I love early PIL and John McGeoch even more, but by ‘88 Lydon had become pretty annoying to the point where I never explored JM’s work with PIL. The Magazine and Siouxsie stuff is sacred to me. I didn’t hate this, but playing Sex Pistols through a Roland Jazz Chorus probably shouldn’t be a thing

Yeah, that chorusing ruins it. I saw them play in Seattle at The Moore Theater promoting the album "Happy" - right around this time. There wasn't any Jazz Chorus on the backline, and it was a great show. Ironically, they did NOT play "Seattle"! Johnny always knew how to fuck with the audience...

😂 I agree on the Chorus issue but I’m just happy to hear “Holidays In The Sun”. I first heard JM on PiL’s album “9” from 1988 and he floored me not just with his musicianship and instrument skills, but the way he could either dominate and subtly colour the soundscape with equal ease. The sound was so synthetic by then, an observation not a criticism, and I loved listening to him, which sent me backwards to Magazine. I get how Lydon puts you off investigating his PiL work, but I can say at least on that album, it is worthy of his mighty legacy.

You have to understand the context. These people were there to celebrate freedom and they wanted independence from the Soviet Union. To play a song critical of Soviet communism in the Soviet Union with Soviet tanks pointing towards the stage to 300 thousand people screaming for human rights...it's ok.The cocktail jazz era pil did play some Pistols in 1983 as well.This 88 lineup was incredible live,sadly the albums written with Lu Edmonds only got to see him and Mcgeoch once on 1887's Happy.Tenitus prevented Edmonds to play on 9,but he wrote for it.I love the current PIL but Mcgeoch passed away 5 years before they reunited.

A lot of shit dished out on here. But their performance overall was fantastic; this song is a wry nod at the situation. I read they’d arrived last minute to perform in Estonia whilst Russian presence was there. If you watch the whole set you will agree. It’s better than Queen at Live Aid

I know PiL and Pistols are unrelated vehicles, but I'd noticed PiL were playing a sort of ham showbiz pastiche of not only the Pistols back catalogue but also early PiL by this point. It never sat well with me and believe me I was barely out of school, hardly discerning in my musical tastes.

it is an interesting phenomenon that no band ever seems to be able to play a song with the same rawness as when it was first a hit...I mean, why? It's just instruments and singing, if it's the same people youd think they could recapture the initial sound but they never can.
