So very familiar. We worked at Tiom in West Papua 1973-75 and MAF serviced our area. Our daughter was born at Mulia. She is 48 now. My wife is now passed. A trek that took me 2 days, we could cover in a 10 minute flight. So many memories. The Danis were wonderful people.

As a 65 y/o old pilot that has spent most of his life flying Boeings I too am blown away by it all. 40 years ago I may have been up to this sort of work but not these days. I often wish my career had followed a different path, especially when the alarm goes off at 3am to start of another 4 or 5 day trip.

I do console myself about my life choices by the fact that had I not taken the path I did, I would not have had the beloved offspring and wife I am fortunate to have. I write this at 4am getting ready to go to work once again. Boo hoo.😭

Becoming a pilot in Papua is very difficult due to uncertain natural conditions. If there is a pilot who can fly in Papua then he can fly anywhere in the world. The Pilatus Porter was the first ever plane I flew on back in 1967 when I was just 7yrs old. Dad worked on the Snowy Mountains Scheme in Australia, and the Pilatus was a major transportation method for the smaller remote Townships of "The Snowy" . Still one of my very favorite planes of all time. I have a model on my desk at work. Your videos are great. Thanks for the memories ....haha

I am 56 and growing up you only ever saw such wonderful things as you have shown once ever year, if lucky, in a documentary with 16mm format. Technology has its upsides as well as down. I hope the spirit of past aviators look after your plucky plane and its engine; I spotted a few trees out there ! :) Finally, the kids loving your drone zipping about made me smile. In 30 years of flying, I have had two engine outs. Both times I had the altitude to reach a runaway but even if I had not made a runway though there were still decent options (fields/clearings/roads) available. Still, I am always looking for a spot to land in an emergency. In all of that incredibly beautiful scenery, I did not see any place to survive an engine out other than the two runways! You gotta love having that turbine huh? :) (EDIT: On a second watch I did notice a riverbed off the end of Pending that could be survivable!)

Rob Johnson Papua is notorious as a difficult place to fly. As you point out few emergency landing sites but also the mountains, winds and clouds and quickly changeable weather. Some young pilots from Australia and New Zealand head there to get their hours up. It’s not for the faint hearted.
