The thing I find most unsettling about this theme isn't the music, but rather the lack of alternate versions of it for Olimar and Louie. Normally every other theme in the game has different versions of the theme, depending on if you're currently controlling Olimar or Louie. Louie's themes are usually in a swing rhythm compared to the normal rhythm of Olimar's. You could think of it like Olimar and Louie having different outlooks on the situation when commanding Pikmin in the field, with Olimar having a more serious view and Louie being a bit more carefree. Submerged Castle is the one area in the game where the themes are the same regardless of who you're controlling, so even Louie is unsettled.

It's even hardcoded believe it or not. Trying to change the music for this cave is impossible. In fact, most floors are set to play the same music as Hole of Heroes Sublevel 6, but this overwrites it.

The Submerged Castle is honestly one of the best designed levels in any game EVER. Right from the get go they nail the "off" feeling before you even enter the cave- you can only bring Blues, yet there's all 4 hazards. Oh, and if you somehow did manage to get other colours over, the game outright denies you. You are playing by the Submerged Castle's rules now. Right from the first sublevel, the sense of dread kicks in- sheer darkness, fire everywhere, traps everywhere, and you have to kill one of the toughest enemies in the game without the type that beats it- a Fiery Bulblax. The *first* sublevel has an exit Geyser, like even the game itself is telling you to run while you still can. Do I even need to mention the music you're hearing right now? That dreary hum, the distorted piano noise, the sounds of despair... it's like the song is building up to something, but then it just stops. It leaves you in constant suspense of an approaching danger. Now, most people probably get through the first floor without seeing it. It takes longer for it to spawn, and it's a small floor. You might even get some slight hope: "Okay, dealing with all the hazards will be tricky, but as long as I *go slow and take my time,* I should be okay!" The second floor is basically crafted so that you HAVE to encounter the Waterwraith. Two areas, both far apart, both blocked off by walls, and both take time to get the treasures. It doesn't help that the Dweevils will stall you by taking the treasures over and over. Of course, your first time in, time is the least of your worries. You have infinite time in caves, just play it safe. Then down it comes. The Waterwraith. The only enemy in the game to get an entire cutscene dedicated to it, and not one but two unique themes. The ship warns you that this isn't a regular enemy- it can't be killed. But it can instantly kill you. Suddenly, everything changes. That alarming music plays as you realise all you can do is run. Pikmin deaths, traps, enemies, treasure, none of it matters anymore. All that matters is running as fast you can and getting out of this place. The final floor is the perfect way to end the Submerged Castle- this time, IT plays by YOUR rules. Finally, you can take your revenge on the Waterwraith for terrorising you for 3 floors straight, and do what it did to you. There's a reason this cave is the most famous out of them all in Pikmin 2, and the fact that it returned in Pikmin 4, right down to the music and layout of the Sublevels, is a testament to one of the greatest levels in gaming.

God this song is just super unsettling. Even with the other cave songs that can get a little unsettling it's more of a "fear of the unknown". Submerged Castle sounds like you just walked into someone's domain and you KNOW you fucked up but you have to keep going regardless. No one has said enough about this song, so I will. This song has the ability to strike an innate, primal, debilitating true *fear* in me that no other song is able to. It's similar to uncanny valley. The instruments are foreign and therefore unfamiliar to me, and it just sounds so very *broken* with its time signature and its shocking droning hums that kick in after you're sure the song is simply clacks and a melody - if it could even be called a "melody", of course. Let's go back to the part about the mournful droning. As a human behaviour nerd, I thought that the reasoning for the fear that struck into my heart when I heard that droning was simply due to our innate desire to soothe babies. You see, the droning takes on a similar rhythm to a baby's cry, and as such it is just akin enough to activate the alarm responses in our brains and force us into this sense of unease and fear. Because we know *something* is wrong, but we can't put our finger on it. Lastly, the song itself carries a resemblance to the idea of "uncanny valley". It's just music-like enough to sound familiar, but those instruments and those sounds, - along with the frankly terrifying droning hums, - really sound so unfamiliar and foreign. This is precisesly what activates the uncanny valley feeling for most; the sense of unease and unfamiliarity at something that is just close enough to be familiar, but is inherently *"off"* in some way. And that is just a portion of what I'd like to say about this song. I may as well make a video on my thoughts about it at some point, eh?

Louie didn't actually try to eat the Waterwraith, he just put in his log that it causes mass hysteria (freaking out at just the sight of it alone), leg spasms (running away without even thinking about it), and internal thunderings (he basically crapped himself.) Remember that the Waterwraith doesn't actually exist in Louie's dimension.

My skill in this game always seems to get higher in this cave. The last time I did it, I managed to get through the first four sublevels without the waterwraith appearing. I got VERY lucky on sublevel 3 (The treasures and exit hole were very close together.) I did have to reset once (I think it was either sublevel 3 or 4.), But it wasn't because of the Waterwraith spawning, it was because a bomb-rock blew up half my Pikmin.

I like to think that, based on Pikmin 4’s rendition of this cave (along with the padlock message), the wraith is a mix of two souls entwined with each other, and haunt caves that have been flooded. The reason might be because they died in a flood. Not trying to say that this is canon, but just a thought.

Engulfed Castle was kind of disappointing for me. I saw it's position, I saw the rollers in Olimar's log, and I saw the name, and I was immediately fearful. But during the cave I only encountered it once, on the second sublevel, when I was specifically waiting to see if the Waterwraith was actually in Pikmin 4. The game is amazing, and I love it, but it feels rather easy sometimes, maybe a little too easy.

Its a nice call back, but there is alot of small things which kept it from being as difficult. The Waterwraith seems a little more absent minded and didn't seem as hard locked onto the captain. There isn't as many traps, no falling bombrocks. The fact that floors 1, 3 and 4 aren't randomized anymore also made it so it wasn't as difficult. finally got to the submerged castle in my first pikmin 2 playthrough and jesus, I legit felt SCARED and uneasy going through it. So much in fact that I actually split up both louie and olimar and rushed out of there collecting all the treasures. *It made me so scared that I got good at the game just for that moment and speedran through this cave.* Love this cave!
