First time I saw these was in South East Asia in 70' . Its scary awesome what they can do and where they can do it....Air America had a few but the ones I saw were Flat Black no markings....none!

The plane was designed originally with a piston engine, so when they changed the design to turboprop the lighter weight of this engine type necessitated putting it further forward of the center of gravity.

@qotsaandsoadfan1 : because a turbine is lighter than a pistion engine you need to put it further in front to maintain correct center of gravity. Pilatus was first designed as a piston engine aircraft if my memory is correct.

The yardstick here is:"How many sheets of 4X8feet of plywood can I load in there or how many 50gallon(200liters)drums of oil fit in?" with the Otter is a ton and a half as it all does fit in...the Noorduyn Norseman take a bit less but need much more room for take off. The Pilatus is actually more rugged by the appearances but I have landed in 80 degree slopes with a piston Otter with DC-3 tires in the arctic where it is smooth

Sorry I´not a plane guy but it almost sounds like they change the rotation direction just after they land, is that right ?? Thanks
@adriancamilleri29178 жыл бұрын
It seems like they have a variable pitch propeller, and they keep the prop spinning in the same direction and change the pitch until the leading edge of the blades point backwards. I'm the not entirely sure of this but it's more convenient than changing the direction of rotation.
@pauleyplay6 жыл бұрын
You got it right, Beta is flat pitch, Reverse is blades to the rear. After touchdown. You cant change the rotation of the engine !

I looked over a Pilatus Porter in Cali, Colombia...was pretty beaten up, was told it belonged to dopers. It is pretty much all it can do, the cabin has less room than a beaver(same engine size)...not practical at all, just like the Antonov ANT-2 No wonder nobody bothered to put it on floats(there's a million lakes in Canada...) As for the ANT-2, flying the Peruvian and Equadorian jungle strips, there's 1000s of them abandoned there, cheap($5000) but useless!

@hotspur66611 жыл бұрын
Had they built the cabin two feet wider and moved the cockpit forward two feet like Dehav did with the Turbo-Beaver, this would have been a big success...as it is, it sell for just the price of the engine and beer can metal while the Turbo Beaver and Turbo Otter still go for a million and a half! You'd think the makers of the Pilatus PC-12 would have more marketing savvy!

You see them parked, period...no use for them...cannot load sheets of plywood, lumber or fuel drums as cabin is just too small. Caravans, and De Havs earn their keep commercially here, even PC-12 while the PC-7 is the sort of thing for the bureaucrats enjoyment(government contracts doing really nothing!)
@hotspur6668 жыл бұрын
Why the two main doors unlatched at first? Thanks, I'll stick with the Turbo-Otter...twice the room & load, better stol, same engines...Can you load a snow sled Skandic SWT? NO! Can you load fifty sheets of plywood? NO, can you load six drums of oil? NO! Can you load inside thirty four by four inches by sixteen feet sticks? NO! Can you fly with a sixteen foot fishing boat? NO! Can you carry outside 24 two by twelve inches by sixteen feet planks? NO! Frankly, it's more in the Turbo Beaver's class...nowhere near the Otter!
@Account40968 жыл бұрын
+hotspur666 Can you land the Turbo Otter in a 500ft loose gravel mountain strip at 7000' MSL and still maneuver it out of there by dodging trees and mountains? No. I actually love all three types - the 2, the 3 as well as the PC-6. This specific carrier, however, chose the Porter because it best suits the operation needs in Papua, Indonesia (see "Worst Place to be a Pilot"). The Beavers and Otters will definitely work well in Vancouver, but in Papua, the Porter trumps everything else.
@hotspur6668 жыл бұрын
+PK-JIN ...It's all relative..they all only need a few hundred feet if fairly light...I never flew the Porter but the Otter will carry obscene loads(twice the legal, you figure it out) out of a big lake or a long river on skis...I also flew the piston Otter on big wheels on the side of mountains in the arctic with a 70 degrees+ slope, turning around on ledges...for take off, you just released the brakes, no need to use the starter, just turn the ignition on and the mixture as the engine start windmilling on your near vertical run/dive...I'm too old for that shit now...I only saw an old Porter in Cali, Colombia...It was beaten up to rat shit...When I asked who it belonged to, the guys started sneezing and laffing...
