It's probably not the best way to do it.

You may be able to point me in the right direction for a 4 digit 7-segment red display countdown timer that uses the 0.8-1" tall readout. Any ideas short of just making my own?

Just off the top of my head, i don't remember seeing a kit like that. Though, it does seem like something that should exist. maybe someone else in the comments knows of one?

@@pileofstuff that's what I've been saying! It sounds too common for it to not be a thing, but I'll be darned if I can find it! I've looked pretty hard also to no avail. My next move was going to be to hack an old digital alarm clock and try to use its display and an Arduino.

​@@PropGuru702for use with Arduino, try old set top boxes. Their digital displays often use a common TMxxxx series display driver for which drivers exist for the Arduino environment. :)

It should really have a series resistor with the pot to stop the output of the 4069 being shorted, if it is turned to min resistance. I should have watched it to the end before commenting. 😊

Yeah, that would be a good addition/revision. But it only takes a small tweak on the pot to avoid the problem.

Try to kill the CD4069 that way. You will not be successful ;-) It's output impedance is too high which limits the output current before it blows.

Great circuit. Would it benefit from an optocoupler or is the relay isolating enough? Asking for a friend. 😬

The relay is literally an "air gap" between the control circuit and the load. Unless you try to exceed the load side specs, it should be perfectly safe.

Hearing Winnipeg mentioned at the beginning of the video was unexpected. I'm not much of a beer drinker, and the only local "small" brewery I'm familiar with is TCB cuz my wife works for Princess Auto.

So you're saying you have access to a staff discount at Princess Auto? Lucky guy! There's actually a bunch of microbreweries popped up around the city in the last 4-5 years. A couple in the Exchange area, a couple on Pembia just south of Confusion Corner, and several over in St James / Airport area. Barn Hammer, who made this one, is on Wall Street just north of Portage.

As to LEDs long lead/flat spot markings - after getting some batches from AliExpress that didn't follow the conventions (factory rejects ending up on Ali.?.. I'm shocked!😁)I always test LEDs before putting them in a project.

You are right, that's exactly what happens. We had a few times super cheap LEDs with messed up polarity. Most likely junk that someone figured is worth to be monetized.

Could you add a resistor in series with the pot to increase the time. This would be really usefull as a fan or night light controller in a bathroom if it could be set to say 10 minutes.

Absolutely, that or changing the capacitor value wold change the time range.

I still have happy memories of Tandy electronics, it was the first electric shop in the town I lived in. It was full of stuff I'd never seen before, and being able to get my hands on the Maplin electronics catalogue, yes very happy memories indeed.

11:54... Pin #6 of the IC Socket needs a solder touch up... IMO

The thru-hole plating is full of solder and firmly attached to the pin. On a singel sided board, that would be more of a worry.

Probably, but the ESP32 can do timing and touch sensing on it's own as well.
