Join us for a day Pigeon Decoying over Oilseed Rape. Here we are shooting woodpigeons in the late winter/early spring in order to protect a crop of oilseed rape that has been heavily grazed by these Pigeons.
In the video we shoot from two hides, we had started by shooting in separate locations but a strong wind meant they pigeons would only decoy to one spread so we joined up and just increased the decoy spread using a combination of two FF6 flappers, a magnet, a Mojo and a mix of half shell and Sillosock Pigeon Decoys.
Cartridges in use were Hull Steel Game Extra 32g 3's and once we had filled our order for Steel Shot Pigeons we did use a few of our normal "go to load" which is Hull Superfast Pigeon with a felt wad. We are hoping to have some exciting news for you by the end of summer about a new biodegradable wad for use in combination with steel shot!

Only downside to using steel shot is 95% are still loaded in plastic wads. Hopefully given recent developments most main cartridge manufacturers will move on to biodegradable wads of some form. Good shooting and i enjoyed the craic between you and Sam as always! 😆👍

Thanks for commenting Wayne. Yes I know. We swap the shotkam between numerous guns and it needs calibrating for each one but doesn't get done! We nearly didn't use the clips but in the end decided they added more to the content than they took away.

Thanks Neil. Yes and no.....4000 acres of our ground is our own, we run two Pheasant Shoots and lease in two estates so we have the shooting rights on those. Some of our Pigeon Shooting is over ground where we do some business with the farmer such as buy our wheat so we have a mutually beneficial relationship. Yes, we have a few who we drop something to but I have to admit we didn't do it this last Christmas as Covid has made face to face contact difficult.

Yes, Tide is our old Lab'. When he was just under a year old he injured his front shoulder and was out of action for a couple of months and that's catching up with him this last year. It's not bothering him massively and once he's moving he's fine but he will need to go onto Metacam before this next winter.

Yes Sam shoots off his left shoulder and uses a right handed semi, also uses a right handed 10g pump action on geese. He did have a left handed semi when he was about 9 or 10 but moved nearly straight away to a right hander when he started using 3.5" loads on geese. It's never bothered him, I guess because it's what he's become accustomed to.

Good video, looking to start using steel myself, you showed some steel cartridges at the start but was the ones in the blue cases that you both were using the same loads?
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 3 жыл бұрын
Nowthen Anthony. We had an order for some Steel Shot Pigeons and I think we needed 60 to complete the order. Once we'd shot those with the Hull Steel Game Extra (black case) we changed over to Hull Superfast Pigeon in the blue cases. We would have carried on with steel but we keep a separate freezer for the steel shot birds and those 60 would fill it. Plus we didn't have many steel shells left so didn't want to "waste" them. We have a couple of earlier videos from 2019 (I think) where we used steel all day.
@shootingwithanthony3496
@shootingwithanthony3496 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobertGriffinshootingTV 👍 how did you find the steel that you used? I have dabbled with a few different ones and can only get on with 3'' loads 36g 3's but that is too expensive for the pigeons 🤷‍♂️
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 3 жыл бұрын
@@shootingwithanthony3496 get on with it fine. In season Sam will be out on the shore 3-5 flights a week and I'll do 2-3 + we have 8 ponds and 2 lakes on two estates we lease so we have always used a lot of steel on ducks and geese. I find that "standard" steel needs some adjustment in terms of cutting back on range as energy drops off sharply once yo get beyond 35 yards. However I just use "High Performance" Steel and that is a big improvement in performance. Hull do those Steel shells as "Steel Game" and "Steel Game Extra", the "Extra" are the HP version and I find they are a big step up on the "standard" ones. Hull do those in 28 and 32g and the 28g version are evil little shells....very quick and hard hitting, we have used those a lot on splashes and even decoying Pinks inland.

Great to see you back lads but what was happening with the Shotkam footage. The cross hairs were miles off the pigeons?
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Terry. As I mentioned in an earlier reply it is moved between various guns and we didn't calibrate it to that semi. We knew it was out but we didn't think it made a significant difference. Sam did say it would cause nothing but grief. We did consider not using the footage and we did discard most clips however we decided to retain and use some clips as they added some value to the video.
