I actually have to disagree with that, some of the best stories in history have been written specifically to explore ideas and even politics first, the basis of telling stories is often in messaging. The problem is that the anti-woke crowd are inherently uninterested with higher ideas, don't want to be challenged to think hard about anything, and are openly uncurious about the world. It's not the message, it's the idiots writing it.

@ginidontthinkso4282 OK so the book I read was "Redemption" which was the start of his Ryan Drake series. I will try to remember as much of the plot as I humanly can but I will warn you most of my recollection of the book was complaining about how cliche it was and predclicting everything that came next so well I genuinely started to convince myself I was prophetic. So our book follows the authors James Bind x Jack Reacher love child Ryan Drake. An ex British army man who joins the CIA, because of crouse he does, as a (and I'm not making this up) Shepherd. He and his team find people. Especially those who don't want to be found! Because you know that's what shepherds do. They find lost sheep that don't want to be found. Now him amd his team get sent on a mission. Go get this woman have her back on is soil within 48 hours "but this turns out to be more dangerous than anything Ryan and his team have faced before" I'm sure this was an actual blurb on the book. So him and his team set off to go save the woman who's name starts with either an M or am N if I remember correctly. Cliche stuff happens along the way and they have to fight to get the girl then they get her. And it turns out she's also a government agent but not for the USA if u remember right. Then they naturally start to develop feelings for each other and along the way he learns that the us government was lying to him or some shit which males him run away with the girl instead and it seemed like the rest of the series was going to be focused on both governments tracking them down. It wasn't a bad book in terms of writing or spelling or anything like that it was just too cliche and pulpy for me to ever take it seriously. Its the sort of book I'd expect to find my grandfather reading in between watching black and white westerns.

all conservative critics run into this problem: they think creating art is as easy as disingenuously tearing it down, so they launch a movie/music project that starts with a bang but always ends with a self-pitying whimper as it gets torn to shreds.

Honestly I don't think it's anything more complicated than an Uwe Boll type situation from people who are just far more cynical. Conservatives will consume conservative media as a point of honour, but it isn't even about the viewership unless like you get these flukes like God's Not Dead. The investors who fund people like Ben Shapiro aren't in the habit of losing money. tax incentives, loopholes and unnamed accounts are probably the more involved than any reptilian ideological beliefs they hold

I think a lot of his analysis is actually pretty good. I don't agree with his politics, but anyone trying to insert politics into a story tends to ruin the story. Either you already agree, in which case it's a bit dull, or you don't, and it's infuriating. A lot of fiction is produced with the mindset of "when they see this they'll know I'm right!", and that invariably detracts from the enjoyment of the work for the 99.9% of people who don't reevaluate their world view. The only exceptions I can think of didn't try to directly make me think a certain way, just view the subject differently (starship troopers the book is famous for this. Nobody agrees with it but it's very informative as to why you disagree). It's amusing he wasn't able to pass the same critical lense over his own script, but I've dabbled enough with writing to know that one's own work is a massive blindspot.

Conservatives can't do art or culture because art/culture is based on a kind of Hegelianism; questions and answers and the interogation of those answers into new questions endlessly. Art is a process, it must be open, pull from different things, be curious, be introspective, empathic etc. Conservatives merely want to restate or repackage spite and hierarchies. They lack any interest in or ability to, reflect or share; they seek only to declare, to demand, to fix in place what by its nature is always moving. Everything they do is derivative or hacky because original thought or sincerity is a little too close to humanity for them, which is the thing they always seek to avoid because at their core, conservatives fear or are disgusted by, humanity.

One problem with rightwing culture warriors is that they think they’re the main character and that all entertainment should be made for them. The idea that different people have different taste offends them. A movie is good if they like it and bad if they dislike it. So it’s no surprise that their books/movies are really personal and bad since it’s only meant for them and they don’t even know how to write for other people. And they typically first decide beforehand if a movie is good or bad based on subjective criteria and then look for justification. If they dislike a movie, they will spend all their time looking for things to complain about even if they’re wrong because they were so focused on mistakes that they couldn’t follow the story. If they like a movie, they turn off their brains before it starts and attack anyone who criticizes it.

There's nothing in this film that counters any of the actual filmmaking issues he complains about. It takes a swim in them, tbh. I suppose his rule that a movie can't have anywhere near as many women as men in it is upheld. Didn't seem to change the quality much, to no one's surprise.

Go and look up the correlation between "brain structure" and "political orientation". Its a very interesting rabbit hole. People that lean conservative tend to look for an authoritarian "daddy" to tell them how to think and act, have less room for empathy, have a greater reaction to fear, and have greater difficulty with critical thinking, to just name a few. When you look at what different studies of brainscans have found, A LOT of stuff suddenly makes a lot of sense.

Critics transitioning into creation regularly run head first into the issue that the ability to discuss art and create it are often very distinct skills. Drinker can be a decent critic and identify the reason why certain scenes or movies flop, when he is sincere. But he has pivoted to pandering to a crowd that wants to be told that Hollywood is run by a woke-cabal that is ruining movies by pushing "tHE mEssAge!" and he pivoted so hard that it is undermining his critical skills, and this combined with the issues good-faith critics face means that he was pretty much set up for failure from the onset.

Funny how he dedicates his life to criticize Hollywood for making "forgettable, woke/preaching first, no story crap", and yet when he gets the chance to show the world his critiques are not shallow, that he knows what he's talking about, that he can teach the big, "political fueled, agenda pushing bigots of Hollywood" how to do art, he can't seem to even live up to his own standard, as you say, I'm pretty sure you could take voice clips from his own channel, organize them on top of clips of his movie and you'd get a full "critique" suggesting the movie is just another "woke slop" piece of shit.
