I am from the Caribbean and this is a staple to eat and grow. I live in the US and I am trying to grow some here. I got a "Northern Adapted" variety because I have cold winters, so not sure how it will work... I have a question though, can I trim them so they do not grow that tall?
@SeedtoLife
@SeedtoLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for sharing! Pigeon peas don't handle cold that well. In late fall as the temperature starts dropping, they pod stop maturing. Eventually in winter, the leaves also die. But they may come back again next season. I moved my raised bed but still some stumps from last year are there and I see one of them is growing back now. If the weather doesn’t change much in your region, then they may keep producing throughout the year. Yes, it is a very good idea to keep pruning the branches especially in the first 3 months. I was not sure when the blooms will appear so pruned them only twice. This year still finding the right spot for new plants, but if I grow them again, I’ll make sure to keep the height low.

Hello Ma'am, I have a quick question, what kind of a cultivar (determinant or indeterminate) did you use?
@SeedtoLife
@SeedtoLife 9 ай бұрын
I started them from grocery store beans so didn't know the cultivar when I started. But this one was slow maturing, perennial , with bicolored flowers. I don't think that pigeon peas have indeterminate varieties.

Hi, thanks for sharing! There is a dwarf variety that originated in Florida. So, I believe Jamaica may have those types of plants since it is closer to Florida.
@Africa1000
@Africa1000 4 ай бұрын
@@SeedtoLife No. Many of the crops now in Jamaica such as ackee okra, yam, rice, black eyed beans etc came directly from west Africa during the transatlantic trade. These foods are totally indigenous to Africa and some were introduced to America, NOT the other way round!

@SeedtoLife
@SeedtoLife Жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm not familiar with the weather in Paris but it looks like winters are not very bad. You can start the seeds in early spring. It looks like you can start seeds now. In winter, you can cut back the plants and protect them with mulch or burlap. If you don't get freeze then they will come back in spring.

Thanks for reaching out! I'm in Dallas, Texas (Zone 8a). I started seeds in March. and then planted them in the ground after about 6-8 weeks. The first harvest was in October. Beans get ready in late fall. You can start seedlings indoors in late winter. Great that you are planning to grow them. Very easy beans to grow. This video is also on pigeon peas. It shows how I planted them in the ground. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp66onxmqqtoocU Happy Gardening!

Hi, that's great! Don't worry about the temperature. They are heat tolerant and grow fast during summer. They are not at all demanding and grow pretty tall. Try to keep pruning them frequently unless you want them tall. As I have mentioned in the video, the growing period is long, so you will see the beans in fall as the temperature starts cooling down. Good luck to you! I hope you get a big harvest.

First of all thank you very much for the feedback and suggestions! It is an honor to be called as farmer and I have a huge respect for farmers but I'm not a farmer. I'm just a home gardener currently living in America. I grow plants in my small backyard organically. I'm sharing my experience and research in English because that way it is reaching to more people. I understand that unfortunately, not enough information is available to our small farmers. Farmers need a lot more and different information. I would be happy to find the information or people who can help them if they can't do it on their own. I have plans to make videos in Hindi as well if there is an interest. I understand many people don't speak and understand English that well but not all farmers understand Hindi. I try to use simple words. Sometimes it is hard to find simple words for the information that I share. I'll try harder to make it easier going forward. Thank you again for watching the videos and your feedback!

Hi, thanks for reaching out. As Florida doesn't get bad winter, I think it is okay to start them anytime. They usually produce in fall but it takes 4-6 months for them to start producing. If you start them in March , then by fall you would be able to harvest them. If the weather cooperates then you can grow them as perennials. I hope this helps. Happy Gardening!
