In this tutorial, we'll get started with using a PiicoDev® RFID module by making some starter projects. Once we're done, you'll be able to read the simple ID off a tag, and read or write data to the tag. Depending on the tag type, we can turn the tag into an interactive RFID tag which triggers certain readers (like smartphones) to execute actions such as opening webpages, showing a specific location on a map, and loads more!

This is awesome information, thanks. I’m curious about the next step though, how is the signal sent to the lock to cause it to unlock?

I have a project in mind that will involve the tag being on a pet's collar and so I need more like 1m range. I saw something that indicated 13.56 Mhz should work up to 1m, but the technical specifications on the picodev RFID module page indicate 26mm (about 1 inch). Is there a module I can use with a Pi that would recognize a tag from .5m-1m away?

Nice video. Very well demonstrated. I'm assuming you can do away with the pico adapter and plug the RFID board directly into the SPA pins?

Thanks Daniel! That's correct, except this module uses I2C instead of SPI.

I've got a question regarding the RFID module: Is it also possible to use another one? Most I see on the market (same 13,56MHz) seem to have way more pins, which needs to be connected. This one only uses 3.3V, GND, SDA and SCL (or am I mistaken)? Could I also use Modules having MISO, MOSI and other connections like common RFID Kit RC522, without using this pins, or do they function in another way? Unfortunately, your modules have quite a high shipping fee :( If not, why does your module got so little connection count compared to other ones?

You probably have you answer by now, but yes. I just bought a very common RC522 kit with 8 pins, 7 of which are used when using the SPI protocol.

Hey, I was wondering if it has to be a Pi 4, and if not what would be the lowest Pi I could use? For the past year me and my dad have been working on a Pi Zero W2 (I think), we have been using it to play old ROM's. So I was wondering if I could reuse the pi or if I would need to buy a more advanced Pi.

You shouldn't have any problems running on older Raspberry Pi Models, our PiicoDev modules are designed for MicroPython devices like Raspberry Pi Pico & MicroBit so you shouldn't experience any issues with a Pi Zero.
