To clarify this for the viewers- the umebozu theory has not been confirmed by the report, rather all that happens is that a character proposes several theories as an explanation for the crashes. Including the umebozu theory. That means that the THEORY is canon in-universe. As in, a character thinks it is plausible. It does not confirm anything outright. (Though, it does explicitly say that the waterwraith’s rollers are made of meteorite materials).

They haven't outright proved or confirmed anything, but the characters are investigating these mysteries like we are. The Pikmin Garden lore is truly INSANE. The fact they're officially acknowledging things we've been speculating about for years is INCREDIBLE. I do find the multiple comments about the planet itself being alive SUPER fascinating, like that deserves it's own discussion entirely for the implications. Honestly given the website pitches three different scenarios for the crash landings, I wonder if it's some sort of symbiotic relationship between the Wraiths, the Pikmin, and the planet itself. The planet causes the crashes so that the captains can either lead the Pikmin and protect them OR so they can become Wraith food. Definitely gonna have to think about this but OH MAN IS IT EXCITING! This truly is the best time to be a Pikmin fan.

My expectation is that the umibozu-coded mythology was introduced no sooner than Pikmin 3. The way the Plasm Wraith behaves and acts as the final boss make it rather overt. The Water Wraith is also very obviously inspired by umibozu as well, don't get me wrong... but I expect its umibozu story was, at the time, conceived to be nothing more than a self-contained episode within the Submerged Castle. I argue this concept was elevated to being tied to the wrecking of ships in Pikmin 3, after the developers refined the concept and wrote a story for it. The original crash of the Dolphin was, at the time, probably not given much thought. I expect it's Miyamoto's minimalist storytelling striking once again. "They kidnap Princess Peach in a cake," "Olimar hits a meteor and crashes," they ring the same to me, y'know? Intentionally serviceable events that did not have anything planted there that wasn't already obvious. Though, even if nothing was put there at the time, doesn't mean it can't be recontextualized with later supplemental information. I think that is what's been done here. We haven't so much solved an ARG as much as we've simply watched the series grow to the point where it decided to tease new answers to things that weren't initially intended to be questions. And while that's not as fun a way to see things compared to believing we've solved an intentionally crafted ARG, I still think it's really cool.

Maybe if the planet itself is some form of "wraith" then it is using its magnetic field to manipulate the "meteors" to crash ships, meanwhile the other "wraiths" are like lesser agents being controlled by the planet itself, the goal being to bring back the "humans" that left it and evolved into the various spacefaring diminutive people we see in the games, this could even be why the planet is still rather pristine, like with Heroes Hideaway, the areas are being preserved by an unknown force for when the humans return.

Could you possibly discuss the Pikmin Theory? It explains that the reason every castaway crashes onto the planet is in part due to the Onions, not the Umebozu. Whenever leaflings talk, it's not from their mind filled with Dandori, but of the Onions themselves, especially Leafling Olimar. Other hints and clues that lean further into this theory is the fact that every captain (minus the avatar character in 4) notes that they have an overprotective urge to protect the pikmin or are inclined to pluck pikmin as if something is telling them to. The Leaflings are a way for the Onion to secure permanent leaders as seen with Leafling Olimar and to some extent, Moss.

I also feel that logically speaking, the Pikmin theory is much better supported than the Umebozu theory. I used to believe the Umebozu theory before Pikmin 4 came out, but the evidence is kind of scattered and you need to draw some specific conclusions not present in the games. The fact the pikmin and onions are always present and have space faring capability makes it way more believable in comparison.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that the Umibozu tale was the influence for the original game, and that the cultural disconnect left us westerners in the dark all this time. The gameplay and given story has proved enough in all games that this franchise stands strongly on its own legs without the need to study Japanese folklore prior (or have the game tell us in lengthy cutscenes, etc.

I noticed that the meteor in the P1 opening cutscene looks kind of like a konpeitō, a traditional Japanese candy often associated with the stars and meteors, as well as something that Nintendo has used before with falling stars in Mario Galaxy or in the Pokemon, Minior. Could it be that the name referring to candy and rain could be talking about candy-like meteors falling from the sky, placing the wraiths as being extraterrestrial in origin? From there the connection could be made to star festivals, wishing on falling stars, or even an extinction even caused by a meteor impact, which could relate to the lack of humanity on earth in Pikmin.

Since Pikmin 4, I had this strange idea that the world wasn't exactly.... real? But not fake either. Like, we're in a straight up house that's still clearly being lived in, but nothing about it ever changes, and there's creatures and caves everywhere..? That doesn't make sense. It's as though we're just visiting these locations on another plane of existence or something. A snapshot of time of how things were, minus the people, plopped down into this world where these creatures are real and just go with it, living in these new locations like nature returning. Combine that with learning that the website treats all 3 prior games as cannon and real, and it introduces the idea that the timeline is wonky, but only when THIS LOCATION is involved, like it all just kind of mixes together. One thing isn't exactly clear though. I don't recall (it's been a hot minute since I fully completed 4 twice) if anyone makes reference to these reports or any knowledge of Pikmin. So are these reports also from another blip in the timeline for US or are they also in game cannon? Getting back into the timeline a bit, if things continue in 5, will we get a soft reboot of 3? 2? or a whole new game story? They can really go anywhere in any way at this point with how they left things. Heck, I'm shocked a DLC didn't come out that was just the retelling of 2 or 3 post 4 timeline. Then there's the sage leafling and hooo-boy I don't know what to make of that guy. Just someone who had a similar experience to Olimar but didn't make it out and no one ever came looking for him that eventually fully adapted and overcame the pikification mindset of Dandori only.

I always liked the theory that the onions’ communication with pikmin via signals or whatnot were also able to interfere with ships and occasionally bring down captains, after which they would lend them the aid of the pikmin who they have a mutualist relationship with, parasitizing off of the captain’s intelligence to massively grow the pikmin’s numbers and put them on top of the food chain, thereby allowing the onion to thrive. To me it fits in a lot more with the games’ themes, not to mention how it reframes the events of the series to show that this really is a planet where survival of the fittest was taken to any extreme it could. Though this theory is pretty cool in a cosmic lovecraftian type of way too, it is a bit disappointing to me to be honest lol

While the amebozu/umibozu parallels had appeal when I first heard the theory, the related speculation such as a possible connection to the goolix seemed so flimsy that it ruined the credibility of the whole thing in my eyes. Going into this, I expected the only thing that would convince me was if Nintendo straight up said it and I was quite surprised that they actually did. However, there are some comments made in the series, such as the piklopedia entry on Moss, leave questions that are hard to answer with umibozu theory alone. My next question is if there's any reason to believe there are multiple forces, independent or unified, that are causing such an extreme number of crashes.

@boxylemons79614 ай бұрын
One thing that feels weird to me that’s unrelated to the theory mostly, as revealed by the pikmin garden website, is how there’s the implication that the spacefaring peoples in the series are somehow descended to humans. But that begs the question of really how they got to be so tiny then if they evolved from humans. If I remember correctly, don’t animals only evolve if the traits benefit their survival? How does going from being 6 foot tall to being mere inches provide any sort of biological advantage? And furthermore, just, how is that even possible? It makes a lot more sense to me that the people in the series are just humanoid, albeit tiny, aliens. Considering they apparently lost the ability to breathe oxygen as shown in the first game and the fact they’ve shrunk so much, it really makes way more sense. It doesn’t have to be explained too much. It’s not gonna ruin the series for me but it’s a very questionable decision in terms of the series lore
@TerminalDevastation4 ай бұрын
On its own, each trait really doesn't make sense... but paired... @FissionCube4 ай бұрын
@@TerminalDevastation i know with insects at least, a major theory for why many extinct species grew so much bigger than what still lives today is higher oxygen levels allowing them to get larger. maybe you could argue its some kinda inverse version of that. though i dont think oxygen levels are believed to be that big a contributing factor in the extinction of mammalian megafauna though. i guess theres also bergmann's rule that states that in general species in colder climates are larger and in warmer climates are smaller, and the thermal maximum events of the paleogene have been noted to cause dwarfism in species, though temporary and reversible. the layout of pnf-404 is clearly the theorised pangaea proxima supercontinent, a layout which would drive up the average temperature to a hothouse climate that would drive species to extinction. i suppose i could string together some crazy theory that theyre going with some weird thing where the temperature increase caused humans to evolve to be tiny???? or maybe more like climate change causing global warming which made people tiny and then they left earth and didnt become big again?? nintendo already has a climate disaster post apocalypse scifi speculative evolution plot in splatoon but i mean maybe theyre doing it again? (splatoon is the one that came second if that was always the idea but u know what i mean) i dunno its a weird implication i dont know why the little pikmin people are theorising they evolved from humans now. youd need some absolutley wild speculative evolution to make people tiny like that so any idea you could come up with is going to be a stretch by default. at the very least theres clearly some shared common ancestor between hocotatians, koppaites, giyans, etc so i mean theres gonna be some kind of ancestor species reveal i assume. i think itd be funny if theyre descended not from humans but some kind of small primate species. mouse lemur people or something.

It is explicitely stated in Pikmin 3 that the reason the creatures of PNF-404 are so big is because of the high amount of oxygen compared to Koppai and such. Perhaps the humans that left Earth and went to the planets that had less oxygen evolved to not need as much, therefore becoming smaller? IDK, I think Hocotations and Koppaites and such being descended from humans is a bit dumb to begin with, especially since Pikmin 1 alludes to PNF-404 being covered in radiation. It makes much more sense to me that we killed ourselves off with nuclear bombs; and the Umibōzu Wraith(s?) jumped at the chance to have intelligent life living with them again when Olimar happened to pass by (and then they got attached to him when he willingly returned multiple times).

Regarding the mentioning of the “Cultural DNA” of Pikmin, I think with this theory being confirmed alongside the emphasis on “Dandori” in pikmin 4, I think there needs to be more of an analysis of Pikmin through Japanese Lense. It seems like the series is very much deeply influenced by Japanese Culture and is certainly a uniquely Japanese game series. I don’t know how much western and Japanese fans of Pikmin really communicate, but I think there certainly needs to be some sort of look back into the whole series with an analysis of how Japanese Culture may have influenced it in even minor ways. Perhaps the Pikmin could be inspired by some kind of Yo-Kai in themselves. Hell maybe Olimar’s love of Pik-Pik carrots that he names the pikmin after could be inspired from some Japanese historical or folklore figure whose favorite food was carrots. Just spitballing here but maybe a lot of the aspects of the series we find weird could make more sense if we viewed the series through the lense of Japanese culture

i personally dont think humans are the progenitors of the other humanoids we see in the pikmin series. but my personal theory is that humans both do and dont exist at the same time of the games. considering how clean the world is, ie not overgrown over human structures and seemingly maintained, it could be that everything is kept clean by the wraiths themselves or perhaps the planet refuses to tarnish what once stood. this gives credence to the idea that the planet in some way is alive or has a will of its own. but perhaps everything we see that is man-made is actually the product of the umibozus? ways to show the past but also tempt any newcomers to try and study or claim it for themselves. another piece of the theory is that this is a mirror of our world. things change constantly because another version of the world of pikmin exists simultaneously with it, ie OUR world. this is why pikmin bloom is relevant to the series, this is why olimar dreamt of our world not the pikmin world, this is possibly how the wraiths know who or what we are. Olimar was seeing our world through a dream either because of the wraith or because he was just existing in two different planes while asleep. And the reason stuff moves is because humans interacting with things in our world somehow moves them in that one. The biggest factor to this theory is the water wraith itself. We literally see that it bends reality around itself, making itself invincible until hit by a purple pikmins gravity. Which theoretically is what would take it out of that form, immense gravity to staple it to a physical form or fix the strain between both worlds. the weirdest theory i can think of is that every being in pikmin that we can see is a 4th dimensional creature. it would explain how weird they get, like the ghost frog in pikmin 1, the wraiths, even ghost pikmin. it may also explain why people arent visible, theyre on a 3d plane while everything we see is 4d. thats how items get moved around, thats how places shift between games. it sounds stupid sure, nothing more than silly babble, but again the water wraith slipping in and out of existence really does hammer the nail somewhat. if you stayed this long, congrats you get a cookie! 🍪 thank you for coming to my TED talk!

@@VantageEmblem Basically the Onions are able to produce electromagnetic signals, which is how its able to communicate information to the Pikmin, as stated in the Piklopedia entry for the Gildemander specifically interfering with these signals. The theory essentially states that the Onion uses these signals to mess with the navigation systems of ships that pass by, which in turn cause them to crash land. This is all for the purpose of the further propagation of the Pikmin species, as is remarked by their general survivability under the guidance of a leader, and Pikmin 4's whole thing with explorers becoming leaflings because of their exposure to an Onion.

All 4 games are canon? Really? Then Pikmin 4 just did an awful job at referencing these events. Because there's always a part that doesn't add up in the timeline. Either Olimar is suffering from memory loss after so many crashes or it's the zelda timeline all ovetr again

I still don't get the umibozo theory being the wraiths. It's also not a theory I find particularly strong. I understand there's definitely cryptic reports about a mysterious force pulling captains in. I don't think "wraiths are pulling olimar in" is all that interesting. I do prefer the part where pnf404 is alive and could potential have an motive. I also want to point out, there was a koro koro interview on pikmin 1 development (i think its koro koro) with Miyamoto. He was saying things Pikmin is designed to make you question if you are the good guy or not and if Pikmin are a virus that's DELIBERATELY under control. The mamuta clearly play a roll with the pikmin and the parallel between the goolix and the wraith creature species. I'm interested if the pikmin see mamuta as a threat or a guardian. Which would explain the mamutas supposed to be found in the distant spring with the smoky prog (where i like the idea of it being a malformed wraith, but i think its just a malformed mamuta, as it only goes for pikmin) Prog and mamuta going for pikmin and wraiths only going for olimar feels like a joint effort to supress pikmin and their captains. What if its the pikmin that call olimar down, or the onions. The pikmin are a virus that needs a vessel a leader. Pikmin 4 only furthers the idea that the onions want captains under their control

Although I love pikmin I’ve gotta say that when working on pikmin 4 it’s pretty obvious that this series doesn’t care about lore when playing the games, this stuff doesn’t matter to the developers you can feel it in how pikmin 4 is basically a reboot of pikmin resetting it’s story. Maybe the people who do the website see this as a real theory but I don’t believe they are getting their information from anyone involved with actually making the games

You misspoke regarding the composition of the rollers. It is made of basalt with trace amounts of cobalt and nickel. You said it is made of cobalt and nickel.

What's so confusing about the timeline? I see no reason why Olimar's Shipwreck Tale couldn't just be another shipwreck on PNF-404 (he gets into those a lot) that just happens to mirror the original crash in the first game, and takes place after 1-3. It's not like he acts like it's his first time being there, and we see no evidence that he doesn't already have prior experience with Pikmin and the other creatures on the planet. I think fans just kinda jumped to conclusions when his crash in 4 was similar to his crash in the original.

how can pikmin 1 2 and 3 be canon when pikmin 4 basically retconned it all away?
@frug46814 ай бұрын
I think that everything that exists in 1, 2 and 3 do still exist in the new pikmin 4 timelike, just the events of those games don’t happen. By this I mean that the Forest of Hope and Twilight River and enemies such as the Plasm Wraith and Gattling groink very much still exist, it’s just that Olimar didn’t land in the Impact Site. That’s my theory at least
@TamTroll4 ай бұрын
@@frug4681 that makes sense, but i feel like that's less "1 2 and 3 are still canon" and more "it's the same universe, new timeline"

My theory as to what the Pikmin are is essentially just evolution. The Pikmin are produced by the Onion when given nutrients. My guess would be that this is an evolutionary trait developped by the onions to feed itself. The Pikmin are small offshoots of the onion designed to bring it nutrients,bto create more offshoots and probably another Onion at some point. If the Onions can fuse and grow when provided with large sources of nutrition like the Flarlic, it stands to reason that it can split up into two onions when provided with enough nutrients. The Pikmin also serve as a guarding force against various predators. The different Pikmin types are evolutionary adaptions to different environments. Blue pikmin can survive in water becauese the blue onions live in water filled areas. They probably get sustained by a mix of drawing some nutrients from the things they hunt, as well as photosynthesis using the leaf on their head. My guess, since they are so smaller is that their metabolism is fairly slow to a point where, if they do nothing but chill in the sun, they can sustain themselves. As to why the whistle works on Pikmin/onions, my guess would be that the Onion uses some form of sonic frequency to recall the Pikmin when it gets late, direct them, etc, like the player does only less hands on for obvious reasons. The whistle is probably a side effect. An unanticipated frequency that can override the Onions commands. A biological error, if you will. Lastly, I believe the Onions keeps following the player around because they believe their ships to be a fellow onion, maybe due to the heat output and/or sonic frequencies by the engine, They try to merge with it but are obviously unable to, so they just follow it around trying to merge. The flying into orbit at night is a defense mechanism to hide from the night predators but I believe that's outright stated in Pikmin 3. Lastly, I believe all Onions have a fairly close common ancestor. The Lumiknoll has probably split off earlier in the evolutionary tree than the Onions, causing the huge differences while retaining the abliity to produce Pikmin. The Glow Pikmin are substantially stronger than normal Pikmin due to the fact that they have to deal with the more dangerous night predators. They purely serve as a deterrent since the Lumiknoll is deeply rooted into the ground, drawing it's nutrients form there like a normal plant.

Just for some clarification, does the website imply that Pikmin 4 DOES take place in the same timeline as the others? if so, is it a prequel or does it take place where the number suggests?

Something I need to state to people who are saying "But the in-universe character only brings it up as a THEORY!" A writer does this as a way for the READER/VIEWER to KNOW what is going on while leaving the in-universe characters still speculating. See you, as a reader/viewer, can afford to take a 100% direct answer as a yes or no. Your day goes on regardless of the answer. The characters in-universe CAN'T as they have the risk of being wrong potentially costing them their lives.

What if it ends up being the planets atmosphere itself thats either a giant wraith or housing it letting it have some sort of control over of the meteors like waves, because none of the characters can breath oxygen so to me that kinda makes it parallel a bit towards how the umibozu would try to drown the people on the ships it sinks in the ocean, since they cant breath on the planet itself without their suits it might as well be a giant ocean to them in some ways. Even though thats not at all likely a air based wraith would be kinda cool to fight

Also, Olimar's Dreams Of Humans Living With Pikmin Being Pikmin Bloom Might Be Canon To The Story telling us how Humans Used To Live On PNF-404 And The Treasures they left behind. I think its likely that the theory was adopted by the developers after seeing the popularity of it. I personaly found the theory to be cool, but way too far fetched to actually having been the hidden story of pikmin all along, so i find it doubtfull that this was what the devs had in mind, back when the first games were being made, all those years ago. They were simple games, with a silly story, its way too far fetched to assume this elaborate secret lore was what the developers were planning to tell the masses 20 ish years into the future. It makes sense too, Pikmin 4 introduced and brought back a lot of stuff fans were hoping for, its very likely they adopted the theory due to the fanfare. Cool to see it being canon though.

I do seriously think it's a Scott Cawthon deal. There had been literal decades gaps between the releases of 2 and 3 and then from 3 to 4 So with so many different developers and ideas and loredrops and seemingly conflicting information... the best thing *to* do would be a sort of soft reset-not-reset of the series, right? And along with, explain the single most confusing aspect of the previous games with a commonly agreed-upon fan theory
