Hello from Trinidad. To the dear lady who tried and failed and to everyone else up north please understand pigeon peas grown in its environment grows to be at least 10 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter. One plant can feed a household. We love it. Please learn a little more before giving up. Go to covigne pigeon peas festival to be enlightened.

So sorry that they never bear any peas. I would suggest that you give some space like 2 feet apart instead of them close together and plant them in full sun. Try it and let me know. Good luck!

They are not an annual but a perennial. If you live in a northern climate that can’t support them as a perennial then you need a northern adapted aka non daylight sensitive variety. Furthermore as others have stated they need lots of sun, need to be planted further apart, don’t cut down the ones that are doing well, and, despite their drought tolerance, need water to achieve the 12 ft or 3 m needed to flower. They need about 9 months to flower and produce a pound or so of peas so yields for time spent might not be as good as annuals in some locations. For other locations where legumes are hard to grow, aka zone 9 and 10, the yields and biomass are a plus not a minus.

Your peas has too much high trees around it that is y it grew so tall searching for the sunlight. Plant pigeon peas January and i bet you would get for the Christmas harvest. I have planted some yesterday and January also. I'll come back to let you know my results. Thanks for sharing

I had one pigeon pea bush, the first season/spring that was devastated by the grasshoppers but it did end up having some flowers and peas later in the year. The following spring a lot less grasshoppers so I had lots of flowers and peas but then it just randomly died mid summer. Good thing for me is that I have another one growing due to a dropped seed. I have a neighbor that grew several of these bushes and a similar outcome. A couple seasons of lots of peas and then they all just died. I'm in zone 10a of Florida. So I'm not sure if this is their life cycle or too much water or not enough?

Hamm…I’m in Houston and in about April/May to October plant grown 8 feet tall 5/6 feet wide and tons of flower. First time growing from seed. May be try again next April. Last year winter was really bad. It needs lot of sun and heat. Don’t plant in shade at all.

They need full sun . And they can’t survive cold weather. I plant them every summer in South Carolina and they do just fine. You probably need variety that I have. I have some that start producing in 3-5 months. Some varieties of pigeon peas takes 6+ months to produce

None of them seemed to get any real sun. Any videos I've seen of success with pigeon peas showed them in mostly sunny or full sun. My own experiment growing pigeon peas will begin tomorrow in SWFL in full sun. The seeds just arrived today.

There may be things you can do to weatherproof them for colder climates in its tolerance. For example, you may have needed to prune it similarly to how one would prune raspberry canes. A plant is designed to live and go to seed. biologically. If you meet the plant's needs, it will perform its function. There may be things you could do differently.

I’m on zone 8B nw Florida and I just started some. I was figuring it was too cold here but I’m going to grow mine around an oak and south of a forest I’m hoping will be a windbreak from the cold. Maybe I should just grow them in pots after seeing this. I was hoping to supplement chicken feed with it.

Bad weather pruning or weeding around the plants while they are in pre or full flower will prevent them from producing peas regardless matter how healthy they look.

There must be all types of varieties it maybe just finding the one for your area because Ive heard different recommendations about how they like cooler temps and good draining soil, can tolerate drought, etc...the only problems i had was controlling the white flies...i grew them in Puerto Rico in half and full sun, clay soil and loose dirt with alot of broken down leaves and moisture and in both cases had good yields.

9b Florida. Space Coast/ wetlands You would atleast have to top and protect it for winter. I keep mine mobile. And bundle cover anything stationary. Pigeon pea is temperamental here. It responds to seasonal changes; even Florida's seemly lack of seasons(natives know different), mild temperatures variations and light cycles are enough. There are very few set it & forget it perineal crops that yield in Florida, it is the worst place to attempt without creating an ecosystem/ symbiotic micro climate. As for production. I haven't the slightest clue why it wouldn't at least bloom, other than seed sourcing. They set flowers constantly and produce an abundance of pods multiple times a year. Buckets of beans. Personally; calling it waste is kinda irresponsible. Your info is critical, and setting an example has never been this neccessary. Chop n drop, nitrogen supplementation, soil microbiome, free mulch & shade are all very useful; especially considering the availability of these tools... IS going to get very weird. Definitely try again. Pigeon pea is not rumor or trick, it changed my outlook on sustainability.
