Remember that light from the last mailbag that arrived broken?
Time to see if I can fix it.
And do a bit of an exploration of what's inside.

This isn't the only way to do it.
It's probably not the best way to do it.
But it's how I did it.

In order to replace rhe wite that is clamped to the screw, i myself just drill a little hole in the side, pass the tip of the wire and solder it as flat as I can. And I also use to replace the sensing resistor wirh one of the double of the value to reduce the cutest and make the lamp last much more.

I use some similar lights (with an added light in the middle of the "leaves") in my garage. I've been very impressed - they are much better than a bare bulb.

Good job. I believe the packaging displaying 60w is an equivalent in terms of brightness to a 60w incandescent bulb. And ofcourse 16w is its actual current draw.

That makes more sense. I'm so used to "optimistic" claims on these cheap things that I don't always think of other more honest possibilities.

A 14W Phillips LED bulb is equivalent to 84W, ie, efficiency is sus - lol -.

Nice repair! Another way to repair the wire, especially if it is broken off at the Edison shell is to drill a small hole in the "skirt", poke a stripped wire in from the inside and solder it. Regards, David

I'm surprised the light didn't get up and crawl off the bench when you used a proper silicone wire to make the repair. 😎 Thanks for the video, I knew you'd fix it when it didn't work from the unboxing. 👍

You had the opportunity to add a fuse, but like the manufacturer elected not to! LOL!

The wires are substandard enough to act as a fuse.

I bought a similar light that had the same problem. Seller gave me a full refund and I was able to fix it. Still works fine today 5 years later.

Well done with the repair. I just hope that they last longer than the pair I got which failed with burnt out leds after 3 and 6months respectively. Keep up the great work 😀👍

If that happens, I'll have to open it up again and see if it's fixable again.

I think the 60Watts on the box indicates that it is equivalent to a 60 watt globe. A 60Watt LED would be ridiculously bright and hot.

That makes more sense. I get s used to these things lying, I sometimes don't consider more benign options.
@ekenpad8482

Possibly they're meaning 60W "equivalent". (Or outright lying, sure :) ) The first LED's were about 13-15W for 800 lumen = 60W incandescent. Now they're about 8W for 800 lumen.

I've noticed a few mentions online of "60W equivalent" compared to the light output of an incandescent bulb of the same wattage. The thought being is that it's the same brightness as an old "60W bulb". That or they're just straight up lying, hard to tell.

I think the manufacturers are just getting lazy and cheap with the printing process because they’re relying on buyers knowing the equivalence concept. A luxmeter would be required to be sure it’s really putting out the equivalent but they’re kind of uncommon and I don’t see Our Hero buying one just to test lamps like this. Of course if that company that keeps sending him test equipment wants to donate one to the channel I for one would eagerly sit through a review/demo video… That consumer understanding is slowly evaporating by the way. Fewer and fewer people who aren’t tech geeks like us even remember what tungsten lamps were much less how much light you got per watt from them. Sooner or later, probably sooner, the equivalence markings will have to go away.

It doesn't really matter either way - that's actually 60Wc where Wc = watts China - they clearly use their own measurement units, because it never matches up with the watts that the rest of the world uses! It's very odd, almost none of their measurement units line up with the rest of the world. They must use Metric+ there in the big rock candy mountain land

Completely off topic, but does anyone else think the stick figure on that beer can looks a lot like a refugee from an XKCD comic? I mean, he does look a lot like Black Hat Guy… Yes, that lamp’s driver board looks just like many that Big Clive has shown us, right down to the unpopulated component spaces. At least the missing components aren’t likely to promote “burst into flames” failure modes.

I really like way you will tear into anything to see what's inside. This one was an easy fix. I have been looking for single panel of led lights like what is in one blade. Got any ideas of where or search terms? Thanks
@pileofstuff
@pileofstuff 8 ай бұрын
I'd probably start with something like "LED panel" and maybe add voltage or warm white or things like that to refine the search.

The DOAs I've had (from AliExoress) of the smaller 28W version have both been related to the connections to the E27 base, one to the center tip (trivial fix) and one to the screw part. Drilled a small hole in the plastic just above the screw, and with tweezers fed the wire through and soldered to the top of the screw bit externally.
