Volkswagen 1.6TDI Caddy Maxi Injector ISSUES!

First on mine went at 38K a month ago. 2011 1.6 Caddy Maxi Life, had 29K on the clock when I bought it a few years ago. AA repaired at £660, £500 of that covered, genuine VW injector, with a 2 year warranty. They go in sequence, 1 and 3, 2 and 4, from what I can gather. I've had no 3 replaced by the AA, and replaced no 1 at the garage, along with a new spill/fuel pipe. Huge cost, but I don't feel like a sitting duck, just waiting for the next one to go. You need a small mortgage to replace all of them at the same time. :( Limp mode is no use on a smart motorway! I've read recently that injector problems can be caused because the bonnet drips water straight onto the injectors. I had noticed this, and careful not to open the bonnet in the rain without wiping it first. So they need an engine cover. Electrical contacts and water don't mix. I wonder if this is the root cause of the problem. Here below is a link to putting in an engine cover, although I think the injectors are still duff, I'm hoping this works! Ah sorry to hear that's a big expense like you say! Hopefully the last one keeps going! Interesting point that could cause an issue like you say. I'll check it out and thanks for the link as well.

I had this problem and through investigating via different forum's, I found that some of the forum members had had all four of their injectors replaced FREE of charge by VW. Certain criteria had to be met... I had to phone my local VW commercial garage/dealer to find out if the van firmware had been upgraded (due to the VW emissions scandal), you have to give them the reg and vin number, if it has been updated and the injector/s are/have failed you can fight/demand that they are all changed. Unfortunately my firmware hadn't been updated so I had to pay for my replacement injectors. I also found that the problem that caused these injectors to fail is that the insulation on the electrics inside the injectors breaks down (not mechanical).

Hey Eddie, thanks for letting me know, that's really interesting. I'll give them a call and see what the situation is on my current caddy. I've had one replaced already before purchasing the van. But the rest have been fine since.

@@roostaraver No, I think all Caddy’s with the 1.6tdi from 2010 to 2013 were fitted with these faulty injectors. The othe owners on the Caddy forum at the time 2018) who had had the firmware update all had their injectors replaced by VW, so the cans were between 5 & 8 year old.

I also have on going problems with injectors in my 1.6 caddy 2014, I replaced one , then another one. Now while I was driving 2 injections popped out, I hear some noise that got louder from engine. The bolt that holding down the injectors snapped as I I used it again, apparently is a single use bold.

Hi I’m very happy with your video,I’m from Bicester Oxfordshire,I have problem with my golf mk6 1.6tdi start well in the morning first time work fine and start fine when is off 15,30,45,60,90 minutes but when it’s off over 2hours until 8 hours when it’s whether not cold start very bad,after 10-12hours off again start well ,when start bad doing vibration but after 5minutes drive vibration gone no problem at all very strange nothing on the dashboard no fault problem but definitely something is wrong,I check the injectors first one is 150;48:45;last one 198 that’s not good but I’m not sure that it’s wrong or something else because when the car start well no vibration no problem noting on the dashboard,I tried to find what it’s exactly wrong but nobody know yet

Right problem solved, happened on the Van yesterday & a couple of times before. So how do you know which one has gone?

I believe that if it's been replaced it will have the newer code on top of the injector. Saying this, I imagine these could fail as well just like anything can. But it's the original ones fitted by vw that have the fault. In an ideal world vw should have done a recall or pay for replacements.

That engine is out for 10 years now and they cant sort our the problem with these injectors... junk.

It common fault 1,6 TDI I need replaced 4 did myself cost 240f each I think VW fixed it for all engines 2014 onwards.putting different injectors. It should be under recall.. another problem with this engine is egr valve which it rubbish designed as well so it is matte of time when it is fail VW bulletproof cars myth is ended. That it my last VW car

That's a shame and I think its 2016 upwards as I've seen 2015 caddys with the issue and even some mk3 caddys with the issue as well. But there'll also be thousands if not hundreds of thousands of caddys with no issues.

Does anyone know of the horrendous injector problem from the 1.6 MK3 Caddy era was solved by the time the MK4 Caddy was introduced? 
If yes I presume the injectors on the MK5 Caddy Commerce must be at last fit for purpose?

Hey, it was not unfortunately, my mk4 still has the old injectors, with one being replaced. I assume the they fixed it for the MK5.

Thanks for the AA tip! Great videos too. Mine's on 142K and all original injectors so a (very expensive) ticking time bomb probably... That said, in the year I've owned it, it's actually been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It drives very nicely too. Definitely jinxed it now!

Hahaha thing is it might be completely fine. You never here about the positives and I'm sure theres thousands of vans with no issues on the road. The other thing is that many people dont look after their cars. (Don't yearly service or use fuel cleaners etc etc) so again that could be a big cause but you never know. Glad the video helped though!

I'm surprised mine hasn't blown up already, it was the dirtiest, most badly serviced (i.e. every 20-30,000 miles!) vehicle I've ever bought and yet it's seemingly fine. I've had other, older generation, VAG group cars with much lower mileages and meticulously maintained that have been nothing but trouble. I'll post back in a few weeks when all of the injectors have gone, the EGR's seized and the gearbox has fallen out...

Once the injector failed, did it right itself for a bit? I have a 2011 Caddy 1.6tdi. Mine went into limp mode recently, with the glow coil light flashing. Code reader said number 2 injector circuit fault. I took the plug off injector 2 and cleaned with contact cleaner. Seemed to sort it but has happened again. I've changed the plug for a new in case it was that as it sounded like an electrical short, but hasn't cured it. Was yours intermittent?

Hey, sorry to hear that you've had issues with yours. Mine never actually failed. I just made the video to raise awareness. So I wouldn't know I'm afraid. I'd get the AA out on the parts and garage cover and get them to replace it for the £35 excess. Saving you hundreds of pounds.

@@willsvanadventures Not sure about the under 10 years old bit. Mine is a 2011 1.6 and first injector went last month, July 2024. Sorted by the AA on Parts and Garage cover. Might be because I'm a Gold Member of the AA, but I don't think so. Best to check on older vehicles.

Hi. I have a 2010 sdi caddy. Got my van back yesterday and now have a engine management light on. Garage I first took it to said egr code was coming up, so took it to a diesel specialist who didnt plug it in & tested the injectors instead and said that's the problem. Then took it to auto electricians to sort out abs look, in receiving it back he said he plugged his box in and egr valve fault.

The AA won’t pay out on breakdown repair cover for commercial vehicles. I was mis-sold the same cover and they refused to pay up for repairs. I finally got them to refund me for the past 3 years of payments after 12 months of emailing

Hi Amy, I'm not sure I'm afraid. If you join the caddy groups on facebook and search for injectors I'm sure they'll be a post. However I've never seen anything about the 2L so I wouldn't of thought so. Hope that helps!

Got myself a 2015 maxi this week with 58k on the clock, 2 days and less than 100 miles later injector 2 has gone, very frustrating after allot of research and viewing over 30 maxi's, thought I had got myself a good one. Can happen anytime at any mileage!!

That's interesting to hear. I've seen on many caddy groups that there is a few different types of replacements and like anything it depends what you buy/replace it with. Would be interesting to find out which brand is the best replacement.

I have a 2015 1.6 caddy maxi too. Bought it april this year 30 thousand miles on the clock. 2 weeks agter buying 3rd injector went and now another injector has gone. 😭😭😭 Thankfully covered with warranty however it has been an absalute nightmare most garages wont deal with warranty covers and the big garages that too charge £120 an hour labour whicg the cover only covers £60. So im out of pocket

Yeh mate warranty covered that however this time i think i will have to pay out my own pocket but it is what it is i love my van and wasnt aware of the problem however id always take the caddy over a transit rust bucket. Btw brilliant posting these videos mate spot on

Legend for this video. Just put a deposit down on literally the exact same van, same year with 80K miles. Pretty sure 3 of the injectors have been done and there’s one original left. Thing ran smooth when I test drove it but private buyer so fack knows! It’s a gamble but I’ve wanted a van for ages and this was a bargain! @@willsvanadventures My garage chap said the refurbished are a waste of money. He had a car which had had 7 refurbished injectors, one after another had failed in a very short time. He said it was better to get the PF Jones injectors, at £365 a pop. I reckon he's right about that.

Hey, I'm not sure tbh, I think it's just the 1.6 engines but you can check the codes on the injectors to be more sure. :)

These injectors dont fail because they get clogged, but inside wireing/ec fails. I wouldnt use any cleaner... My old 1,9 tdi awx has done 200k miles, other things failed... engine was still perfectly running. That 1.6 tdi is a joke.
