, and RCN were on scene as fast as they could, and the RCAF launched sonar tracking planes. These were good if the sub was bobbing on the surface, but they weren't6 much help in pinpointing something on the bottom.

They "figured it out" or to be more accurate, they confirmed the catastrophic failure when the nearest available ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) was able to reach the site. Which would indicate that one of the main lessons to learned from this is to always have an ROV on the support vessel of any manned submersible expedition to carry out an immediate search and rescue mission; because if they'd had one with them we would have known what had happened within 3-4 hours. Drop the sensationalist conspiracy theory nonsense and accept the rational explanation, it's simply that mistakes were made and lessons need to be learned.

James brought a lot to the point here and as an engineer knowing about cycle fatigue and stuff like that I was impressed by how deep he dived in such things. He really knows what he is talking about. I asked myself very often, why there was no noise heard from a catastrophic hull failure because any other info about loss of com and loss of tracking spoke the same lenguage to me as to James. Even far away operating sonars should have recognized this and the time of incident was well known to check those datas. Just under the perspective that the implosion was heard it is not understandable why the Hercs and Poseidon an many other assets were surface searching. As mentioned, as I heard from 2 systems failing the same moment being fully unconnected the sad truth was clear to me. And yes, I wondered why the search wasn't priorized nearby the place of loss of com and tracking.

I agree completely. My only speculation on why the search unfolded as it did was that there was no ROV submersible near the Titanic site, until Thursday. Because they couldn't check the sea bottom yet, they searched the ocean surface, to look for any possible floating debris that may have survived an implosion. At this point, any evidence at all would be deemed important to an investigation. I suspect they will try to find and extract what remains of the OceanGate submersible, so that the investigation into the cause of the disaster might learn precisely what happened at that point in time when communication was lost with the submersible.

@trevorbyrne4668
@trevorbyrne4668 11 ай бұрын
They started looking there as soon as they could. They didn't have the ROVs until the day the debris was found. There are hardly any such submersibles that can dive so deep anywhere in the world. They scrambled two of them, one from a French ship that just happened to be relatively close (even then a few days away). So they searched that area as soon as was possible. The only question is why the sound of what turned out to be the implosion wasn't made public. The coastguard et al have said that the sound wasn't conclusive. They had other sounds to deal with which were also inconclusive, but which might have led to something - like the supposedly regular knocking sounds. There was a possible sub-like shape spotted on the ocean surface, too. They couldn't at the start investigate the spot of what turned out to be the implosion as they had no ROVs. So I guess they didn't want to talk publicly about something they couldn't investigate one way or the other til the ROVs arrived... I dunno. But I wouldn't go making a conspiracy out of it, or go criticizing the search and rescue effort. That was pretty heroic, especially given the speed of it, and the international element. People truly tried to save them. (And the Titan itself was a farce - it should never have been in the ocean.)

I felt just as bad with everyone talking about hope, and even asking for body recovery later. The ignorance brought a tear to my eye. My condolences to the families that are now smaller because of this.

Saying "you don't got all around searching since it's right there where it went down" he's not right. There are two basic options: (1) It imploded or was damaged and sunk to the ground or (2) it came up to the surface again. In the first scenario, without the related rescue gear, there is nothing you can do. And there was no related gear in place, it just had to be brought there, which given the distances easily takes a couple of days in minimu. And most probebly also with the right gear on the scene there is nothing you can do. In the second scenario, you still run against time to find the sub as they can not get out of the sub from the inside, so they still are living on the oxygen they have inside the sub. But there at least, if it's on the surface, you have a chance to locate it and start a rescue operation. Bottomline: It was absolutely correct to do a wide area search from the beginning. And as we know, the moment the french sub arrived on the scene, they directly search on the wreck and it didn't took long and they found the debris.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. At the precise moment comms was lost, the locator beacon was also lost. Both these events coincided EXACTLY to the moment listening stations worldwide record a large explosion underwater. Although it was an implosion, that is in effect a reverse explosion and evidence that a catastrophe had occurred. From the data available, they would have know how close to the sea floor the sub was when this happened and from known tidal drift they could calculate exactly how far from the implosion site the debris would travel on its way to the bottom. That is the science, but of course you being an expert on these things can prove somebody like Cameron wrong. By the way, really proud of your achievement when you descended to the bottom of the Marianas Trench alone in a submersible and strangely managed to return safely to the surface because you knew what you were doing - unlike these people.
@MA-oj8zk
@MA-oj8zk 11 ай бұрын
@@Mikeandlucy1 First, the information, an implosion was heard, was not available immediately. Second, the possible implosion was not heard all around the world as you state but was picked up by a navy sub ocean hydrophonic sensor network. Third: Locator. There was no such thing as a locator on the sub. The sub while diving on defined intervalls was reporting its depth. That's it. And finally: How do you know the drift under water from the surface? The answer is: You don't. With all the false information you spread, you shouldn't call them science but rather imagination.

Respect for you Mr Cameron, you were a movie-maker who became involved in this field. But unlike others, you took the time to learn and understand everything about deep manned underwater diving. Went from being one of the best Movie Makers to a leading expert in this field. Thank you for straight forward answers. Too bad, Rush with his greed and ego had to take four others with him to their deaths.

I think it was the fibreglass body that did it, that sub should have been made solely of titanium like the sub James went in. That fibreglass shell was too thin, it was supposed to be 7in thick - the now dead CEO wanted the sub built quickly and so it was only 5in thick. If the sub had been accredited this would never have happened as it would t have been down there in the first place. Also the port hole material was specified for up-to 1500m not 3500m and the manufacturers warned the CEO about this but he ignored it.

Yet glory and greed sadly prevailed. OceanGate's expeditions to the Titanic are so ironic. It's not only about going to see the wreckage, but understand the story of what went wrong, and get an opportunity to learn from these mistakes. OceanGate delivered an authentic Titanic experience.

I appreciate him but it's a little hypocritical of him to say that the rescuers should have told the public they heard something on sonar. THey didnt for the same reason he didnt talk about what he knew. There might be a 0.01% chance those people were alive so you still got to look and it will do no one any good to hear all that. still respect to him. went from driving a truck to going to the deepest crevacies no earth.

James Cameron dropped out of engineering at University and is a successful movie director. He is not some truck driver. No offense to truck drivers of course. He didn't have to say anything but the people who took the sub there had a duty of care to their CEO and his passengers and should have let the coast guard know. It's not the same to expect him to have said something. He is not involved in Oceangate

Similar to to SpaceX Falcon 9 that burst into flames on the launchpad in 2016 due to O2 ingress into the carbon fiber tank walls. But that wasn't subject to such high pressures. Also carbon fiber has high tensile strenghth, using it in compressive stress will shift the load more on to the epoxy resin (I would expect).

One issue with what Cameron said. He said that within a few hours, it was clear that the submersible had imploded and the rescuers were wasting their time. In a sense, that is true. However, until an ROV could arrive and locate the wreckage, a surface search was important. Nobody was certain what happened. The US Navy said they expected an implosion based on the event they monitored, but they were not certain. Planners had to prepare for a number of scenarios until the wreck was located.
