Thanks for covering this. In the 90s when I was in primary school this was even more old school - two storey with market below and hawker upstairs, very wet smelly and dirty. I loved the char kueh (similar to chye tau kueh) by the old couple, sibeh song. They moved to this renovated hawker but Im not sure retired which year. Hope they are still well.

Unusual to see hokkien mee uncle speaking English. When I was in SG last month all the hawkers I visited spoke Mandarin to me except one... Indian goreng pisang hawker at Hong Lim. Aren't English schools more commonplace in SG than Chinese schools?
@Piggypuggy2 жыл бұрын
I think most kids in Singapore still use mandarin as the preferred language to communicate right up till the 90s.. right before the internet age. Unless one is in some convent or saints schools. So you’d be surprised that while many speak English here.. their car radio is on mandarin channels 😄

Regarding the newly opened Urban Hawker in NYC, I've not visited yet but from Yelp photos, I can see the marketplace is really nice, housing up to 17 stalls . However, the prices are steep even by NYC standard. Average entrees are USD 15-20. Hainan chicken rice is $19; oyster omelette is $17 and portion is small; murtabak is $15; white beehoon is $17, etc. Too rich for my blood. There are several Malaysian/Singaporean restaurants in NYC that serve very good, authentic food and do not leave a hole in yr pocket. They are located in the Chinatowns in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
@Piggypuggy2 жыл бұрын
I already feel nauseous hearing $19 chicken rice 😵🤢 wonder if there’s still a tip jar 😅 That’s just ludicrous!!! I wonder if it’s to cover their rent.. if not.. it’s just unacceptable 😭 It’s not hawker price
@minniec.91272 жыл бұрын
@@Piggypuggy I totally agree with you; it's highway robbery. Of course, the high prices are to partially cover the high rent in midtown Manhattan, prime real estate. Also, to cover other overhead costs i.e., employee wages/benefits, insurance, biz license, etc. But there are other food places in that area that don't charge an arm & a leg. You can still get a decent meal for $10-12. I think Urban Hawker can get away with overcharging b/c it's the only Singaporean "hawker centre" in the vicinity. Clientele are willing to pay. It's novel and they're Covid prices; everything has gone way up in the US. Their prawn Hokkien mee stall charges $21-26 for what you ate. 🤣😥👎

I found NBR almmost by accident a few years ago when I was staying at Lavender and walking over to Golden Mile (this was in the days before Hill St Tai Hwa BCM had its Michelin Star.) There used to be a fantastic fried carrot cake stall run by an old autie and uncle (Ke Shuan Xing I think.) Sad to see the stall had gone last time I was there in 2019 - I heard that the uncle retired; the family took over the stall but they didn't want to do carrot cake any more so they sell lor mee now.

The Hokkien mee serving so big? Wasn’t this big when I went there a month ago to try. I don’t quite like their chilli as I prefer sambal belachan. I requested for extra pork lard the auntie ask me pay $1 for more. I rejected. In the end I went to the infamous prawn mee stall and get more fresh fried pork lard since I’m also getting the prawn noodles. The prawn noodle is a must go every time I’m there. Huge serving and so many prawns just for $4/$5. Another famous stall is the yong tau foo at the right row 1st stall from the left. The ah pek do the coffee also make very nice coffee.

For those viewers who find these videos tantalizing and decide to follow, especially non-locals: be careful. Just to share my bad experience here. Saw this video and cycled there with family Friday evening. Got there around 7:30pm. Tried this Chicago Nasi Lemak mentioned 7:03. Yup, Nasi Lemak $3 sign was there. So I went up and asked for Nasi Lemak. The guy (as seen in the video) scooped rice in the plate and said "Lai, order." I was a bit puzzled, but maybe becos too tired from cycling, got brain short circuit, so I just did as told - I ordered... exactly the ingrediants of Nasi Lemak: a fried egg and a chicken wing. There's no cucumber to be seen, so I added fried cabbage as veggie. Saw some shrimp, so added that. Then when the owner started scissoring the wing, I recalled there should be ikan billie and fried peanuts in Nasi Lemak, so I asked for those too, the owner said those will add 1.2 dolloars. I continued brain short circuit and said ok. Once done, the owner put the plate down and said "7 dolloars 10 cents". I was shocked. Based on the look on that guy's face, I didn't dare to ask what happened to the $3 Nasi Lemak? 4.1 dollars for some small portion of cold shrimps and a cabbage? (To be fare, later turned out the wing was nice) Anyway, this is the second time I followed this channel and got shocked like this. (Last time was the $7 Holland Village food centre kway chap). I started to feel there's some kind of unspoken rules in ordering food in this kind of food centres. I don't look like a Singaporean, so I get "shocked" mostly. Next time when the owner says, "Lai, order", I'll meekly point at the $3 sign and say, I just want this for $3, as the sign says, and see what happens. Hopefully not getting puched in the face. 🤐
