@mcmptn4 жыл бұрын
@@endor8witch It gets less subtle every time I watch the movie. To be honest, I think I like it more as an adult than I did as a child. As a kid, it's like "Oh cute! Talking animals!" As an adult, it's like "Oh my goodness! It's that person I know from (wherever)!" or "Didn't we just read about something like this on social media?"
@ARCtheCartoonMaster4 жыл бұрын
I'll admit, I was somewhat confused by her mentioning "the boss's husband" as a kid, like Mr. Hoggett was in a bisexual threesome or something. But yeah... with her spending more time around Esme, it makes sense she would view her as "the boss".

Well, Mrs. Hoggett is her boss
@mcmptn4 жыл бұрын
@@SwaggieVortex733 Of course, a real cat would probably refer to "servants" instead of "bosses," but considering this whole conversation is her saying, "I'm pretending to be more useful than I am," I can see why she would feign subservience. Funny thing: despite all the 'diabolical' plans Mr Tinkles had in that stupid film 'Cats and Dogs', I find Duchess to be a far more realistically 'evil' cat than him. Sure Tinkles was hammy about 'trying to take over the world and overthrowing dogs yadda yadda, but Duchess' manipulative words are just....too real. Like someone who pretends to be your friend then puts you down in a toxic manner. Now THAT is one evil kitty. Oh and another thing I love about this film: unlike the first cats and dogs where cats are treated as an entire evil species (It only works well imo if the protagonists are mice or birds and even the fievel films acknowledges that 'good' cats do exist ), the narrator in Babe at least acknowledges that 'there are plenty of nice cats in the world, it's just that every basket has its fair share of bad apples'.

To be fair, though, that was a different kind of movie, so it makes sense that they would have different kinds of villains. What I find fascinating about this scene is that it's an interesting parallel to the scene that *other* pig movie, _Charlotte's Web_ , where Wilbur initially hears what happens to pigs. In that movie, it happens right after Wilbur is delivered to his new home, and his anxiety about dying young is what sets the conflict for the rest of the movie. Whereas in _Babe_ , while the threat of the pig being slaughtered is also a recurring theme throughout the movie, Babe himself is completely unaware of that little tidbit until the last 20 minutes or so, so instead it's presented as a big, dramatic twist, similar to the "liar revealed" trope - throwing a wrench in the works and creating tension before the climax. It's interesting how these two stories use basically the same plot device, but utilise it in the exact opposite manner in relation to the story.
