A day in the life of a Pileated Woodpecker in eastern Massachusetts . This female has spent her nights in this cavity for most of the winter. She departs each day morning within a few minutes of sunrise and spends the day foraging for food. The male often joins her in her foraging, but spends his nights in a diferent cavity several hundred yards away. They return to their respective cavities at sunset. The male made one visit to the female's cavity, but was driven away when he tried to enter.
