This hybrid of the classic pigeon pose for the glutes and thread the needle for thoracic rotation and low back mobility is one of my favorite combinations, especially if movements that integrate the gait cycle (lunging, running, single arm rowing, single leg deadlifting, etc) cause you pain or stiffness.
Give this a try - I highly recommend doing it before the activity that's giving you problems to open up better rotation at the hips and spine. Let me know what you think!
