The older the computer, the less powerful the computer is. Look at the Apple II. Watch when Mario climbs a ladder. See how Mario and the ladder sort of merge? That's because Apple didn't have sprites and had to draw everything by hand. On top of that, they remove some drawing steps to get more speed (you mask off the parts of Mario and the ladder they they have bits in common and then restore the ladder during the next draw). The version on the Atari 800 did the same thing. Mario is fine because he's a sprite but the barrel had to be draw at run time and they left the same steps out for speed. So yes, the NES beat the others. Now try it against the Atari 7800.

Many PC games from that era had an issue where the game's speed was dependent on the speed of the computer it was being run on. That's actually why many 90s computers had a "turbo" button, so the CPU could be slowed down to make programs designed for the Intel 8086 not run ultra fast.

The NES version is missing the cement factory level, supposedly because Nintendo couldn't afford a large enough cartridge for it that early in the NES's life. That said, the Colecovision version has all four levels and was on older hardware, so I have to think they didn't try very hard. The Game Boy version is _spectacular_, but I hesitate to call it a port, honestly. The first four levels are there, but Mario has numerous tricks he can't do in the arcade original (like being able to toss the hammer around), and the controls feel very different. It's an total reimagining of the original.

Run it on the correct hardware (composite CGA monitor) at the correct speed and the DOS version is very close to the Apple II version, with slightly more detailed graphics and slightly fewer colors (though what it has are considerably less eye-searing than the magenta/blue combo you see here). It's better, IMO, than the Atari 2600 version, and more complete than the NES version, but inferior to the Colecovision and both C64 versions.

These weren't terrible ports by any stretch. You have to remember the context: you simply couldn't get arcade-perfect ports on late 1970s/early 1980s hardware. The Atari 2600, Intellivision, and Colecovision ports were _amazing_ for the time, and everyone treated them as such. Heck, even the NES version had to make sacrifices to get the game ported: it was pretty authentic in terms of graphics and sound, but it omits a whole quarter of the game entirely. There were some legitimately terrible arcade ports in that era (the Atari 2600 Pac-Man is rightly remembered as godawful), but officially licensed Nintendo ports tended to be the cream of the crop. Nobody in their right mind would have been disappointed with any of these DK ports in the early 1980s.
@theobserver42145 жыл бұрын
Sean Daugherty The Intellivision and 2600 were made graphically inferior on purpose to make the Colecovision versions look better, however, they still played well. The NES port was also good, but it took a Wii version to get Arcade perfect levels and content
@michaelminervini19083 жыл бұрын
At the time, the Atari 2600 version was considered awesome. It cant be expressed just how exciting it was to play an arcade game at home. Just like people that grew up after the 80's wont understand how also exciting it was to got to a store and get an actual movie to watch at home.

Let's see. Atari 2600 - Quite faithful, despite the huge limitations this old console offered. Shame there is no music though. Intellivision - The walking sound reminds me of an accordion. Okay but not impressive. ColecoVision - Really good port, if not for the fact that the level is mirrored. NES - As a matter of fact, this port is graphically and sound-wise one of the best and most nostalgic ones, but they could have done a much more accurate version, the NES could handle that. Commodore 64 (Atarisoft) - Very accurate one, but DK looks sad and it plays a little slow. Commodore 64 (Ocean) - Quite okay port, but the choppy graphics and sound could've been a little better. DOS - This one is creepy af. I can't blame though, the DOS is not the best choice to port games like this on it. Apple II - Port of the DOS port. DK doesn't look as scary but it's still not too impressive. Commodore VIC-20 - Pretty average. The sound is nice and Mario runs quite quickly. If not for the pixelated graphics then it's okay. Texas TI-99 - Another good port, looks really accurate, if not for the sound. Atari 8-bit Computers - DK looks even sadder here. A pretty nice port if not for the mirrored level design. Amstrad CPC - Pretty scary and loud sound chip on this one, top notch in accuracy though. ZX Spectrum - Based on the MSX port. The Speccy is also not the best console both graphic/sound-wise. Atari 7800 - The music is offkey and the walking sound is creepy. Other than that, nice NES port. Kana Kong - Nice hack you got there. The MSX port didn't make the cut - not the most impressive work for the MSX. The graphics are awkward. The Amiga port which you also missed is quite good, both aesthetically and sound-wise. And it features an additional level!
