Join the SG Shooting team for a day Pigeon Decoying on an old Maize Stubble that has been drilled into Barley. Scouted this field a few times and although there was a lot of food on the top no sign of Woodpigeons. However the preceding day while Ferreting a nearby field we spotted 100's of woodies dropping in so the plan was set to come back and have a day decoying. In the end we had a super day's Pigeon Shooting and a final pick-up of 185 head.....no fancy decoys.....just started the day with 12 old shells, the magnet, the flapper and 5 dead birds from the freezer.
Thanks to Hull Cartridge for their superb Hull Supafast Pigeon cartridges. Thanks also to Sam from SG Shooting for setting up the day for us, Sam is Deerhunter Clothing Field tester and used the opportunity to put more Deerhunter product to the test.

There's something of the John Virgo in the commentary! And the sport is equally exciting. Great stuff!

One day they will com good. I've shot Pigeons for 40 years and it's the first time I've done well in the autumn on Maize. Just back in now from shooting geese on the same field and Sam has stayed back to shoot Rooks so that field has produced well for us.

Thanks David, appreciate that. Glad the pup is coming on well. Wee will do our best but Sam dropped the GoPro in the Solway 3 weeks back so struggling at the moment just using a video camera and that's not ideal.

All that shooting and no ear defenders, you're gonna be a pair of deaf old coots not too long in the future! Good shooting though.

I did one on our old KZbin account but I can't import it. Why don't I do them now? Well I have friends like Simon Whitehead at Pakefield Ferrets who lives just down the road from me who produces decent stuff so I don't stand on his toes. I actually gave my Ferrets away last month as I no longer have time to work them as we are flat out shooting over winter as we lease 3 Pheasant Shoots plus we have our wildfowling and Pigeon Shooting. February we are wildfowling every day we can and then March it's the best of the Pigeons on the OSR. We now tend to kill all our rabbits after dark with the Night Vision.

They were coming for a look because they were feeding there already. I would have taken the magnet in and arranged the pattern with a big landing area because of the wind. Too many birds were spooked by the magnet and not decoying which made they shooting more difficult than it could have been and the bag would have been bigger. Good video though, some challenging shots well taken.

Well, yes, of course they were feeding there already that is why we scout, we scout so we set up where the Pigeons want to be. We'd watched that field for about 3 weeks and very little had touched it until 3 days before we shot it when a small lead in started. The day before we shot it about 500 were using it. It's a field we obviously know well with two strong flightlines and favoured feeding area. We set up on the flightline right where the birds were feeing and where we know they want to be - we scout on average 3 days for every day we shoot. There is no substitution for scouting. Not sure how you conclude birds were spooked? 185 picked with a cartridge to kill ratio of one bird for 1.3 shots kind of confirms the birds were brought into our "killing zone"....we nearly ran out of shells (we had 250 with us) and if not would probably have shot 250-300 which is an outstanding bag in our area. We shot conservatively and actually left any long or difficult shots as we were low on shells plus we also wanted to make a decent video ....with the stock of shells we had we could not have shot more. Had we wanted to really go to town we would have shot from two hides with two spreads and taken another slab of shells in which case we may have even pushed close to 400. However we set out to have a relaxing and enjoyable day...not all about the bag size.

Definitely good shooting with that kill ratio ! Just a personal preference with the magnet usage as it can put them off and make the shooting harder. I use an FF5 as it's lighter to carry, especially with my back which is buggered. Wish I had a pound for every gallon I've spent on diesel doing reconnaissance over the last 30 years.

@@boba5984 We used Flapper's for the whole of last year but just cannot find one that is durable enough for our workload. We burnt out 3 from "The Pigeon Shooter" in 4 months and then moved on to the ones from A1 Decoy and burnt that out in about 3 months. I spoke to Nick Tait and asked him if his would take the workload we have (that is 3-7 days a week) and he said with the motor's he was using the answer was no. He said he'd sourced some upgraded motor's that would do the job and I'm waiting to hear from him. That said we always used Flapper and Magnet particularly on Winter OSR, on the days Sam and I shoot together on OSW we usually use two Magnets and that is deadly on it's day. That said, as you know, you need to adapt to the conditions and the bird behaviour and that's where folks struggle as they set up with an idea in their heads of what a decoy spread should look like.
