Cuka was my late Latvian father’s favourite naughty word. Whenever I displayed bad table manners, he used to say: “Ak tu cuka!” Thanks to this video, now I know all about cukas and can probably do my dad proud.

Good to have you back Annette! My dogs love cukus ausis as a treat. I like the word piecūkot (to pigify) ha ha. I think that Cūkmens and Smoky the bear would be good friends. Have you heard the phrase “when pigs fly”? Meaning that something will never happen. Do you know “pig in a poke”? It’s an unseen entity that someone is trying to sell to you. Neesam kopā cukas ganījusi shows us that herding pigs with someone is a true bonding experience. “You can put lipstick on a pig”……..but it doesn’t disguise it. Thank you for the enlightening and entertaining video but please don’t stay away so long.

Thanks for your comment! I did know some of these expressions, but not “pig in a poke”. I think there’s a similar one in Latvian “pirkt cūku maisā” - “to buy a pig in a sack” and you can replace “pig” by other animals. Thank you again, lovely comment :)

@@irregularLatvian Ah yes, a poke is an old southern American term for a bag or a sack. I don’t know where the word originated, but many American southern words and expressions can be attributed to the black enslaved people or indigenous Americans. Have you heard the song “poke salad Annie” by Little Milton? Anyway, I’m glad you’re back and I’ll see you in your next video, maybe.

Hi, also back to your channel recently and glad to see that you kept it really meaningful, entertaining and super fun to watch. Here in Brasil (we actually spell it with an “S”), we have an idiom “Espírito de porco”-“Pig spirit”, which is used to describe somebody naughty, malicious, messy, or inconvenient. As for a delicacy, we have “Feijoada”, a dish made with black beans and pork parts. We don’t use the nose but ears, feet and tails are fair game in some cases, besides sausages, ribs, cubes of tenderloin. . Toss me your 2 cents, I am curious about that scandal, would you?!?

There are some expressions like, "In a pigs eye", "when pigs fly", but I am curious is there a Latvian expression or equivalent of being "pig headed"?

"In a pig eye", expresses scornful disbelief at a statement. "When pigs fly", expenses something that is highly unlikely to ever happen. "Pig Headed", means impossibly stubborn.@@irregularLatvian

It would have been great to get a clear interpretation of what was meant about the Ukrainian soldiers when depicting them like that. Very interesting video nonetheless, thanks a lot for culturing us.
@irregularLatvian

Thanks for your comment. So the comic was released on the two day anniversary (I hate to use this word, is there another word for this) of the war against Ukraine. The soldiers on the left is saying : “we will fight against victory” and the other one: “ because what other choice do we have”? I think it’s a jab at world leaders saying they will support Ukraine “as long as it takes”, deliberately staying vague about what they mean. The scandal arose from the fact that they were depicted as pigs. But the whole comic series has been pigs for years and nobody noticed. In the end the comic was pulled from the website of the news.
